    Do less and achieve more: Training CNNs for action recognition utilizing action images from the Web

    Recently, attempts have been made to collect millions of videos to train Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models for action recognition in videos. However, curating such large-scale video datasets requires immense human labor, and training CNNs on millions of videos demands huge computational resources. In contrast, collecting action images from the Web is much easier and training on images requires much less computation. In addition, labeled web images tend to contain discriminative action poses, which highlight discriminative portions of a video’s temporal progression. Through extensive experiments, we explore the question of whether we can utilize web action images to train better CNN models for action recognition in videos. We collect 23.8K manually filtered images from the Web that depict the 101 actions in the UCF101 action video dataset. We show that by utilizing web action images along with videos in training, significant performance boosts of CNN models can be achieved. We also investigate the scalability of the process by leveraging crawled web images (unfiltered) for UCF101 and ActivityNet. Using unfiltered images we can achieve performance improvements that are on-par with using filtered images. This means we can further reduce annotation labor and easily scale-up to larger problems. We also shed light on an artifact of finetuning CNN models that reduces the effective parameters of the CNN and show that using web action images can significantly alleviate this problem.https://arxiv.org/pdf/1512.07155v1.pdfFirst author draf

    Integrated Traffic and Communication Performance Evaluation of an Intelligent Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) System for Online Travel Time Prediction

    This paper presents a framework for online highway travel time prediction using traffic measurements that are likely to be available from Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) systems, in which vehicle and infrastructure devices communicate to improve mobility and safety. In the proposed intelligent VII system, two artificial intelligence (AI) paradigms, namely Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Support Vector Regression (SVR), are used to determine future travel time based on such information as current travel time, VII-enabled vehicles’ flow and density. The development and performance evaluation of the VII-ANN and VII-SVR frameworks, in both of the traffic and communications domains, were conducted, using an integrated simulation platform, for a highway network in Greenville, South Carolina. Specifically, the simulation platform allows for implementing traffic surveillance and management methods in the traffic simulator PARAMICS, and for evaluating different communication protocols and network parameters in the communication network simulator, ns-2. The study’s findings reveal that the designed communications system was capable of supporting the travel time prediction functionality. They also demonstrate that the travel time prediction accuracy of the VII-AI framework was superior to a baseline instantaneous travel time prediction algorithm, with the VII-SVR model slightly outperforming the VII-ANN model. Moreover, the VII-AI framework was shown to be capable of performing reasonably well during non-recurrent congestion scenarios, which traditionally have challenged traffic sensor-based highway travel time prediction methods

    Ethanol-Induced Hepatic and Renal Histopathological Changes in BALB/c mice

    This study was to investigate the histopathologic changes of different concentrations of ethanol on the mice liver and kidney. Forty albino mice of the Mus musculus species, BALB/c strain mice underwent this study and were divided into four groups; control, %20, %40 and %60 of ethanol administration groups. The mice of each group (%20, %40 and %60 of ethanol) were orally administered with 1ml of ethanol 4days/week for 3 weeks. Hematoxylin and eosin staining indicated development of mild to severe lesions in kidney and liver which included; In %20 of ethanol administration group there was mild lesion development; hydropic swelling in liver and swelling of kidney parenchyma while in %40 of ethanol administration group developed moderate changes; hydropic swelling of hepatocytes and kidney tubules with hyaline degeneration and in %60 of ethanol administration group produced severe lesion; focal macro and micro abscess in liver parenchyma and focal neutrophil infiltration within renal parenchyma and hyaline cast within renal tubules. Based on our study, it can be concluded that ethanol intoxication leads to a various disorders of the liver and kidney which arrange from mild to severe injury which was depended on the concentration of ethanol.     Impact of recipient functional status on 1-year liver transplant outcomes

