    "The Myth of the Woman Warrior and World War II in Soviet Culture" defines, analyzes, and explains the figure of the Soviet "woman warrior" who participated in World War II, asking the questions: what is the nature of the woman warrior in works about World War II and what does her portrayal tell us about Soviet culture and memory? Although the woman warrior has deep roots in Russian culture, this topic has received almost no attention from a cultural perspective. After a discussion of the 1930s militarization, this study turns to works depicting women who participated in WWII and argues that these depictions fall into three types based on deep archetypes: the martyr, handmaiden, and the "polianitsa," or knight. This dissertation elucidates essentialist and constructivist intersections by investigating why certain images of women motivated Soviet citizens during the war and then became powerful myths that shaped national consciousness

    “No Nastas’ias on the Volga: Soviet Women Veterans andFolkloric Self-Representations” investigates how the Sovietwomen pilots of the 46th Guards Regiment who served in WorldWar II employed folkloric imagery to represent themselves inwartime poetry and in memoirs published between 1960 and 2002.The article argues that the women’s employment of this imagerygives insight into how they constructed their collective identity,how they negotiated shifting expectations for gender, and how, inthe twentieth century, they interpreted folkloric images theyinherited from the past. The author’s approach bridges disparatebodies of scholarship in the fields of folkloristics, gender studies,and history. The author analyzes the meanings of both the imageswhich the pilots appropriated—the bogatyr’ [the male knight],witch, and to a lesser extent, the eagle and swallow—as well as akey folkloric personage whom memoirists ignored: the polianitsa[woman knight].     Should Central Banks Use Distributed Ledger Technology and Digital Currencies to Advance Financial Inclusion?

    This paper examines how central banks might use distributed ledger technology (“DLT”) to improve access to safe and affordable financial products and services. We consider how central banks might use DLT to advance objectives such as Anti-Money Laundering (“AML”) compliance and discuss both central bank digital currencies (“CBDC”) and private digital currencies. We consider implementation challenges for these new approaches relating to interoperability, privacy, and efficiency. We conclude that financial inclusion is far from an assured outcome: central banks must work to ensure that any new technologies they adopt or foster do not exclude marginalized groups and instead focus with intentionality on low-income households. Moreover, difficult issues with respect to financial disintermediation, credit availability, and financial stability would need to be addressed

    Perinatal deaths in Australia 1993–2012

    Summary The loss of a baby who was either stillborn or died in the first weeks of life is a tragic event that affects around 3,000 families every year in Australia. Perinatal mortality is widely recognised as an important indicator of population health. While Australia is one of the safest places in the world to give birth, almost 1 in 100 pregnancies will end in a perinatal death. Perinatal deaths in Australia 1993–2012 represents the first comprehensive national report on perinatal mortality in Australia and includes a detailed analysis of data relating to stillbirths and neonatal deaths for the period 2011-2012 and an analysis of trends for 1993–2012. The aim of this report is to gain a better understanding of the causes of perinatal deaths at a population level and identify changes in perinatal mortality over time. Data used for this report come from information recorded in jurisdictional perinatal data collections and information collated by state and territory perinatal mortality review committees. For the 2 years 2011 and 2012, just over 6,000 babies died during the perinatal period: a rate of 9.9 deaths per 1,000 births. Approximately three-quarters of those deaths were stillbirths (4,485) with the remaining 1,580 deaths being neonatal deaths. The rate of perinatal mortality varied by the state or territory in which babies were born, with the highest perinatal mortality rate recorded in Victoria (12.2 deaths per 1,000 births) and the lowest in New South Wales (8.3 deaths per 1,000 births). The rates also varied considerably between different subgroups including those based on mothers\u27 level of remoteness, socioeconomic status, age, smoking status, body mass index (BMI) and Indigenous status. The perinatal mortality rate of babies born to mothers who identified as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander was almost double that of babies of non-Indigenous mothers (17.1 versus 9.6 deaths per 1,000 births). Similarly, the perinatal mortality rate was almost 50% higher among babies whose mothers smoked compared with those who did not smoke (13.3 versus 8.9 deaths per 1,000 births). The stillbirth rate for babies of teenage mothers and mothers older than 45 was more than double that for mothers aged 30–34 (13.9 and 17.1 versus 6.4 deaths per 1,000 births). Over the 20-year period 1993–2012, the overall perinatal mortality rate was stable at around 10 deaths per 1,000 live births. There was a decrease in the rate of neonatal death (3.2 to 2.4 deaths per 1,000 live births) and an increase in the stillbirth rate (6.4 to 7.2 deaths per 1,000 births). Although remaining high, the report shows a decrease of 20% in the perinatal mortality rate among babies of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers. During 2011 and 2012, congenital abnormality was the leading condition in the fetus classified by the PSANZ Perinatal Death Classification as the cause of stillbirths (26.3% of stillbirths) and neonatal deaths (33.1%). An additional PSANZ Neonatal Death Classification of extreme prematurity was the leading condition contributing to deaths in the neonatal period (33.5%). When examined by Indigenous status, however, the leading cause of perinatal death among babies of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers was spontaneous pre-term birth (26.8% of stillbirths and 48.0% of neonatal deaths). This report provides insight into the trends in perinatal mortality in Australia, and highlights variations in some of Australia\u27s most vulnerable and disadvantaged population subgroups. This indicates areas that warrant further investigation and attention by clinicians, researchers and health policy makers

