    Rapid and cost effective quantification of lignocellulosic components (cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin) of agricultural biomass (barley, canola, oat and wheat) is essential to determine the effect of various pre-treatments (such as steam explosion) on biomass used as feedstock for the biofuel industry. Fourier Transformed Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was considered as an option to achieve this objective. Regression equations having R2 values of 0.89, 0.99 and 0.98 were developed to predict the cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin compounds of biomass, respectively. The average absolute difference in predicted and measured cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin in agricultural biomass was 7.5%, 2.5%, and 3.8%, respectively

    Remdesivir use in pregnant women with severe COVID-19

    Numerous therapeutic strategies are proposed and tested for SARS CO-V2 infection. Remdesivir is researched and proposed by various societies. Studies about efficacy and safety in pregnancy are limited. A case series of 22 pregnant women effected with severe COVID disease and who received remdesivir, over a period of 1 year from May 2020 to May 2021 is presented. The 12 antenatal and 10 post-partum women were included. Demographic factors, baseline, day 3 and day 7 blood values of haemoglobin, total leukocyte count, platelets, liver enzymes, serum creatinine and D-dimers were collected. Adverse events were reported. Pregnancy complications and foetal and neonatal complications were studied. Pre-eclampsia was the most common comorbidity. The 99% of pregnant women and 100% of postpartum women recovered from COVID disease after remdesivir use. Lab investigations did not change considerably during the week of remdesivir use, suggesting its safety. Incidence of adverse events reported is 36.3%, of these 9% are serious adverse events. There are no antenatal or post-natal complications. No incidence of teratogenicity, foetal or neonatal complications. Incidence of feto-maternal transmission was 9%. Remdesivir is effective in treating severe SARS-CoV2 infection and has safety profile in pregnancy with regard to maternal and foetal effects

    Breaking Down Barriers: Examining the Accessibility of Global Water Futures Research

    The Global Water Futures program (GWF) was granted $77.8 million by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund to conduct research on the forecasting and management of water futures in Canada as part of an effort to combat projected risks associated with global climate change. The production of scientific knowledge is a clear objective of the GWF program, and the evaluation and enumeration of research outcomes is a key metric. The goal of this work is to create a comprehensive bibliographic analysis of research outputs across the full extent of the GWF program including metadata such as the title, author, publication date and geographic locations of the works. Processes to incorporate quality control, classification and validation were documented to ensure these outputs are effectively managed, monitored and evaluated. Links to the resources are also made available to ensure they are easily accessible to a wide range of audiences. Enhanced accessibility is key in sharing critical climate change research and expanding international understanding of climate-water issues. The review and evaluation of existing procedures for research output reporting provided insight to propose improved processes to increase efficiency and accuracy. By establishing a consistent organizational tool for all forms of research outputs, opportunities are created for future widespread information sharing and global collaboration. Analysis of annual reports generated by 65 projects across for main partner universities (University of Saskatchewan, University of Waterloo, McMaster University, and Wilfrid Laurier University) listed 4,708 total outputs between 2017 and 2022. Conference presentations, refereed publications, and data publications constitute most of this total, accounting for 48%, 26%, and 10% of overall outputs, respectively. Other products, including non-refereed articles, model code, and book chapters, each make up less than 3% of total GWF reported outputs. By looking at the distribution of each output type annually, we were able to examine the impact of global circumstances such as COVID-19 on total output production over a significant period. Understanding the effects of large-scale events on project development and management are critical for future adaptation in water research that will enhance research opportunities and their subsequent data findings.This research was supported by the Global Water Futures Project funded by the Canada First Excellence Research Fund (CFERF), and by the University of Waterloo Co-op program

    Environmental impact assessment of wheat straw based alkyl polyglucosides produced using novel chemical approaches

