    Early reserve effects linked to small home ranges of a commercial fish, Diplodus sargus, Sparidae

    Studies that combine both the ecological responses of marine species and protection measures with movement patterns and habitat use are of major importance in order to better understand the performance of marine protected areas (MPA) and how species respond to their implementation. However, few studies have assessed MPA performance by relating local individual movement patterns and the observed reserve effects. In this study, we combined acoustic telemetry with abundance estimates to study the early effects of a recently established small coastal MPA on the local populations of white seabream. The results show that even small, recently established coastal MPAs can increase the abundance and biomass of commercial fish species, provided that target species have small home ranges and exhibit high site fidelity

The result of these changes is that useful STR profiles can now be obtained from previously untypeable forensic DNA samples. Analysis of DNA from ancient material represents an important role in molecular anthropology, although there are many limitations concerning low DNA quantity and/or degraded DNA, and/or PCR inhibitors. These factors can make it difficult to decide whether to continue with STR analysis, which STR panel to use and how much DNA to add to PCR reaction. With all these constraints, DNA quantification represents an important tool to decide which method will follow in order to improve workflow and have good results in less time-consuming. The Quantifiler® Trio DNA method provides a quality index (QI) to detect the presence of degraded DNA along with PCR inhibitors.This guide allows the selection of the optimal short tandem repeat (STR) analysis chemistry (autosomal, or miniSTR) and streamlines the workflow while increasing downstream analysis success rates. In order to compare DNA quality from different extraction methods, samples from 46 exhumed Middle Ages individuals were extracted with modified phenol-chloroform method and also PrepFiler Express BTA™ method. DNA was quantified with Quantifiler® Trio DNA Quantification in an Applied Biosystems® 7500 Real-Time PCR System.     Longer duration of obesity is associated with a reduction in urinary angiotensinogen in prepubertal children

    Background: We aimed to study the impact of obesity on urinary excretion of angiotensinogen (U-AGT) in prepubertal children, focusing on the duration of obesity and gender. Also, we aimed to evaluate whether plasma angiotensinogen (P-AGT) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) play a role in the putative association. Methods: Cross-sectional evaluation of 305 children aged 8–9 years (160 normal weight, 86 overweight, and 59 obese). Anthropometric measurements and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring were performed. Angiotensinogen (AGT) was determined by a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit and H2O2 by a microplate fluorometric assay. Results: U-AGT and P-AGT levels were similar across body mass index (BMI) groups and between sexes. However, boys who were overweight/obese since the age of 4 years presented lower levels of U-AGT compared with those of normal weight at the same age. In children who were overweight/obese since the age of 4, urinary H2O2 decreased with P-AGT. Conclusions: A higher duration of obesity was associated with decreased U-AGT in boys, thus reflecting decreased intrarenal activity of the renin–angiotensin system. Also, children with a longer duration of obesity showed an inverse association between urinary H2O2 and P-AGT.     Determinants of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity in prepubertal children

    BACKGROUND: Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a noninvasive technique to evaluate arterial stiffness, a dynamic property of the vessels, reflecting their structure and function. Childhood obesity is associated with several cardiovascular comorbidities and to the progression of atherosclerosis. We aimed to compare carotid-femoral PWV between normal weight and overweight/obese prepubertal children and to quantify its association with other cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of 315 children aged 8-9years. Anthropometrics, 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (BP) and carotid-femoral PWV were measured. Classification of obesity was according to World Health Organization (WHO) body mass index (BMI)-for-age reference values. RESULTS: Compared to normal weight children, overweight and obese children presented significantly higher levels of PWV (4.95 (P25-P75: 4.61-5.23), 5.00 (4.71-5.33), 5.10 (4.82-5.50) m/s, respectively; ptrend<0.001). Significant positive correlations were found between PWV and total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting insulin and insulin resistance levels (HOMA-IR) and with high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). In a multivariate linear regression model adjusted for sex, age, height and 24-h systolic blood pressure z-score, the independent determinants of PWV were BMI, HOMA-IR and the absence of dipping. CONCLUSIONS: The association between PWV and the loss of dipping and insulin resistance levels, independently of the BMI, reinforces the contribution of these comorbidities to vascular injury in early life

    Association of myeloperoxidase levels with cardiometabolic factors and renal function in prepubertal children

    INTRODUCTION: Myeloperoxidase (MPO), an enzyme linking obesity and cardiovascular (CV) risk in adults, has rarely been studied in young children and no studies assessed its association with renal function. We sought to explore a possible association between serum MPO levels, obesity, CV risk factors and renal function in prepubertal children. MATERIALS/METHODS: Cross-sectional evaluation of 309 children aged 8-9 years (161 normal weight, 148 overweight/obese), members of the birth cohort Generation I (Portugal). Anthropometrics (body mass index (BMI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and % body fat mass (%BFM) by bioelectrical impedance analysis), 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and pulse wave velocity (PWV) were measured. Insulin resistance was estimated by the HOMA index (considering serum fasting glucose and insulin determinations). Serum MPO levels were assessed by immunoenzymatic assay. RESULTS: MPO levels were positively associated with obesity indices (BMI z-score, WHtR and %BFM). Higher MPO levels were associated with higher 24-h and night-time mean arterial pressure, with nondipping and with higher values of insulin resistance. In normal weight children, the endothelial function, as evaluated indirectly by PWV, was an independent predictor of MPO levels. In overweight/obese children, estimated glomerular filtration rate increased significantly across tertiles of MPO (Ptrend = 0·031) and this association held after adjustment for age, sex, neutrophil and monocyte counts and CV risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: Our results reinforce the role of MPO as a risk marker in obesity and related CV morbidities in young children. MPO levels associate with the dipping pattern and PWV and, among overweight/obese children, an association exists between MPO and renal function

    Influência do tempo de liofilização nas características da manga cv. Kent em pó.

