    The NANOGrav 11 yr Data Set: Limits on Gravitational Wave Memory

    The mergers of supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) promise to be incredible sources of gravitational waves (GWs). While the oscillatory part of the merger gravitational waveform will be outside the frequency sensitivity range of pulsar timing arrays, the nonoscillatory GW memory effect is detectable. Further, any burst of GWs will produce GW memory, making memory a useful probe of unmodeled exotic sources and new physics. We searched the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) 11 yr data set for GW memory. This data set is sensitive to very low-frequency GWs of ~3 to 400 nHz (periods of ~11 yr–1 month). Finding no evidence for GWs, we placed limits on the strain amplitude of GW memory events during the observation period. We then used the strain upper limits to place limits on the rate of GW memory causing events. At a strain of 2.5 × 10⁻¹⁴, corresponding to the median upper limit as a function of source sky position, we set a limit on the rate of GW memory events at <0.4 yr⁻¹. That strain corresponds to an SMBHB merger with reduced mass of ηM ~ 2 × 10¹⁰ M_⊙ and inclination of ι = π/3 at a distance of 1 Gpc. As a test of our analysis, we analyzed the NANOGrav 9 yr data set as well. This analysis found an anomolous signal, which does not appear in the 11 yr data set. This signal is not a GW, and its origin remains unknown

    Studies of bulk and thin films of FeTe using Moessbauer spectroscopy showed that FeTe has one noncubic Fe (+2) site which is 3d2 4s 4p3 hybridized. The presence of dangling bands was indicated in spectra of FeTe thin films. The films showed a tendency of texture formation. The substrate was observed to influence the film structure and nature of bonds in films

    Lead pollution resulting from vehicular traffic in Chandigarh,India was assessed by using two pleurocarpic, ectohydric mosses (Entodon concinnus and Herpetineuron toccoae) collected from pollution free area in Kasauli. Of the two mosses tested for lead accumulation, E. concinnus was found to be more efficient than H. toccoae (50.3ppm vs 34.4ppm)

    Real-time human action recognition on an embedded, reconfigurable video processing architecture

    Copyright @ 2008 Springer-Verlag.In recent years, automatic human motion recognition has been widely researched within the computer vision and image processing communities. Here we propose a real-time embedded vision solution for human motion recognition implemented on a ubiquitous device. There are three main contributions in this paper. Firstly, we have developed a fast human motion recognition system with simple motion features and a linear Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. The method has been tested on a large, public human action dataset and achieved competitive performance for the temporal template (eg. “motion history image”) class of approaches. Secondly, we have developed a reconfigurable, FPGA based video processing architecture. One advantage of this architecture is that the system processing performance can be reconfiured for a particular application, with the addition of new or replicated processing cores. Finally, we have successfully implemented a human motion recognition system on this reconfigurable architecture. With a small number of human actions (hand gestures), this stand-alone system is performing reliably, with an 80% average recognition rate using limited training data.     Systematic study of high-pTp_T hadron and photon production with the PHENIX experiment

    The suppression of hadrons with large transverse momentum (pTp_{\rm T}) in central Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV compared to a binary scaled p+p reference is one of the major discoveries at RHIC. To understand the nature of this suppression PHENIX has performed detailed studies of the energy and system-size dependence of the suppression pattern, including the first RHIC measurement near SPS energies. An additional source of information is provided by direct photons. Since they escape the medium basically unaffected they can provide a high pTp_{\rm T} baseline for hard-scattering processes. An overview of hadron production at high pTp_{\rm T} in different colliding systems and at energies from sNN=22.4200\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 22.4 - 200 GeV will be given.
