    Experiences with and perception of patient-reported outcome measurement in patients undergoing knee and hip replacement in Germany

    Abstract Background Patient-reported outcome measures - PROMs - have been developed to provide an assessment of patients’ physical function, symptoms, and health-related quality of life. With patient-centered care becoming increasingly important, several national strategies have been initiated for PROM measurement. However, Germany is only at the beginning of this process. The objective of this study is to assess patients’ experience with and perception of completing PROMs in patients undergoing knee and hip replacement in Germany. Methods This study used survey data from patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery in a hospital in Germany. Before surgery, patients completed a PROMs survey. After at least 6 months, patients were re-contacted to fill in a questionnaire about their experiences with and perception of the PROMs data collection. Results Most patients either agreed or totally agreed that the time to fill in the questionnaire was appropriate (89%), that the purpose of the PROMs collection was clear (85%), that the questionnaire’s content applied to their appointment (73%), and that this systematic assessment was beneficial (81%). The corresponding proportions were 54% for feeling productive while waiting and 50% for feeling that the information in the questionnaire affected the patient-doctor interaction positively. Only few significant associations were found between patient characteristics and the favorability of patients’ ratings. There were no significant differences between hip and knee replacement surgery patients regarding the favorability rating on any survey question. Conclusions The results of this study suggest that PROMs collection in the context of hip and knee replacement surgery is practicable and partly also perceived beneficial by patients. Orthopedic procedures could serve as a starting point for broader use and routine PROMs collection in Germany

    Relating the visceral factor of pain to domain‐specific risk attitudes

    Visceral factors are negative emotions and drive and feeling states that grab people's attention and motivate them to engage in certain behaviors. They can contribute to discrepancies between an individual's long-term self-interest and their actual behavior. One such discrepancy concerns risk-taking in health contexts as well as in a variety of other domains such as financial or career-related decisions. This study examines the relationship between somatic symptoms of pain and domain-specific risk attitudes in participants of a large population-based cohort study. Somatic symptoms refer to back pain; pain in arms, legs, or joints; and headache. We show that the association between pain and risk attitudes is especially robust for the financial and leisure/sports domain across different model specifications. Pain is negatively associated with willingness to take risks in both domains. When controlling for fatigue (another visceral factor), the relationship between pain and risk attitudes persists only in the financial context. However, associations between fatigue and risk attitudes emerge in the general, health, leisure/sports, and career domains. We discuss potential implications of our findings especially in light of financial decision-making

    Abstract: Paca (Cuniculus paca), one of the largest rodents of the Brazilian fauna, has inherent characteristics of its species which can conribute as a new option for animal experimantation. As there is a growing demand for suitable experimental models in audiologic and otologic surgical research, the gross anatomy and ultrastructural ear of this rodent have been analyzed and described in detail. Fifteen adult pacas from the Wild Animals Sector herd of Faculdade de CiĂȘncias AgrĂĄrias e VeterinĂĄrias, Unesp-Jaboticabal, were used in this study. After anesthesia and euthanasia, we evaluated the entire composition of the external ear, registering and ddescribing the details; the temporal region was often dissected for a better view and detailing of the tympanic bulla which was removed and opened to expose the ear structures analyzed mascroscopically and ultrastructurally. The ear pinna has a triangular and concave shape with irregular ridges and sharp apex. The external auditory canal is winding in its path to the tympanic mebrane. The tympanic bulla is is on the back-bottom of the skull. The middle ear is formed by a cavity region filled with bone and membranous structures bounded by the tympanic membrane and the oval and round windows. The tympanic membrane is flat and seals the ear canal. The anatomy of the paca ear is similar to the guinea pig and from the viewpoint of experimental model has major advantages compared with the mouse ear