    O objetivo deste trabalho foi o de avaliar a influência do tempo de liofilização sobre as características físico-químicas do pó da polpa de manga cv. Kent. As liofilizações foram realizadas em três diferentes tempos, 17, 24 e 31 h, utilizando maltodextrina (DE20) como adjuvante na concentração de 10% (m/m). A polpa de manga foi caracterizada através das análises: umidade, pH, sólidos solúveis, ácido ascórbico, cor (escala CIELab), atividade de água e acidez titulável. As características avaliadas nos pós obtidos foram: umidade, atividade de água, higroscopicidade, ácido ascórbico, cor (escala CIELab) e rendimento. Não foi observado diferença (p > 0,05) no conteúdo de ácido ascórbico nas liofilizações. A liofilização de 17 h apresentou diferença (p< 0,05) em relação aos tempos de 24 e 31 h nos resultados de higroscopicidade e umidade. Comportamento semelhante foi observado ao avaliar o parâmetro de cor a* cuja intensidade foi diminuída em decorrência da remoção de água que concentrou os pigmentos.     Evaluación de la hipertensión arterial resistente por monitoreo residencial de la presión arterial

    BACKGROUND: Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) is considered the gold standard for the diagnostic confirmation of resistant hypertension (RH). However, home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) has been considered an option, because of its lower cost and greater comfort. OBJECTIVE: To compare the values obtained by HBPM with those obtained by ABPM in the identification of patients with resistant hypertension. METHODS: A total of 51 consecutive patients with resistant hypertension were selected. All were adults of both genders and were undergoing treatment in an outpatient referral clinic from January 2007 to September 2009. Casual office blood pressure (BP), 24-hour ABPM, and HBPM were performed according to current guidelines, with a maximum two-week interval between the methods. RESULTS: The comparison of ABPM (mean daytime) with HBPM showed a good correlation between them, both for systolic blood pressure (SBP) and for diastolic blood pressure (DBP): SBP r = 0.70, CI = 0.51-0.82, DBP r = 0.69, CI = 0.52-0.81. RH was confirmed by ABPM in 33 patients and by HBPM in 37, with no significant difference between the methods. CONCLUSION: According to the results obtained, we conclude that HBPM is a method that can be used as an alternative to ABPM for the diagnostic confirmation of RH.FUNDAMENTO: El monitoreo ambulatorio de la presión arterial (MAPA) es considerado el gold standard para la confirmación diagnóstica de la hipertensión arterial resistente (HAR). Mientras tanto, el monitoreo residencial de la presión arterial (MRPA) ha sido considerado una opción, por su costo menor y mayor confort. OBJETIVO: Comparar los valores obtenidos por la MRPA con los obtenidos por la MAPA en la identificación de pacientes hipertensos resistentes. MÉTODOS: Fueron seleccionados consecutivamente 51 pacientes hipertensos resistentes, adultos de ambos sexos, en tratamiento ambulatorio de referencia, de ene/2007-set/2009. La medida de la presión arterial (PA) casual de consultorio, MAPA de 24 horas y MRPA fueron realizadas según las directrices vigentes, con intervalo máximo de dos semanas entre los métodos. RESULTADOS: Al comparar la MAPA (media de vigilia) y MRPA, fue obtenida buena correlación entre ambas, tanto para la presión arterial sistólica (PAS) como para la diastólica (PAD): PAS r = 0,70, IC = 0,51-0,82; PAD r = 0,69, IC = 0,52-0,81. La HAR fue confirmada por la MAPA en 33 pacientes y por la MRPA en 37 de esos, no habiendo diferencia significativa entre los dos métodos.     Useful ultrasonographic parameters to predict difficult laryngoscopy and difficult tracheal intubation-a systematic review and meta-analysis

Ultrasonography is a promising tool for perioperative airway assessment, nevertheless it is still unclear which sonographic parameters are useful predictors of difficult laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation. To determine the ultrasonographic predictors of a difficult airway that could be applied for routine practice, a systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted. Literature search was performed on PubMED, Web of Science and Embase using the selected keywords. Human primary studies, published in English with the use of ultrasonography to prediction of difficult laryngoscopy or tracheal intubation were included. A total of 19 articles (4,570 patients) were analyzed for the systematic review and 12 articles (1,141 patients) for the meta-analysis. Standardized mean differences between easy and difficult laryngoscopy groups were calculated and the parameter effect size quantified. A PRISMA methodology was used and the critical appraisal tool from Joanna Briggs Institute was applied. Twenty-six sonographic parameters were studied. The overall effect of the distance from skin to hyoid bone (p = 0.02); skin to epiglottis (p = 0.02); skin to the anterior commissure of vocal cords (p = 0.02), pre-epiglottis space to distance between epiglottis and midpoint between vocal cords (p = 0.01), hyomental distance in neutral (p < 0.0001), and extended (p = 0.0002) positions and ratio of hyomental distance in neutral to extended (p = 0.001) was significant. This study shows that hyomental distance in the neutral position is the most reliable parameter for pre-operative airway ultrasound assessment.
