Background: In the present study, the protective and therapeutic effects of quercetin (QE) on renal injury induced by methotrexate (MTX) have been examined. Materials and methods: A total of 24 male rats were divided into the following three groups: control group, MTX group, and MTX+QE group. Rats in MTX group received 20mg/kg of single dose of MTX, while those in MTX+QE group received 20mg/kg of single dose MTX, in addition to 15mg/kg of QE administered 30min prior to MTX and in the following 5-day period as a single daily dose. At the end of the experimental period, renal tissues were removed for histopathological and biochemical assessments. Results: Light microscopic examination showed a disruption of the renal structure in rats in MTX group in the form of tubular degeneration and dilation, with shedding of the tubular epithelial cells into the lumen. QE treatment was associated with less marked degenerative changes, with a similar histological appearance to that of controls. Furthermore, QE treatment resulted in decreased the number of apoptotic cells. Biochemical assessments showed significantly higher malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in MTX group as compared to control and MTX+QE groups. superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and catalase (CAT) levels showed a significant decrease in MTX group as compared to controls. However, QE significantly suppressed MDA level, compensated deficits in the anti-oxidant defenses [reduced SOD, GSH-Px, and CAT levels] in kidney tissue resulted from MTX administration. Conclusions: In conclusion, renal toxic effects of MTX may be alleviated by QE

Problematic mobile phone use is an important problem which has increasing prevalence among adolescents. We should address risk factors to create intervention frameworks related to this problem. In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of problematic smartphone use among adolescents who were referred to clinics, its relationship to sociodemographic characteristics, psychiatric symptoms and emotion regulation problems. We included 150 adolescents aged 12–18 years who own smartphones. All participants filled out the Sociodemographic Information Form, Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) and Problematic Mobile Phone Use Scale (PMPUS). Problematic smart phone use was detected in 50.6% of the sample. Adolescents with problematic use were found to be older than the others, with lower levels of maternal education and self-achievement. Regression analysis revealed that the factors predicting the risk of problematic smartphone use are somatization, interpersonal sensitivity and hostility symptoms. According to our results, we suggest psychiatrists consider the high prevalence of problematic smartphone use, address the relationship between hostility, somatic symptoms and interpersonal sensitivity (susceptibility) and the effects of this current problem on social-academic functioning while evaluating and treating adolescents

Objective: WhatsApp (WA) is the most popular instant message application all over the world. Although communication has become easier and enjoyable with the help of this application, the overuse, and addiction of WA has become an important problem among adolescents. WhatsApp addiction is a part of problematic smartphone use (PSU). When we examined previous studies, we found that the samples were generally composed of young adults, but studies on adolescents who are at high risk for problematic Whatsapp use (PWU) were insufficient, and almost no studies were conducted in the clinical adolescent sample. In this study, we aimed to increase our knowledge about problematic PWU and possible risk factors including fear of missing out (FoMO), PSU, and psychiatric symptoms among adolescents who applied to outpatient psychiatry clinics. Methods: 197 adolescents (136 boys, 61 girls, age: 12-18 years) recruited the study. Problematic Mobile Phone Usage Scale (PMPUS), Bergen Whatsapp Addiction Scale, Brief Symptom Inventory, and Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) Scale were used. Results: We grouped the sample as PWU (Problematic WhatsApp use) and Normal Use group due to Bergen WA Addiction Scale. PWU group’s adolescents were significantly older than others (p=0.03), and had higher scores in all subscales of Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), FoMO and PMPUS (for all scale scores p<0.001). Regression analysis demonstrated that FoMO is a predictor of PWU. Also, paranoid ideation, psychoticism, phobic anxiety, and somatization had a positive effect (ß=1.80, 0.98, 1.26, 0.52; respectively) while obsession compulsion and depression had a negative effect on PWU (ß=-0.76, – 1.22, respectively). Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that problematic Whatsapp use is an important internet-related behavioral problem and have specific risk factors among adolescents. Adolescents use Whatsapp generally with their real friends/relatives. Adolescents who have depression, obsession-compulsion mostly have social withdrawal, and would not be interested in communicating their real social environment. On the other hand, adolescents who have phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, psychoticism and somatization symptoms would follow the changes and events more closely. The associations between different psychiatric symptoms and PWU could guide the practitioners in the psychiatric care of adolescents

Relationship among MIF, MCP-1, viral loads, and HBs Ag levels in chronic hepatitis B patients

    Get PDF
Background/aim: To determine whether macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) levels in patients with hepatitis B (HB) are different than in normal individuals and whether the HB surface antigen (HBs Ag) level and viral load are correlated with each other and with the two aforementioned parameters. Materials and methods: Sera were obtained from 52 chronic active HB (CAHB) patients and 33 healthy controls, and their MIF and MCP-1 levels were measured. Statistical analyses were performed. A value of P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The MIF and MCP-1 values of the control group were increased compared to those of the CAHB group. The MIF and MCP-1 levels were negatively correlated with HBs Ag levels and viral loads. The MIF and MCP-1 levels were positively correlated. The HBs Ag levels and the log10 of the viral loads were positively correlated. Conclusion: We conclude that the negative correlation of MIF and MCP-1 with viral load and HBs Ag levels may be due to T-cell deficiency, antinuclear antibody seropositivity, and/or inhibition of chemokine ligand 2 receptors by viral antigens. More studies with a greater number of subjects are needed to evaluate the potential role of MIF and MCP in CAHB

