    Laser-plasma interactions with a Fourier-Bessel Particle-in-Cell method

    A new spectral particle-in-cell (PIC) method for plasma modeling is presented and discussed. In the proposed scheme, the Fourier-Bessel transform is used to translate the Maxwell equations to the quasi-cylindrical spectral domain. In this domain, the equations are solved analytically in time, and the spatial derivatives are approximated with high accuracy. In contrast to the finite-difference time domain (FDTD) methods that are commonly used in PIC, the developed method does not produce numerical dispersion, and does not involve grid staggering for the electric and magnetic fields. These features are especially valuable in modeling the wakefield acceleration of particles in plasmas. The proposed algorithm is implemented in the code PLARES-PIC, and the test simulations of laser plasma interactions are compared to the ones done with the quasi-cylindrical FDTD PIC code CALDER-CIRC.Comment: submitted to Phys.     From tls point cloud data to geometrical genesis determination of ribbed masonry vaults

    The contribution aims to explore the possibility of tracing the geometry of ribbed vaults from two different Mediterranean regions to a single matrix, verifying the presence of possible local variations of the same rules. In particular, the analyses are being carried out in parallel on some case studies of the regions of Sardinia in Italy and Aragon in Spain. The two case studies include the Iglesia Parroquial del Salvador la Seo in Zaragoza and the Church of Santa Lucia in Cagliari. Both constructions can be traced back to the style known as Late Mediterranean Gothic, which characterised the architecture of the countries bordering the Mediterranean basin between the 14th and 17th centuries. The two case studies chosen were almost at the extreme ends of the Late Gothic period, to determine whether some invariants sought could persist even in relatively distant periods. The analysis focused on cross vaults covering the two naves, which included a laser scanner survey in order to obtain a cloud of points of sufficient precision to carry out studies on the geometry of the vaulted systems, the identification of the intrados profiles of the ribs and therefore the definition of the curvatures and centres of all the arches making up the vaults.     Konseling Kelompok Berbasis Teknik Self-Management Tazkiyatun Nafsi : Suatu Intervensi Psikologi Dalam Peningkatan Self-Direction in Learning Siswa

    Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi rendahnya self-direction in learning pada siswa. Tujuan yang ingin dicapai adalah meningkatkan self-direction in learning siswa. Studi yang digunakan berupa penelitian dan pengembangan metode. Hal ini karena intervensi yang menggunakan konseling kelompok teknik self-management dengan memadukan tazkiyatun nafsi masih belum ada maka peneliti baru akan mencoba membuat rancangan modul. Untuk itu langkah yang akan dilakukan adalah: (1) Membuat rancangan modul (2) Uji coba rancangan modul untuk melihat efektifitas (3) Evaluasi rancangan modul. Hasil penelitian yang didapat adalah (1) Memperoleh modul konseling kelompok berbasis teknik self-management tazkiyatun nafsi untuk meningkatkan self-direction in learning siswa. (2) Dari hasil uji coba Modul menunjukkan bahwa konseling kelompok berbasis teknik self-management tazkiyatun nafsi efektif untuk meningkatkan self-direction in learning siswa. Adanya peningkatan skor sebelum dan sesudah diberikan konseling kelompok berbasis teknik self-management tazkiyatun nafsi pada ke 5 subjek uji coba. Adanya peningkatan semua aspek self-direction in learning, yaitu insiatif sendiri, self planned, kebutuhan belajar, self conducted, dan evaluasi.     Heat exchange between two interacting nanoparticles beyond the fluctuation-dissipation regime

    We show that the observed non-monotonic behavior of the thermal conductance between two nanoparticles when they are brought into contact is originated by an intricate phase space dynamics. Here it is assumed that this dynamics results from the thermally activated jumping through a rough energy landscape. A hierarchy of relaxation times plays the key role in the description of this complex phase space behaviour.     Social network services enable users to share large quantities of private information. Often, the shared information concerns individuals who are members of the social network but did not upload the information to the service. In such situations, inappropriate sharing preferences can cause conflict and threaten users’ privacy. Since related studies suggest that users prefer to solve multi-party privacy conflicts through negotiation, we introduce a novel approach based on negotiation through arguments. In our approach, users propose privacy settings and support their proposals with logical arguments. The final decision is based on a setting supported by sound arguments

    ‘It’s better than daytime television’: questioning the socio-spatial impacts of massage parlours on residential communities

    It has been shown that street sex work is problematic for some communities, but there is less evidence of the effects of brothels. Emerging research also suggests that impact discourses outlined by residential communities and in regulatory policies should be critiqued, because they are often based on minority community voices, and limited tangible evidence is used to masquerade wider moral viewpoints about the place of sex work. Using a study of residents living in close proximity to brothels in Blackpool, this paper argues that impact is socially and spatially fluid. Impact needs to be evaluated in a more nuanced manner, which is considerate of the heterogeneity of (even one type of) sex work, and the community in question. Brothels in Blackpool had a variety of roles in the everyday socio-spatial fabric; thus also questioning the common assumption that sex work only impacts negatively on residential communities

    Asymptotic Behavior of the Correlator for Polyakov Loops

    The asymptotic behavior of the correlator for Polyakov loop operators separated by a large distance RR is determined for high temperature QCD. It is dominated by nonperturbative effects related to the exchange of magnetostatic gluons. To analyze the asymptotic behavior, the problem is formulated in terms of the effective field theory of QCD in 3 space dimensions. The Polyakov loop operator is expanded in terms of local gauge-invariant operators constructed out of the magnetostatic gauge field, with coefficients that can be calculated using resummed perturbation theory. The asymptotic behavior of the correlator is exp(MR)/R\exp(-MR)/R, where MM is the mass of the lowest-lying glueball in (2+1)(2+1)-dimensional QCD. This result implies that existing lattice calculations of the Polyakov loop correlator at the highest temperatures available do not probe the true asymptotic region in RR.Comment: 10 pages, NUHEP-TH-94-2