    Foram estudados em 30 diafragmas de ovinos da raça Santa InĂȘs, a origem, a divisĂŁo e a distribuição dos nervos frĂȘnicos direito e esquerdo (Fde) e a participação de outros nervos na inervação do diafragma. Mediante fixação e dissecação das peças foi observado que os nervos frĂȘnicos (F) originam-se a partir dos ramos ventrais do 5Âș (C5) e 6Âș (C6) nervos espinhais cervicais (Ec) tanto Ă  direita (46,67%) como Ă  esquerda (43,33%). Os F finalizam em tronco lombocostal e ramo esternal Ă  direita (40,00%) e em ramo lombar, costal e esternal Ă  esquerda (36,68%). Os ramos lombares dos F inervam Ă  esquerda (96,67%) o pilar homolateral do diafragma e, Ă  direita (50,00%) fornecem filetes Ă  veia caudal. Os ramos costais dos F ramificam Ă  esquerda (90,00%) e Ă  direita (76,67%) as regiĂ”es dorsal e ventral da pars costalis. Os ramos esternais dos F inervam Ă  direita (100,00%) e Ă  esquerda (83,33%) a pars sternalis e a regiĂŁo ventral da pars costalis do mesmo lado. Os nervos intercostais (VIII ao XII pares, 63,33%) contribuem na inervação do diafragma de ovinos da raça Santa InĂȘs.<br>Thirty diaphragms of sheep of Santa InĂȘs breed were studied regarding their origin, division and arrangement of the right and left phrenic nerves (Fde), and the participation of other nerves in the innervation of the diaphragm. By fixing and dissecting pieces, it was found that phrenic nerves (F) frequently come from the ventral branches of the 5th (C5) and 6th (C6) cervical spinal nerves (Ec), at right (46.67%) and at left (43.33%). The F often form a lumbocostal trunk, sternal branches at right (40.00%) and lumbar, costal and esternal branches at left (36.68%). The lumbar branches of F innervate frequently at left (96.67%) the homolateral pillar of the diaphragma, and at right (50.00%) they give fillets to Vena cava caudalis. The costal branches of the F innervate at left (90.00%) and at right (76.66%) the dorsal and ventral regions of the pars costalis. The sternal branches of the F innervate at right (100.00%) and at left (83.33%) the pars sternalis and the ventral region of the pars costalis at the same side. The intercostal nerves (VII to XII pairs, 63.33%) contribute to innervate the diaphragm of Santa InĂȘs sheep

    Measurement of the lifetime and Λ separation energy of 3ΛH

    The most precise measurements to date of the 3ΛH lifetime τ and Λ separation energy BΛ are obtained using the data sample of Pb-Pb collisions at √= 5.02 TeV collected by ALICE at the LHC. The 3ΛH is reconsNN structed via its charged two-body mesonic decay channel (3ΛH→ 3He + π− and the charge-conjugate process). The measured values τ=[253±11 (stat.)±6 (syst.)] ps and BΛ=[102±63 (stat.)±67 (syst.)] keV are compatible with predictions from effective field theories and confirm that the 3ΛH structure is consistent with a weakly-bound system

    Investigation of K+K− interactions via femtoscopy in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

    Femtoscopic correlations of non-identical charged kaons (K+K−) are studied in Pb−Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon−nucleon collision sNN−−−√=2.76 TeV by ALICE at the LHC. One-dimensional K+K− correlation functions are analyzed in three centrality classes and eight intervals of particle-pair transverse momentum. The LednickĂœ and Luboshitz interaction model used in the K+K− analysis includes the final-state Coulomb interactions between kaons and the final-state interaction through a0(980) and f0(980) resonances. The mass of f0(980) and coupling were extracted from the fit to K+K− correlation functions using the femtoscopic technique for the first time. The measured mass and width of the f0(980) resonance are consistent with other published measurements. The height of the ϕ(1020) meson peak present in the K+K− correlation function rapidly decreases with increasing source radius, qualitatively in agreement with an inverse volume dependence. A phenomenological fit to this trend suggests that the ϕ(1020) meson yield is dominated by particles produced directly from the hadronization of the system. The small fraction subsequently produced by FSI could not be precisely quantified with data presented in this paper and will be assessed in future work