The effect of myocardial fibrosis on left ventricular torsion and twist in patients with non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy

    Get PDF
Background: Left ventricular (LV) rotation, twist, and torsion are important aspects of thecardiac performance. Myocardial fibrosis can be identified as the late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) in cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). In this study, we investigated the associationbetween myocardial fibrosis and LV rotational parameters in patients with nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (NDC).Methods: Twenty-two NDC patients were enrolled. LV dimensions, volumes and ejection fraction (EF) were measured, conventional tissue Doppler imaging data was acquired. Speckletracking imaging was performed to measure LV deformation, LV rotational parameters. Bloodsamples were obtained for NT-proBNP. Late gadolinium enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance (LGE-CMR) was used to assess cardiac fibrosis index. Results: Myocardial deformation was similar between LGE+ and LGE– groups. LGE+patients have significantly higher basal and lower apical systolic rotation, lower twist andtorsion when compared to LGE– patients. However, untwisting rate was similar between thegroups. Torsion was significantly correlated with LVEF and MR-index. Patients with reversedapical systolic rotation had significantly greater NT-proBNP values, basal systolic rotation andsignificantly lower apical systolic rotation, torsion, and MR-index.Conclusions: Cardiac fibrosis index is closely related with myocardial torsion and LV systolicfunction and may be used for the evaluation of cardiac condition. Reversed apical systolicrotation indicated more extensive cardiac fibrosis as it may reflect severe LV dyssynchrony andpoor LV performance

Investigation of serum macrophage migration inhibitor factor and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 levels in irritable bowel syndrome

    Get PDF
Aim: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a functional disorder of the bowel, has been thought to result from immune activation. The aim of this study was to evaluate macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MMIF) and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) levels in IBS patients. Materials and methods: We enrolled 30 IBS patients and 30 healthy controls. The MMIF and MCP-1 levels of all patients and controls were detected using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Results: Serum MMIF and MCP-1 levels were markedly higher in IBS patients than in controls. White blood cell, neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, eosinophil, and basophil counts did not differ significantly between groups. Conclusion: These results show that alterations in MMIF and MCP-1 affect the proinflammatory process. They also suggest that MMIF and MCP-1 may play a substantial role in IBS

Iron Deficiency Anaemia is Associated with Decreased Levels of Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor and Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1

    Get PDF
Many bodily systems are affected by iron deficiency anaemia (IDA), including the immune system. However, the pathophysiological mechanisms whereby this anaemia promotes deterioration in immunity remain largely unexplained. In order to enlighten this pathophysiological link, serum levels of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), which play an important roles in a healthy functioning immune system, were examined in patients with IDA and healthy volunteers. A total of 30 patients with IDA (mean age 33.6+/-7.8 years, 30% male) and 30 healthy individuals (mean age 30.1 +/- 8.8 years, 27 % male) were included. Serum MIF and MCP-1 levels were measured in a sandwich-assay format, using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. There was no statistically significant difference in age and gender distribution between participants with IDA and controls (p> 0.05). Serum MIF and MCP-1 concentrations were lower in the IDA group than in the control group (p < 0.005, and p < 0.01, respectively). When considering the role of MIF and MCP-1 in maintaining the normal immune response of the organism, a decrease in production in patients with IDA may contribute to immune dysfunction in these individuals

Objective: The present study examines the effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic on radical prostatectomy performed as part of localized prostate cancer treatment in Turkey. Material and methods: A retrospective analysis was made of the data of 176 patients from 8 centers in Turkey who underwent radical prostatectomy due to localized prostate cancer over the 2 years spanning March 1, 2019, to February 28, 2021. Within this timeframe, March 1, 2019, to February 28, 2020, was denoted the 1-year pre-coronavirus disease 2019 period, while March 1, 2020, to February 28, 2021, was denoted the 1-year coronavirus disease 2019 period. An analysis was made of whether there was a difference in the number of radical prostatectomies performed for prostate cancer, the time from biopsy to operation, and the biopsy and radical prostatectomy pathology between the 2 periods. Results: It was found that the number of radical prostatectomies performed for localized prostate cancer during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic was statistically and highly significantly fewer than in the pre-coronavirus disease 2019 period (P < .001). The patients diagnosed with Gleason 3 + 3 (low risk) prostate cancer were statistically significantly fewer in number in the coronavirus disease 2019 period (P < .001). The pathological Gleason score was upgrading than the biopsy Gleason score in all patients who underwent in both periods (P < .001). When the periods were compared, the pathological involvement determined by lymph node dissection performed during radical prostatectomy was found to be decreased in the coronavirus disease 2019 period, although the difference was not statistically significant (P = .051). Conclusion: As with many diseases, the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer have been adversely affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. © 2022, AVES. All rights reserved