    BACKGROUND: The Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) scale has been widely validated for clinical practice for over 60 years.AIM: To examine the extent to which poor pre-transplant functional status, assessed using the KPS scale, is associated with increased risk of mortality and/or graft failure at 1-year post-transplantation.METHODS: This study included 38278 United States adults who underwent first, non-urgent, liver-only transplantation from 2005 to 2014 (Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients). Functional impairment/disability was categorized as severe, moderate, or none/normal. Analyses were conducted using multivariable-adjusted Cox survival regression models.RESULTS: The median age was 56 years, 31% were women, median pre-transplant Model for End-Stage for Liver Disease score was 18. Functional impairment was present in 70%; one-quarter of the sample was severely disabled. After controlling for key recipient and donor factors, moderately and severely disabled patients had a 1-year mortality rate of 1.32 [confidence interval (CI): 1.21-1.44] and 1.73 (95%CI: 1.56-1.91) compared to patients with no impairment, respectively. Subjects with moderate and severe disability also had a multivariable-adjusted 1-year graft failure rate of 1.13 (CI: 1.02-1.24) and 1.16 (CI: 1.02-1.31), respectively.CONCLUSION: Pre-transplant functional status is a useful prognostic indicator for 1-year post-transplant patient and graft survival.</p

    The rare decay B -> X_s gamma gamma is studied in the Standard Model (SM) and in two different versions (Model I and Model II) of the Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM). In the SM the branching ratio into ``hard photons'' is about 10^(-7) and can be appreciably different in the 2HDM.     Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Patients With Child-Pugh B or C Cirrhosis

    Purpose: Our purpose was to report outcomes in patients with Child-Pugh B or C (CP B/C) hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated with stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). Methods and Materials: Patients with HCC suitable for SBRT were prospectively enrolled in the study from 2012 to 2018. Outcomes in patients with CP B/C were analyzed. Cox proportional hazard models were used to compare survival outcomes between baseline CP score and post-SBRT CP score. Results: Twenty-three patients with CP B/C with a total of 29 HCC tumors were treated with SBRT. Eighty-seven percent of patients were CP B8-C10. Median tumor size was 3.1 cm (range, 1-10 cm). Median dose delivered was 40 Gy in a median of 5 fractions. Eighteen of 23 patients (78.3%) had been previously treated with transarterial chemoembolization. Median follow-up was 14.5 months. Rates of 6- and 12-month local control were 100% and 92.3%, respectively. Six- and 12-month survival rates were 73.9% and 56.5%, respectively. Median survival was 14.5 months overall and 9.2, 22.5, 14.5, and 14.4 months for patients with CP B7, B8, B9, and C10, respectively. No patients exhibited symptoms of classic radiation-induced liver disease. However, 10 patients had CP score progression, with 4 patients (17%) having a \u3e /=2-point increase in CP score by 6 months (or time of censor). There were 7 liver-related deaths, and based on independent review by a hepatologist, 1 of these deaths may have been attributable to SBRT-related liver injury. Fifteen of 23 patients were listed for liver transplant (LT) at the time of SBRT and 9 went on to receive LT with a pathologic complete response rate of 63.6%. Median survival, excluding patients who received LT, was 7.3 months. Conclusions: SBRT is a reasonable treatment option for carefully selected patients with CP B7-C10. In our small cohort, there was no detectable difference between local control or overall survival and baseline CP score

    Gene expression of IQGAPs and Ras families in an experimental mouse model for hepatocellular carcinoma: a mechanistic study of cancer progression

    IQGAPs genes play critical role in either induction or suppression of cancer and its progression, however the relationship between Ras genes and these genes are still unclear. In this study, we tried to understand the mechanistic action of IQGAPs genes and its correlation with Ras genes in mouse hepatic cancer model. The genetic expressions of IQGAP1, IQGAP2, IQGAP3, Hras, Kras, Nras, Mras, Caspase3, and BAX were followed in both hepatocellular carcinoma and normal liver cells of Balbc mice. Genotoxic agent diethylnitrosamine (DEN)-induced hepatic cancer model was induced in male mice and recorded the occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma by morphological and histological changes in the liver. It was observed that mRNA expressions of IQGAP1, Hras, Kras, Nras, Mras, Caspase3, and BAX genes were highly elevated in hepatocellular carcinoma cells when compared with normal liver cells, additionally their expressions increased by concentrating the dose of DEN. While, the expressions of IQGAP2 and IQGAP3 were significantly decreased in hepatocellular carcinoma cells when compared with normal liver cells, as well as their expressions decreased more with increasing the dose of DEN. It was concluded from this study that IQGAP1 has a strong signaling relationship with Ras genes in induction of cancer and it is considered as a key gene for induction or suppression of the hepatocellular carcinoma
