A systematic succession planning program, coupled with solid career development is important to public employees. Based on the Social Cognitive Career Theory (1979), Gould’s career planning model, and goal-setting theory, previous studies reveal that there is a relationship between career development and top management support. Thus, to groom future leaders, it is of utmost important for organizations not to rely only on the systematic succession planning programs; but also to have full commitment from the top management. Therefore, this study intends to explore the relationship between leadership characteristic styles and succession planning program implementation in the public sector in Malaysia. Four dimensions of transformational leadership characteristic were used, namely idealized influenced, inspirational motivation, individualized influence and intellectual stimulation. Additionally, two dimensions that measure succession planning which are career development and preparation of future leaders were also used. A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods was advocated in this study. Quantitative research design was employed by distributing survey questionnaires to 576 Malaysian Public Sector government servants from Grade 48 to 54, and (425 questionnaires were returned). Qualitative data was gathered from an elite interview which included seven top organizational leaders from various public agencies. Based on multiple regression analysis, the findings demonstrate that motivational inspiration, individualized influence and intellectual stimulation are significantly related to succession planning program. Thematic analysis which is based on qualitative data is also consistent with the quantitative finding which attests that leadership styles influence the successful implementation of succession planning programs in the public sector. Therefore, public sector needs to pay attention to leadership styles of top management so that succession planning program can be implemented successfully

Exploring Two Types of Aggressive Behavioural Risk Factors among Illegal Motorcycle Street Racers in Malaysia

    Get PDF
Illegal motorcycle street racing is a threat to civil society – it is a symbol of adolescents’ inner rebellion who channelled their unfulfilled desire through aggressive behaviour on the road, causing significant social and economic impact. Aggressive behaviours have been associated with prohibited substances intake, lack of religious knowledge, problematic family structures, and school failure. In this qualitative study, abductive strategies oriented to phenomenological approaches were employed to assess two types of aggressive behaviour risk factors, which were substance abuse and problematic family structures. In-depth interviews were conducted with thirty people in Penang, Malaysia, who participated in illegal street racing, referred to as Mat Rempits. Their responses were analysed using the NVivo software version 12. The results demonstrate three subthemes to prohibited substances intake: to relieve stress, for personal enjoyment, and for racing purposes, whereby the drugs are taken before races for the riders to be more courageous, aggressive, and agile manoeuvring the motorcycles. Meanwhile, the risk factor of family problems includes divorced and conflicted parents, raised by violence, being neglected, and not being appreciated by the family. Most of the participants stated that growing up with violence caused a psychological impact on their soul, making them stubborn, rude, and aggressive. The results demonstrate the need for a specific intervention programme for the adolescent to reduce their involvement in illegal street racing and aggressive behaviour

The development of quality human capital is a process of transforming humans potential; knowledgeable, honorable, skilled and resilient. The failure to develop quality human capital can inhibit a lot of country potential growth. Without quality human capital, the country will turn into declined, even a civilization might be impaired. Success teachers who able to explore and disseminate knowledge, daring to try something new, creative and innovative, and have superior personal qualities, through their teaching and learning (T&L) in developing a critical mentality generation is the critical success factors in shaping a bright future generation. Therefore, through this research, the ‘Integrated Holistic Teaching (IHT) Guide Module’ had been developed to provide awareness and appreciation among Technical and Vocational (TVE) teacher trainees on the importance of IHT approach. This holistic approach focuses on the application and the instillation of the 'Belief and Devotion to God’ (BDG) value in the T&L of TVE subjects, without disturbing the existing syllabus objectives. Three modules expertise had been appointed and agreed to be responsible for checking the modules content, answer the questionnaire of module validity and lastly, give comments on module content which had been developed based on Rusell Model of Module Development 1974. Finally, data analysis was performed using the Tuckmen and Waheed validity formula which showed a high level of 94.67 %. Thus, the BDG values in T&L has been translated well in the form of modules. In other words, the development of IHT guide module meets the Malaysian National Education Philosophy (MNEP) goals, to create a balance and harmonious humans intellectual, spiritual, emotional and physical which based on the BDG values. Get PDF
This study investigated the thermal properties of three room temperature curing adhesives containing nano-particles which were thixotropic and shear thinning which allowed injection into overhead holes when exposed to different environmental conditions. Viscosity and shear stress of the adhesives were measured as a function of shear rate. The thermal behaviour of the adhesives were measured using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis following exposure to different temperatures and humidities which included temperatures of 20°C. 30°C and 50°C, relative humidities of 65% RH, 75% RH and 95% RH, soaked in water at 20°C and placed in the oven at 50°C. The dynamic thermal properties reported include storage and loss modulus, the loss tangent and the glass transition temperature (Tg). For nano- and micro-particles filled adhesives, the Tg increased with the temperature increase, even though the adhesives were subjected to high humidity and this was due to further cross-linking. The results showed that room temperature cured epoxies were only partially cured at room temperature
