    Geometric Metastability, Quivers and Holography

    We use large N duality to study brane/anti-brane configurations on a class of Calabi-Yau manifolds. With only branes present, the Calabi-Yau manifolds in question give rise to N=2 ADE quiver theories deformed by superpotential terms. We show that the large N duality conjecture of hep-th/0610249 reproduces correctly the known qualitative features of the brane/anti-brane physics. In the supersymmetric case, the gauge theories have Seiberg dualities which are represented as flops in the geometry. Moreover, the holographic dual geometry encodes the whole RG flow of the gauge theory. In the non-supersymmetric case, the large N duality predicts that the brane/anti-brane theories also enjoy such dualities, and allows one to pick out the good description at a given energy scale.Comment: v2: 56 pages, 4 figures, harvmac, abstract correcte

    Dynamics of synchronized neural activity in prefrontal-hippocampal networks during behavioral sensitization

    poster abstractNeural synchrony exhibits temporal variability, therefore the temporal patterns of synchronization and desynchronization may have functional relevance. This study employs novel time-series analysis to explore how neural signals become transiently phase locked and unlocked during repeated injections of the psychostimulant, D-Amphetamine (AMPH). Short (but frequent) desynchronized events dominate synchronized dynamics in each of the animals we examined. After the first AMPH injection, only increases in the relative prevalence of short desynchronization episodes (but not in average synchrony strength) were significant. Throughout sensitization both strength and the fine temporal structure of synchrony (measured as relative prevalence of short desynchronizations) were similarly altered with AMPH injections, with each measure decreasing in the pre-injection epoch and increasing after injection. Decoupling between locomotor activity and synchrony was observed in AMPH, but not saline, animals. The increase in numerous short desynchronizations (as opposed to infrequent, but long desynchronizations) in AMPH treated animals may indicate that synchrony is easy to form yet easy to break. These data yield novel insight into how synchrony is dynamically altered in cortical networks by AMPH and identify neurophysiological changes that may be important to understand the behavioral pathologies of addiction

    Analysis of the Fully Developed Chute Flow of Granular Materials

    Existing constitutive relations and governing equations have been used to solve for fully developed chute flows of granular materials. In particular, the results of Lun et al. (1984) have been employed and the boundary value problem has been formulated with two parameters (the coefficient of restitution between particles, and the chute inclination), and three boundary values at the chute base wall, namely the values of solid fraction, granular temperature, and mean velocity at the wall. The boundary value problem has been numerically solved by the "shooting method." The results show the significant role played by granular conduction in determining the rpofiles of granular temperature, solid fraction, and mean velocity in chute flows. These analytical results are also compared with experimental measurements of velocity fluctuation, solid fraction, and mean velocity made by Ahn et al. (1989), and with the computer simulations by Campbell and Brennen (1985b)

    Harmonic phase-dispersion microscope with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer

    Harmonic phase-dispersion microscopy (PDM) is a new imaging technique in which contrast is provided by differences in refractive index at two harmonically related wavelengths. We report a new configuration of the harmonic phase-dispersion microscope in a Mach-Zehnder geometry as an instrument for imaging biological samples. Several improvements on the earlier design are demonstrated, including a single-pass configuration and acousto-optic modulators for generating the heterodyne signals without mechanical arm scanning.     Selective Effects of D- and L-Govadine in Preclinical Tests of Positive, Negative, and Cognitive Symptoms of Schizophrenia

    There is a critical need to develop novel pharmacotherapeutics capable of addressing the positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia. Building on recent studies with a racemic mixture of the synthetic tetrahydroprotoberberine, D,L-Govadine, we isolated the D- and L-stereoisomers and employed a battery of behavioral, neurochemical, and electrophysiological procedures to assess their individual therapeutic potential. Rodent models predictive of antipsychotic efficacy and those that model positive symptoms were employed and we found that L-Govadine, but not D-Govadine, improved these measures. Pretreatment with either stereoisomer during CS pre-exposure prevented the disruption of latent inhibition by amphetamine. Moreover, pretreatment with either stereoisomer also improved deficits in social interaction in the neonatal ventral hippocampal lesioned rat. Improved cognitive performance in two different prefrontal cortex-dependent tasks was observed with D-, but not L-Govadine, which strongly suggests that the D-steroisomer may be an effective cognitive enhancer. Alterations in dopamine efflux were also assessed and L-Govadine increased dopamine efflux in both the prefrontal cortex and nucleus accumbens. However, D-Govadine only increased dopamine efflux in the prefrontal cortex and not in the nucleus accumbens. Electrophysiological studies confirmed that L-Govadine is a DA-D2 antagonist, whereas D-Govadine shows no appreciable physiological effects at this receptor. Collectively these data show that L-Govadine performs well on measures predictive of antipsychotic efficacy and rodent models of positive symptoms through antagonism of DA-D2 receptors, whereas D-Govadine improves impairments in compromised memory function in delayed response tasks possibly through selective increases in DA efflux in the frontal cortex