    Barriers to Outdoor Recreation for Marginalized Groups at the University of Montana

    Exclusion from outdoor recreation reflects legacies of oppression of marginalized communities and makes access to the outdoors not equally available. In the United States, approximately 38% of Black Americans and 48% of Hispanic Americans participated in outdoor recreation in 2020. This is compared to 55% participation among Caucasian Americans. Many other intersecting identities are actively excluded, including people with disabilities, fat populations, and members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community; furthermore, class-based hierarchies are shown through the restricted outdoor access of low-income populations. While numerous studies show a lack of diversity in outdoor recreation, little to no research has been conducted on the experience of marginalized groups in higher education settings globally and at the University of Montana (UM). The first part of our project includes an event where we invited outdoor community groups within the Missoula and UM community to connect with students and share their resources. We also conducted an anonymous survey of students at the University of Montana to better understand their experiences with outdoor recreation and the barriers in place. Participants were asked a series of questions about their recreation experiences and participation with various outdoor groups within the Missoula community. They were also asked questions relating to the barriers they may face to outdoor participation, with responses including quantitative answers and open-space personal reflections. Respondents reported facing seven key barriers to outdoor recreation: financial, social, lack of information, accessibility, time and money, safety, and transportation. The main objective of our research is to better understand the experience of and identify the barriers to outdoor recreation for various marginalized groups at the University of Montana so that we can better promote community awareness

    Report on the 2013 Rapid Assessment Survey of Marine Species at New England Bays and Harbors

    Introduced species (i.e., non-native species that have become established in a new location) have increasingly been recognized as a concern as they have become more prevalent in marine and terrestrial environments (Mooney and Cleland 2001; Simberloff et al. 2005). The ability of introduced species to alter population, community, and ecosystem structure and function, as well as cause significant economic damage is well documented (Carlton 1989, 1996b, 2000; Cohen and Carlton 1995; Cohen et al. 1995; Elton 1958; Meinesz et al. 1993; Occhipinti-Ambrogi and Sheppard 2007; Pimentel et al. 2005; Thresher 2000). The annual economic costs incurred from managing the approximately 50,000 introduced species in the United States alone are estimated to be over $120 billion (Pimentel et al. 2005). Having a monitoring network in place to track new introductions and distributional changes of introduced species is critical for effective management, as these efforts may be more successful when species are detected before they have the chance to become established. A rapid assessment survey is one such method for early detection of introduced species. With rapid assessment surveys, a team of taxonomic experts record and monitor marine species–providing a baseline inventory of native, introduced, and cryptogenic (i.e., unknown origin) species (as defined by Carlton 1996a)–and document range expansions of previously identified species. Since 2000, five rapid assessment surveys have been conducted in New England. These surveys focus on recording species at marinas, which often are in close proximity to transportation vectors (i.e., recreational boats). Species are collected from floating docks and piers because these structures are accessible regardless of the tidal cycle. Another reason for sampling floating docks and other floating structures is that marine introduced species are often found to be more prevalent on artificial surfaces than natural surfaces (Glasby and Connell 2001; Paulay et al. 2002). The primary objectives of these surveys are to: (1) identify native, introduced, and cryptogenic marine species, (2) expand on data collected in past surveys, (3) assess the introduction status and range extensions of documented introduced species, and (4) detect new introductions.     Effectiveness of dietary interventions in mental health treatment : A rapid review of reviews

