Assessing politeness of requestive speech acts produced by Japanese learners of English in a spoken corpus

This study aims to investigate whether it is possible to assess learners’ sociopragmatic competence in learner spoken data by examining requests produced by Japanese learners of English. Various pragmalinguistic features of requests in shopping role plays in the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology Japanese Learner English (NICT JLE) Corpus were extracted and the appropriateness of these linguistic features was rated by twenty English language instructors (10 native speakers and 10 Japanese) in terms of their politeness in different shopping situations. A significantly high rate of agreement was only obtained in judging the requests negotiating for a refund or exchange of the purchased item. The Japanese informants showed a relatively lower agreement than the natives especially on requests asking for permission to test an item. The highly rated linguistic features were not frequently used in the corpus. Therefore, annotating the sociopragmatic information in the target corpus seems unrealistic

Under NRS 612.530(1), parties have 11 days after the NESD Board of Review\u27s decision is finalized to request judicial review. NRCP 6(d) provides a three-day extension for parties to act after they are served by mail. While the Court once interpreted NRCP 6(d) to extend NRS 612.530(1)’s deadline2, the Court found that the statute’s clear language does not allow for an extension because it focuses on the date the decision is finalized, not the decision’s service date. The Supreme Court of Nevada thus held that NRCP 6(d)\u27s three-day mailing rule does not influence the timeframe set by NRS 612.530(1)

Sustainable Hydrogen from Bio-Oil - Catalytic Steam Reforming of Acetic Acid as a Model Oxygenate

Studies were conducted with acetic acid (HAc) as model oxygenate for the design of active and stable catalysts for steam reforming of bio-oil. Pt/ZrO2 catalysts were prepared by wet impregnation technique. The Pt/ZrO2 catalysts showed high activities at initial time on stream, but lost its activity for steam reforming (H2 production) rapidly. During HAc/H2O reaction over Pt/ZrO2, conversion was close to 100% and constant for 3 hr, however, yields of products changed with time. In the beginning (5 min), H2 and CO2 were the main products, CH4 and CO were observed in small quantities. During HAc/H2O reaction over ZrO2 (without Pt), HAc conversion was close to 90%. The conversion of HAc and yields of the products were constant for 3 hr. However, no steam reforming activity (H2 and CO) was observed, and only acetone and CO2 were observed as products. Both Pt/ZrO2 and ZrO2 were very active for HAc conversion. However, H2 and CO, i.e., steam reforming products, were produced only over Pt/ZrO2 and not over ZrO2. ZrO2 showed acetone yields similar to those observed over Pt/ZrO2 after 25 min time on stream. The presence of acetone in the product mixture and formation of deposits on ZrO2 indicated a role for acetone in catalyst deactivation

Socially responsible behaviour: Who supports societal crowdfunding among Chinese and Japanese university students?

    Get PDF
Crowdfunding is one of social finance measures and has been become a global phenomenon of growing socio-economic importance. To identify who supports social-good fields of crowdfunding, this study determined: (a) consumer consciousness and actual crowdfunding usage, (b) awareness and the image of crowdfunding, and (c) factors supporting crowdfunding, by sampling younger university students as potential major users to understand their tendencies. The results showed that the top three fields of crowdfunding that both groups would like to support were child education, disaster recovery and medical welfare, recognized as societal fields. Furthermore, the results of personality and intentionality traits showed that individuals with openness, instead of agreeableness, were inclined toward many fields of crowdfunding. Social-oriented individuals would support medical welfare and environmental protection, those with conscientiousness would support child education, and those with neuroticism would support natural disaster recovery. In contrast, individual-oriented persons with neuroticism would support human rights, and those with neuroticism and openness would support minority rights. This study is the first to clarify the consumer character willing to engage in socially responsible behaviour on current global issues.Bulletin論文Articledepartmental bulletin pape
