    Intersemiotic translation and transformational creativity

    Get PDF
In this article we approach a case of intersemiotic translation as a paradigmatic example of Boden’s ‘transformational creativity’ category. To develop our argument, we consider Boden’s fundamental notion of ‘conceptual space’ as a regular pattern of semiotic action, or ‘habit’ (sensu Peirce). We exemplify with Gertrude Stein’s intersemiotic translation of Cézanne and Picasso’s proto-cubist and cubist paintings. The results of Stein’s IT transform the conceptual space of modern literature, constraining it towards new patterns of semiosis. Our association of Boden’s framework to describe a cognitive creative phenomenon with a philosophically robust theory of meaning results in a cognitive semiotic account of IT

    Get PDF
Fault-tolerance methods are required to ensure high availability and high reliability in cloud computing environments. In this survey, we address fault-tolerance in the scope of cloud computing. Recently, cloud computing-based environments have presented new challenges to support fault-tolerance and opened new paths to develop novel strategies, architectures, and standards. We provide a detailed background of cloud computing to establish a comprehensive understanding of the subject, from basic to advanced. We then highlight fault-tolerance components and system-level metrics and identify the needs and applications of fault-tolerance in cloud computing. Furthermore, we discuss state-of-the-art proactive and reactive approaches to cloud computing fault-tolerance. We further structure and discuss current research efforts on cloud computing fault-tolerance architectures and frameworks. Finally, we conclude by enumerating future research directions specific to cloud computing fault-tolerance development.publishe

Background: The association between depression, anxiety, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is still unclear. Therefore, a systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to assess the rates of comorbid psychiatric disorders among women with PCOS compared to women without it. Methods: PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science databases were searched from inception to November 27, 2015. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they were original reports in which the rates of mood (bipolar disorder, dysthymia, or major depressive disorder), obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, trauma- and stressor-related disorders, anxiety disorders or psychotic disorders, somatic symptom and related disorders, or eating disorders had been investigated among women with an established diagnosis of PCOS and compared with women without PCOS. Psychiatric diagnosis should have been established by means of a structured diagnostic interview or through a validated screening tool. Data were extracted and pooled using random effects models. Results: Six studies were included in the meta-analysisof these, five reported the rates of anxiety and six provided data on the rates of depression. The rate of subjects with anxiety symptoms was higher in patients with PCOS compared to women without PCOS (odds ratio (OR) =2.7695% confidence interval (CI) 1.26 to 6.02Log OR = 1.013P=0.011). The rate of subjects with depressive symptoms was higher in patients with PCOS compared to women without PCOS (OR = 3.5195% CI 1.97 to 6.24Log OR =1.255P < 0.001). Conclusion: Anxiety and depression symptoms are more prevalent in patients with PCOS.National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPqConselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico) [305274/2014-7]Department of Psychiatry, Federal University of São Paulo (Escola Paulista de Medicina – UNIFESP), São Paulo, SP, BrazilDepartment of Psychiatry, Fortaleza University, Fortaleza, Ceará, BrazilLaboratory of Molecular Psychiatry Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, BrazilDepartment of Psychiatry, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, BrazilDepartment of Psychiatry, Federal University of São Paulo (Escola Paulista de Medicina – UNIFESP), R Borges Lagoa 570, BR-04038020 Sao Paulo, SP, Brazil.CNPq: 305274/2014-7Web of Scienc

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)To characterize Trypanosoma cruzi (TcI) isolated from a Panstrongylus megistus specimen found in one of the biggest metropolitan areas of Latin America, the relationship between the TcI group of T. cruzi and the transmission cycle in the urban environment was studied. Methods: The T. cruzi strain, Pm, was isolated in a culture medium from the evolutionary forms present in the hindgut of a live male specimen of P. megistus found in the Jabaquara subway in Sao Paulo City. The sample from the triatomine showed trypomastigote forms of Trypanosomatidae, which were inoculated in the peritoneum of Balb/c mice. The sample was then inoculated in Liver Infusion Tryptose medium and J774 cells for the molecular identification and characterization of the parasite. The Pm strain of T. cruzi was identified by isolation in axenic culture medium, and based on the morphology, cell infection, growth kinetics, and molecular characterization. Results: After isolation, the protozoan was identified as T. cruzi. No parasites were detected in the peripheral blood of the animal, which can be a characteristic inherent to the strain of T. cruzi that was isolated. Cell invasion assays were performed in triplicate in the J774 cell line to confirm the invasive ability of the Pm strain and revealed amastigote forms of the parasite within macrophages. Conclusions: Our biological and molecular characterizations helped understand parasite-host interactions and their evolutionary history in context of the associations between vectors, ecotopes, hosts, and groups of the parasite.492183189Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior (CAPES), Brasilia, DF, BrazilPrograma de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento Cientifico (PADC)Faculdade de Ciencias Farmaceuticas (FCFAR)Campus de Araraquara, Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)Instituto de Biologia (IB), Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES

Objective: To identify and describe the profile of patients placed on a single waiting list for renal transplantation in the state of Sao Paulo. Methods: Cross-sectional epidemiological study of quantitative approach to identify and describe the profile of patients placed on a single waiting list for renal transplantation. In the period from 2009 to 2015, a survey was conducted in the databases of the Notification, Collection and Distribution Center of Organs of the Single Technical Registry, and the following characteristics were established as variables: clinical, demographic and information related to the convocation result. The sample included 12,415 patients undergoing hemodialysis who were simultaneously registered for renal transplantation. The Chi-Square and Student's t-test were used for descriptive statistical analysis and the Kaplan-Meier estimate was used for significance. Results: A total of 12,415 patients were included, mean age was 50 years, male gender (59.6%), white color (63.1%), blood type O (48.9%), metropolitan region of Sao Paulo (73.82%), unspecified diagnosis (34.5%), did not undergo transplantation (77.2%), and without clinical conditions to perform the transplant (99.8%). Conclusion: Knowing the profile of patients with chronic kidney disease on the single waiting list allows the development of new health care strategies for reducing mainly morbidity and mortality rates. There is lack in meeting the care demands and high rates of refusal.Objetivo: Identificar e descrever o perfil dos pacientes inscritos em lista única de espera para a realização do transplante renal no estado de São Paulo.
