Transonic and supersonic Euler computations of vortex-dominated flow fields about a generic fighter

Flow fields about a generic flighter model were computed using FL057, a 3-D, finite volume Euler code. Computed pressure coefficients, forces, and moments at several Mach numbers (0.6, 0.8, 1.2, 1.4, and 1.6) are compared with wind tunnel data over a wide range of angles of attack in order to determine the applicability of the code for the analysis of fighter configurations. Two configurations were studied, a wing-body and a wing-body-chine. FL057 predicted pressure distributions, forces, and moments well at low angles of attack, at which the flow was fully attached. The FL057 predictions were also accurate for some test conditions once the leading edge vortex became well established. At the subsonic speeds, FL057 predicted vortex breakdown earlier than that seen in the experimental results. Placing the chine on the forebody delayed the onset of bursting and improved the correlation between numerical and experimental data at the subsonic conditions

    Hydrogen Compounds of Group-IV Nanosheets

The structural and electronic properties of the hydrides of silicene and germanene have been studied using ab initio calculations. The trend for the M-H (M=C, Si, Ge) bond lengths, and corresponding bond energies, is consistent with the atomic size trend, and comparable to those of MH_4 hydrides. Band structures were also obtained for the buckled configuration, which is the stable form for both silicene and germanene. Upon hydrogenation, both silicane (indirect gap) and germanane (direct gap) are semiconducting.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

Structure and dynamics of the interface between a binary hard-sphere crystal of NaCl type and its coexisting binary fluid

Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to study the [100] and [111] orientations of the crystal-melt interface between an ordered two-component hard sphere with a NaCl structure and its coexisting binary hard-sphere fluid. The diameter ratio of the two types of hard spheres making up the mixture is taken to be 0.414. This work complements our earlier interface simulations [J. Chem. Phys.116, 3410] for the same diameter ratio at lower pressures where the smaller component is immiscible in the solid and the fluid mixture coexists with a pure FCC crystal of large particles. Density profiles and diffusion coefficient profiles are presented for the AB interfacial system. We find that for this system, the transition from crystal-like to fluid-like behavior of both the density and diffusion constant profiles occurs over a narrower region than that seen in our previous studies [J. Chem. Phys. 116, 3410] of the FCC/binary fluid system. But similar to what was found in the FCC/binary fluid interface the transition region for the large particle diffusion constant is shifted about the size of the large particles toward the fluid phase relative to that for the small particles.Comment: 8 page

ENHANCING VALUE OF NIGERIAN GEMS THROUGH LAPIDARIES

    Get PDF
Various geological reports on Nigerian Geology reviewed indicate that gemstones occur in all the geologic units of Nigeria. They are however concentrated within the 400km long and 150km wide NE-SW trending pegmatite belt of Central Nigeria. At present only one Lapidary situated in Jos exist in the country where gems are faceted and polished into different shapes. Surprisingly, demand for cut and polished Nigerian gems which have several uses is on the increase internationally. This paper will attempt to look at the various gems in Nigeria in the light of the mineral supply process. However, more emphasis will be laid on the techniques of processing the gems

Hazard-consistent response spectra in the Region of Murcia (Southeast Spain): comparison to earthquake-resistant provisions

Hazard-consistent ground-motion characterisations of three representative sites located in the Region of Murcia (southeast Spain) are presented. This is the area where the last three damaging events in Spain occurred and there is a significant amount of data for comparing them with seismic hazard estimates and earthquake-resistant provisions. Results of a probabilistic seismic hazard analysis are used to derive uniform hazard spectra (UHS) for the 475-year return period, on rock and soil conditions. Hazard deaggregation shows that the largest hazard contributions are due to small, local events for short-period target motions and to moderate, more distant events for long-period target motions. For each target motion and site considered, the associated specific response spectra (SRS) are obtained. It is shown that the combination of two SRS, for short- and long-period ground motions respectively, provides a good approximation to the UHS at each site. The UHS are compared to design response spectra contained in current Spanish and European seismic codes for the 475-year return period. For the three sites analysed, only the Eurocode 8 (EC8) type 2 spectrum captures the basic shape of the UHS (and not the EC8 type 1, as could be expected a priori). An alternative response spectrum, anchored at short- and long-period accelerations, is tested, providing a close match to the UHS spectra at the three sites. Results underline the important contribution of the frequent, low-to-moderate earthquakes that characterize the seismicity of this area to seismic hazard (at the 475-year return period)

    Ages for exoplanet host stars

Age is an important characteristic of a planetary system, but also one that is difficult to determine. Assuming that the host star and the planets are formed at the same time, the challenge is to determine the stellar age. Asteroseismology provides precise age determination, but in many cases the required detailed pulsation observations are not available. Here we concentrate on other techniques, which may have broader applicability but also serious limitations. Further development of this area requires improvements in our understanding of the evolution of stars and their age-dependent characteristics, combined with observations that allow reliable calibration of the various techniques.Comment: To appear in "Handbook of Exoplanets", eds. This study examines physical activity patterns among women, from pre-pregnancy to the second trimester of pregnancy, and the relationship between physical activity status based on physical activity guidelines and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and depression over pregnancy. 56 healthy pregnant women self reported physical activity, HRQoL and depression at 10-15 and 19-24 weeks of pregnancy and physical activity before pregnancy. Whereas vigorous leisure physical activity decreased after conception, moderate leisure physical activity and work related physical activity remained stable over time. The prevalence of recommended physical activity was 39.3% and 12.5% in the 1st and 2nd trimesters of pregnancy respectively, and 14.3% pre-pregnancy. From the 1st to the 2nd pregnancy trimester, most physical HRQoL dimensions scores decreased and only mental component increased, independently of physical activity status. No changes in mean depression scores were observed. These data suggest that physical activity patterns change with pregnancy and that physical and mental components are differentially affected by pregnancy course, independently of physical activity status.
