A review of the Neuropterida of Liguria (North-West Italy)

    Get PDF
Liguria is a small region of Northern Italy; despite its great environmental diversity, this area was never subjected to a thorough research on Neuropterida, so there were only few isolated records, included in papers concerning the whole Italian fauna of these insects. In the last three years specific samplings allowed to double the number of known species, from 42 to 85 belonging to 10 families. The aim of this contribution is to provide a provisional checklist of the Ligurian Neuropterid

A faunal and historical survey of sialidae (insecta: megaloptera) in continental Portugal

Despite the existence of two old, but well known, publications that cite Portuguese localities for the Sialidae (McLachlan, 1880; Navás, 1908), all more recent faunal works fail to report this family from Portugal (e.g., Monserrat, 1986; Aspöck et al., 2001; Aspöck & Aspöck, 2011). We have recently reported Sialidae as a new taxon from Portugal (Badano et al., 2011), but Megaloptera turn out to be relatively well known to aquatic biologists in Portugal (Teixeira et al., 2009). Here, a survey of the distribution of Sialidae in continental Portugal is presented within the framework of a collaboration with the Portuguese biodiversity project NaturData

Rediscovering Megaloptera in mainland Portugal after more than one century, a "reborn"order for the country. Sialis fuliginosa Pictet, 1836 (Megaloptera: Sialidae) is recorded from Portugal for the first time after an historic unclear citation more than one century ago. Photographs of adult and larval habitus are also provide

A checklist of the Neuropterida of the Iglesiente area (SW Sardinia) is presented. On the whole, one species of Raphidioptera and 25 of Neuroptera are recorded on the basis of the inspection of public collections as well as from the study of specimens gathered during recent fi eld investigations by the Centro Nazionale per lo Studio e la Conservazione della Biodiversit? Forestale "Bosco Fontana" of Verona. Sympherobius luqueti Leraut, 1991 (Hemerobiidae) and Helicoconis hispanica Ohm, 1965 (Coniopterygidae) are new for Sardini

State of the art on Neuropterida of Sicily and Malta

Sicily, the largest Mediterranean island, is surrounded by many small islands (Aeolian Islands, Ustica, Aegadian Islands, Pantelleria, Linosa, Lampedusa, Maltese Islands), some of which forming archipelagoes. The authors, after a historical sketch of the research on Neuropterida in Sicily (sensu lato), analyze the biodiversity of the area, highlighting the species richness and providing an up-to-date check-list. The lack of knowledge on some of the most paradigmatic communities of Neuropterida is discussed in relation to their various habitats. The distributional patterns of Sicilian Neuropterida are interpreted in order to obtain a biogeographical characterization of the area. It is confirmed that the location of Sicily and its surrounding islands forms a bridge between north and south and a door from the W Mediterranean region to the oriental Mediterranean basi

A male and a female of Isoscelipteron fulvum Costa, 1863 (Neuroptera: Berothidae) have been collected in the Catena Costiera mountains (Calabria, Cosenza province). This represents the rediscovery of that species in Italy after the description of the taxon made by Achille Costa in 1863. Aspects of the morphological variability of this species are discussed.

ABSTRACT Italy was likely the first country in the world to have a complete list of all the species of animals known for its territory, thanks to the project ‘Checklist delle Specie della Fauna d'Italia’. The project on the ‘Updated Checklist of the Italian Fauna’ started in 2020 and the process is now complete for the data on the superorder Neuropterida. In the period between the first and the most recent version of the checklist, the evolution of knowledge relating to the Italian territory was constantly updated every semester into the online repertoire edited by the author. Moreover an online English version within the “World Neuropterida Faunas” project was created and subsequently updated. This report discusses the thirty-year development of the overall and local knowledge of this group of insects in Italy, analyzing the strengths and shortcomings, together with the repercussions of the studies finalized for the protection and conservation of a territory within the Mediterranean area, a hotspot of world organic biodiversity