    Aim This rapid review of reviews aimed to determine the extent of research undertaken on the effectiveness of dietary interventions for individuals with a mental disorder. Methods Three databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Reviews and Cochrane Trials) were searched to February 2021 for systematic reviews including experimental studies assessing the effectiveness of dietary interventions with physical or mental health related outcomes in adults or children with one or more of: severe mental illness, depression or anxiety, eating disorders, or substance use disorder. Results are presented descriptively. Results The number of included reviews was 46 (67% in severe mental illness, 20% in depression and anxiety, 7% in eating disorders, and 7% in substance use disorders). Most reviews were published since 2016 (59%), and included studies conducted in adults (63%). Interventions in the eating disorders and severe mental illness reviews were predominantly education and behaviour change, whereas interventions in the substance use disorders, and depression and anxiety reviews were predominantly supplementation (e.g. omega-3). Twenty-eight and twelve of the reviews respectively reported mental health and dietary outcomes for one or more included studies. Most reviews in severe mental illness, and depression and anxiety reported conclusions supporting the positive effects of dietary intervention, including positive effects on weight-related or mental health outcomes, and on mental health outcomes, respectively. Conclusions A larger number of systematic reviews were identified which evaluated dietary interventions in individuals with severe mental illness, and depression and anxiety, compared with substance use disorders, and eating disorders. Dietary intervention is an important component of the treatment that should be available to individuals living with mental disorders, to support their physical and mental health

    Effects of Sex Hormones on Ocular Blood Flow and Intraocular Pressure in Primary Open Angle Glaucoma: A Review

    Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is a multifactorial optic neuropathy characterized by progressive retinal ganglion cell death and visual field loss. Some speculate that gender plays a role in the risk of developing POAG and that the physiologic differences between men and women may be attributed to the variable effects of sex hormones on intraocular pressure (IOP), ocular blood flow, and/or neuroprotection. Estrogen, in the form of premenopausal status, pregnancy, and post-menopausal hormone therapy is associated with increase in ocular blood flow, decrease in IOP and neuroprotective properties. The vasodilation caused by estrogen and its effects on aqueous humor outflow may contribute. On the other hand, although testosterone may have known effects in the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular systems, there is no consensus as to its effects in ocular health or POAG. With better understanding of sex hormones in POAG, sex hormone-derived preventative and therapeutic considerations in disease management may provide for improved gender-specific patient care

    Rac Guanosine Triphosphatases Represent Integrating Molecular Therapeutic Targets for BCR-ABL-Induced Myeloproliferative Disease

    Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is a clonal myeloproliferative disease (MPD) initiated by expression of the p210-BCR-ABL fusion protein. We demonstrate in a murine model of p210-BCR-ABL-induced MPD that gene targeting of Rac1 and Rac2 significantly delays or abrogates disease development. Attenuation of the disease phenotype is associated with severely diminished p210-BCR-ABL-induced downstream signaling in primary hematopoietic cells. We utilize NSC23766, a small molecule antagonist of Rac activation, to validate biochemically and functionally Rac as a molecular target in both a relevant animal model and in primary human CML cells in vitro and in a xenograft model in vivo, including in Imatinib-resistant p210-BCR-ABL disease. These data demonstrate that Rac is an additional therapeutic target in p210-BCR-ABL-mediated MPD

    Do precipitation anomalies influence short-term mobility in sub-saharan Africa? An observational study from 23 countries

    Background: Precipitation anomalies are associated with a number of poor health outcomes. One potential consequence of precipitation extremes is human geographic mobility. We evaluated the associations between precipitation anomalies (droughts and heavy rains) and short-term mobility in 23 sub-Saharan African countries by linking satellite data on precipitation to cross-sectional representative surveys. Methods: Using data from 23 Demographic and Health Surveys from 2011 to 2017, we estimated the associations between deviations in long-term rainfall trends and short-term mobility among 294,539 women and 136,415 men over 15 years of age. We fit multivariable logistic regression models to assess potential non-linear relationships between rainfall deviations and short-term mobility, adjusting for survey month and socio-demographic covariates, and stratified by participant gender. Furthermore, we assessed whether these associations differed by marital status. Results: Rainfall deviations were associated with short-term mobility among women, but not men. The relationship between rainfall deviations and mobility among women was U-shaped, such that women had increased marginal probabilities of mobility in instances of both lower and heavier precipitation. Differences between married and unmarried women were also revealed: among married women, we found positive associations between both rainfall deviation extremes (drought and heavy rains) and mobility; however, among unmarried women, there was only a positive association for heavy rains. Conclusion: Precipitation anomalies were associated with short-term mobility among women, which may be in turn associated with poor health outcomes. More research with longitudinal data is needed to elaborate the associations between weather shocks, mobility, and downstream health impacts
