Trading Wireless Information and Power Transfer: Relay Selection to Minimize the Outage Probability
This paper studies the outage probability minimization problem for a multiple
relay network with energy harvesting constraints. The relays are hybrid nodes
used for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer from the source
radio frequency (RF) signals. There is a trade-off associated with the amount
of time a relay node is used for energy and information transfer. Large
intervals of information transfer implies little time for energy harvesting
from RF signals and thus, high probability of outage events. We propose relay
selection schemes for a cooperative system with a fixed number of RF powered
relays. We address both causal and non-causal channel state information cases
at the relay--destination link and evaluate the trade-off associated with
information/power transfer in the context of minimization of outage
probability.Comment: IEEE GlobalSiP, 201

An Examination of the Structure of Sustainable Facilities Planning Scale for User Satisfaction in Nigerian Universities
Universities are under increasing pressure to demonstrate that continuous performance improvement is being delivered for user satisfaction, but the importance of facilities planning as a student-staff focused tool needs to be emphasised. This research sought answers to questions relating to the underlying structure of sustainable facilities planning and user satisfaction, and the number of factors that make up the facilities planning scale. Three universities from the south-western part of Nigeria were selected randomly using ownership structure to define the cases: University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso and Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji Arakeji, each representing the Federal, State, and Private ownership. A questionnaire survey was used on a random sample of 651 staff and students from the three universities. Six hundred questionnaires were retrieved (response rate of 92.2%). An exploratory factor analysis was used to understand the responses and the interrelationships. The results showed a two-factor solution of ‘locational advantages and user needs’ and ‘adequacy of facilities/functional connection and four core determinants for acceptance. It is concluded that universities should factor student-staff focus points into their facilities planning schemes to optimise their service deliveries. The study contributes to the discussion on factor structure of sustainable facilities planning scale with a focus on students and staff of universities. Energy Efficient Cooperation in Underlay RFID Cognitive Networks for a Water Smart Home
Shrinking water resources all over the world and increasing costs of water consumption have prompted water users and distribution companies to come up with water conserving strategies. We have proposed an energy-efficient smart water monitoring application in [1], using low power RFIDs. In the home environment, there exist many primary interferences within a room, such as cell-phones, Bluetooth devices, TV signals, cordless phones and WiFi devices. In order to reduce the interference from our proposed RFID network for these primary devices, we have proposed a cooperating underlay RFID cognitive network for our smart application on water. These underlay RFIDs should strictly adhere to the interference thresholds to work in parallel with the primary wireless devices [2]. This work is an extension of our previous ventures proposed in [2,3], and we enhanced the previous efforts by introducing a new system model and RFIDs. Our proposed scheme is mutually energy efficient and maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the RFID link, while keeping the interference levels for the primary network below a certain threshold. A closed form expression for the probability density function (pdf) of the SNR at the destination reader/writer and outage probability are derived. Analytical results are verified through simulations. It is also shown that in comparison to non-cognitive selective cooperation, this scheme performs better in the low SNR region for cognitive networks. Moreover, the hidden Markov model’s (HMM) multi-level variant hierarchical hidden Markov model (HHMM) approach is used for pattern recognition and event detection for the data received for this system [4]. Using this model, a feedback and decision algorithm is also developed. This approach has been applied to simulated water pressure data from RFID motes, which were embedded in metallic water pipes
Clinical Outcomes of physiologically-guided revascularisation
Objective: To assess the clinical outcomes of revascularisation based on fractional flow reserve (FFR) and/or instantaneous wave-free ratio (iFR).Study design: Descriptive study.Place and duration of study: Department of Medicine, The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi from January 2012 to January 2020.Methodology: A cohort of patients having moderate to severe coronary stenosis, undergoing coronary revascularisation based on invasive physiological assessment (FFR or iFR) were assessed. The participants were divided into the revascularisation-deferred group and the revascularization-performed group, based on the physiological results. Cox-proportional hazard model building was done, using a stepwise approach by assessing all plausible interactions and considering p-value ≤0.05 as statistically significant. Results: The frequency of major adverse cardiac event (MACE) and target vessel revascularisation was 8.4% and 3.2% in the revascularisation-performed group as compared to 6.4% and 3.2% in the revascularisation-deferred group. In adjusted models, no statistically significant difference was noted in MACE when comparing the revascularisation-performed group with a deferred group. Conclusion: Revascularisation guided by invasive physiological assessment with FFR or iFR is clinically safe and led to better resource utilisation. Key Words: Fractional flow reserve, Instantaneous wave-free ratio, Invasive physiological assessment, Low-middle income country
A multi-criteria framework for office tenants' preferences at office buildings
In order to mitigate the anticipated oversupply of office space, it is necessary to gauge the preference of office occupiers, namely tenants of purpose built office buildings, since these tenants form the indicator of demand for space. In this study, a multi-criteria decision making method (MCDM) – the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) procedure was employed to analyse the relative importance of the main factors chosen by the main sectors of tenants at top grade office buildings in Kuala Lumpur city centre. This study had identified the elicitation of experts’ opinion and tenants’ selection comprises twenty-six important factors for office occupation in Kuala Lumpur city centre, grouped under four main categories: Location, Lease, Building and Financial/Cost. This study then employed AHP to assess the relative importance placed on each category, revealing the varying patterns of preferences when tested on tenants from three main business sectors occupying top grade office buildings. The findings showed that, between the three sectors (Finance/Banking, ICT & Media and Oil & Gas), differences in preference were only slight for most factors but were significant for a few. The findings from this study are insightful in informing decisions on future office provision, particularly in the context of working towards satisfying office tenants’ requirements
A Simulation Platform for Evaluating RFID and WSN’s Energy Efficiencies
Advances in the wireless, RFID and sensor technologies has given rise to a plethora of diverse WSN motes that can be used in association with numerous applications. Experimenting with new MAC algorithms and various functionalities on a real sensor network to obtain energy efficiency is both time consuming and expensive especially when these different mote platforms are deployed in one application. Generally Simulators are used to approximate the performance of MAC protocols. Out of the numerous simulators available, none can simulate the energy efficiencies given different types of motes and environments in one application. Hence, the need of a simulation platform for a mix deployment of different types of WSNs and RFIDs is felt to access application performance requirements while curtailing energy consumption to enhance application lifetime. In this paper, we presents an extension of our effort EnergySim [1], which is a simulation platform developed dedicatedly for evaluating energy efficiencies. In this paper we have discussed the simulation modes, methodology and architecture of our proposed simulator with some future extensions presented at the end of the paper
