    RELATIVE ABUNDANCE AND MICROHABITAT OF FOUR SYMPATRIC ANTPITTAS IN AN INTERANDEAN VALLEY OF SOUTHERN ECUADOR

    Exploring mechanisms that determine species coexistence is a key step to understand community organization and patterns of distribution of biodiversity. Anpittas, genus Grallaria, offer a great opportunity to measure coexistence mechanisms among closely related species. Antpittas are terrestrial insectivores with a specialized foraging technique and limited dispersal abilities; these factors could produce high levels of niche overlap and consequently reduce the chances of stable coexistence. We explored niche partitioning in space among four antpitta species (Rufous Antpitta, Chesnut-crowned Antpitta, Undulated Antpitta, Tawny Antpitta) which coexist in a tropical Andean valley located in southern Ecuador. We determined the abundance of each antpitta species in mature native forest, shrub, pasture, and páramo habitats, and gathered data about the microhabitat of each species. Abundance was determined using point counts, territories were located by triangulating on individual calls, and microhabitat characteristics were measured within each territory. We found no differences in the abundance or probability of occurrence of species among habitats for Rufous Antpitta, Chesnut-crowned Antpitta, and Undulated Anpitta, but Tawny Antpitta was restricted to páramo. At the microhabitat level, Rufous and Chesnut-crowned Antpittas shared similar vegetation characteristics, with the important presence of shrubs. Undulated Antpitta occurred in a microhabitat characterized by the presence of trees and a ground cover of mosses, while Tawny Antpitta occupied microhabitats with an open vegetation. In general our results suggest that closely related birds could partition their niche at different spatial scales, which could promote the coexistence of species in the tropical Andes

Greens in the soil mitigate the damages of the climatic climate, the bell that helps the adaptation and resilience of the same, pillars of contemporary environmental protection; On the other hand, industry is one of the major contributions to climate change and the deplorable conditions that today are a cause of appearance it seems imperative that companies contribute in the same proportion to the mitigation, adaptation and resilience of climate-change.Esta investigación busca desarrollar la responsabilidad ambiental que experimentan las empresas emisoras de GEI a la atmósfera, también, explicar cómo el Estado puede intervenir en estas empresas por medio de normas imperativas que las vinculen a la construcción de áreas verdes para garantizar los derechos ambientales y desarrollo sostenible.     Validation and reconstruction of flow meter data in the Barcelona water distribution network

The proposed methodology is based on two time-scale forecasting models: a daily model based on a ARIMA time series, while the 10-min model is based on distributing the daily flow using a 10-min demand pattern. The demand patterns have been determined using two methods: correlation analysis and an unsupervised fuzzy logic classification, named LAMDA algorithm. Finally, the proposed methodology has been applied to the Barcelona water distribution network, providing very good results.This work is part of a applied research project granted by ADASA and AGBAR companies.     Production of mexican brown macroalgae fucoidan and fucosidases under an integral green technology bioproceses by the biorefinery concept

    Marine ecosystem can be considered a rather exploited source of natural substances with enormous bioactive potential. In Mexico macro-algae study remain forgotten for research and economic purposes besides the high amount of this resource along the west and east coast. For that reason the Bioferinery Group of the Autonomous University of Coahuila, have been studying the biorefinery concept in order to recover high value byproducts of Mexican brown macro-algae including polysaccharides and enzymes to be applied in food, pharmaceutical and energy industry. Brown macroalgae are an important source of fucoidan, alginate and laminarin which comprise a complex group of macromolecules with a wide range of important biological properties such as anticoagulant, antioxidant, antitumoral and antiviral and also as rich source of fermentable sugars for enzymes production. Additionally, specific enzymes able to degrade algae matrix (fucosidases, sulfatases, aliginases, etc) are important tools to establish structural characteristics and biological functions of these polysaccharides. The aims of the present work were the integral study of bioprocess for macroalgae biomass exploitation by the use of green technologies as hydrothermal extraction and solid state fermentation in order to produce polysaccharides and enzymes (fucoidan and fucoidan hydrolytic enzymes).     Vacuum-annealing induces sub-surface redox-states in surfactant-structured α-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> photoanodes prepared by ink-jet printing

    Transparent nano-structured hematite (α-Fe2O3) films of approximately 550 nm thickness on tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) have been obtained conveniently by ink-jet printing of a Fe(NO3)3/Brij® O10 precursor ink and subsequent annealing at 500 °C in air. When illuminated with a blue LED (λ = 455 nm, ca. 100 mW cm−2), the hematite films exhibited photocurrents of up to 70 μA cm−2 at 0.4 V vs. SCE in 0.1 M NaOH electrolyte. Thermal annealing in vacuum at 500 °C for 2 h increased photocurrents more than three times to 230 μA cm−2 in agreement with previous literature reports for pure hematite materials. These results suggest that a simple ink-jetting process with surfactants is viable. The effects of vacuum-annealing on the photoelectrical properties of α-Fe2O3 films are discussed in terms of a sub-surface state templating hypothesis based on data gathered from photo-transients, field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, X-ray diffraction, photocurrent spectra, and cyclic voltammetry

    Adherence to recommendations by infectious disease consultants and its influence on outcomes of intravenous antibiotic-treated hospitalized patients

    BACKGROUND: Consultation to infectious diseases specialists (ID), although not always performed by treating physicians, is part of hospital's daily practice. This study analyses adherence by treating physicians to written ID recommendations (inserted in clinical records) and its effect on outcome in hospitalized antibiotic-treated patients in a tertiary hospital in Spain. METHODS: A prospective, randomized, one-year study was performed. Patients receiving intravenous antimicrobial therapy prescribed by treating physicians for 3 days were identified and randomised to intervention (insertion of written ID recommendations in clinical records) or non-intervention. Appropriateness of empirical treatments (by treating physicians) was classified as adequate, inadequate or unnecessary. In the intervention group, adherence to recommendations was classified as complete, partial or non-adherence. RESULTS: A total of 1173 patients were included, 602 in the non-intervention and 571 in the intervention group [199 (34.9%) showing complete adherence, 141 (24.7%) partial adherence and 231 (40.5%) non-adherence to recommendations]. In the multivariate analysis for adherence (R2 Cox=0.065, p=0.009), non-adherence was associated with prolonged antibiotic prophylaxis (p=0.004; OR=0.37, 95%CI=0.19-0.72). In the multivariate analysis for clinical failure (R2 Cox=0.126, p<0.001), Charlson index (p<0.001; OR=1.19, 95%CI=1.10-1.28), malnutrition (p=0.006; OR=2.00, 95%CI=1.22-3.26), nosocomial infection (p<0.001; OR=4.12, 95%CI=2.27-7.48) and length of hospitalization (p<0.001; OR=1.01, 95%CI=1.01-1.02) were positively associated with failure, while complete adherence (p=0.001; OR=0.35, 95%CI=0.19-0.64) and adequate initial treatment (p=0.010; OR=0.39, 95%CI=0.19-0.80) were negatively associated. CONCLUSIONS: Adherence to ID recommendations by treating physicians was associated with favorable outcome, in turn associated with shortened length of hospitalization. This may have important health-economic benefits and stimulates further investigation.     Stress myocardial blood flow correlates with ventricular function and synchrony better than myocardial perfusion reserve:A Nitrogen-13 ammonia PET study

    Cardiac PET quantifies stress myocardial blood flow (MBF) and perfusion reserve (MPR), while ECG-gated datasets can measure components of ventricular function simultaneously. Stress MBF seems to outperform MPR in the detection of significant CAD. However, it is uncertain which perfusion measurement is more related to ventricular function. We hypothesized that stress MBF correlates with ventricular function better than MPR in patients studied for suspected myocardial ischemia. We studied 248 patients referred to a rest and adenosine-stress Nitrogen-13 ammonia PET. We performed a multivariate analysis using systolic function (left ventricular ejection fraction, LVEF), diastolic function (mean filling rate in diastole, MFR/3), and synchrony (Entropy) as the outcome variables, and stress MBF, MPR, and relevant covariates as the predictors. Secondarily, we repeated the analysis for the subgroup of patients with and without a previous myocardial infarction (MI). 166 male and 82 female patients (mean age 63 +/- 11 and 67 +/- 11 year, respectively) were included. 60% of the patients presented hypertension, 57% dyslipidemia, 21% type 2 diabetes mellitus, 45% smoking, and 34.7% a previous MI. Mean stress MBF was 1.99 +/- 0.75 mL/g/min, MPR = 2.55 +/- 0.89, LVEF = 61.6 +/- 15%, MFR/3 = 1.12 +/- 0.38 EDV/s, and Entropy = 45.6 +/- 11.3%. There was a significant correlation between stress MBF (P <.001) and ventricular function. This was stronger than the one for MPR (P = .063). Sex, age, diabetes, and extent of previous MI were also significant predictors. Results were similar for the analyses of the 2 subgroups. Stress MBF is better correlated with ventricular function than MPR, as evaluated by Nitrogen-13 ammonia PET, independently from other relevant cardiovascular risk factors and clinical covariates.