    This paper evaluates and quantifies the environmental performance of alkyl polyglucosides sourced from wheat straw (WS-APG), a low-cost and low-ecological impact agricultural residue, compared to that of their commercial counterpart, which is sourced from palm kernel oil and wheat grain (PW-APG). Escalating pressure to consider the environmental sustainability of fossil derived surfactant consumption has driven biosurfactants to become the product of choice within the surfactant market, and a class of ‘plant’ based non-ionic surfactants called alkyl polyglucosides (APG) are particularly prevalent. However, the existing food based feedstock of APG such as coconut oil, palm oil, wheat and corn (in addition to being expensive) will potentially undermine the claimed ‘sustainability’ of the APG products (i.e. the ‘food vs. chemical’ issue). Here, we present the “cradle-to-gate” life cycle impact assessment of a suggested alternative, hybridised APG synthesis technique where the Fisher glycosidation method is supplemented by novel, green chemistry based techniques. This evaluation provides a quantitative insight into direct GHG intensity and other ecological impact indicators, including land use, waste generation and energy consumption. Upon evaluation, the wheat straw-derived pathway delivered GHG-emission savings in the range of 84–98%, compared to that of the palm kernel–wheat grain pathway. Waste generated from the production of unit mass of the product amounted to 0.43 kg and 10.73 kg per kg of WS-APG and PW-APG, respectively. In addition to the above mentioned facts, the ‘cradle–gate’ stages of WS-APG production were also found to consume relatively lower amounts of water and fossil-derived energy. In conclusion, of the two APG production pathways, the suggested ‘hybrid’ pathway using an agricultural residue, wheat straw, was found to be sustainable and to demonstrate better environmental performance

    Anaesthesia and PET of the Brain

    Although drugs have been used to administer general anaesthesia for more than a century and a half, relatively little was known until recently about the molecular and cellular effects of the anaesthetic agents and the neurobiology of anaesthesia. Positron emission tomography (PET) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) studies have played a valuable role in improving this knowledge. PET studies using 11C-flumazenil binding have been used to demonstrate that the molecular action of some, but not all, of the current anaesthetic agents is mediated via the GABAA receptor. Using different tracers labelled with 18F, 11C and 15O, PET studies have shown the patterns of changes in cerebral metabolism and blood flow associated with different intravenous and volatile anaesthetic agents. Within classes of volatile agents, there are minor variations in patterns. More profound differences are found between classes of agents. Interestingly, all agents cause alterations in the blood flow and metabolism of the thalamus, providing strong support for the hypothesis that the anaesthetic agents interfere with consciousness by interfering with thalamocortical communication.</p

    Confidence and psychosis: a neuro-computational account of contingency learning disruption by NMDA blockade.

    A state of pathological uncertainty about environmental regularities might represent a key step in the pathway to psychotic illness. Early psychosis can be investigated in healthy volunteers under ketamine, an NMDA receptor antagonist. Here, we explored the effects of ketamine on contingency learning using a placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover design. During functional magnetic resonance imaging, participants performed an instrumental learning task, in which cue-outcome contingencies were probabilistic and reversed between blocks. Bayesian model comparison indicated that in such an unstable environment, reinforcement learning parameters are downregulated depending on confidence level, an adaptive mechanism that was specifically disrupted by ketamine administration. Drug effects were underpinned by altered neural activity in a fronto-parietal network, which reflected the confidence-based shift to exploitation of learned contingencies. Our findings suggest that an early characteristic of psychosis lies in a persistent doubt that undermines the stabilization of behavioral policy resulting in a failure to exploit regularities in the environment.FV was supported by the Groupe Pasteur Mutualité.     Splitting and blaming: The psychic life of neoliberal executive women

    The aim of the article is to explore the psychic life of executive women under neoliberalism using psychosocial approaches. The article shows how, despite enduring unfair treatment and access to opportunities, many executive women remain emotionally invested in upholding the neoliberal ideal that if one perseveres, one shall be successful, regardless of gender. Drawing on psychosocial approaches, we explore how the accounts given by some executive women of repudiation, as denying gender inequality, and individualization, as subjects completely agentic, are underpinned by the unconscious, intertwined processes of splitting and blaming. Women sometimes split off undesirable aspects of the workplace, which repudiates gender inequality, or blame other women, which individualizes failure and responsibility for change. We explain that splitting and blaming enable some executive women to manage the anxiety evoked from threats to the neoliberal ideal of the workplace. This article thereby makes a contribution to existing postfeminist scholarship by integrating psychosocial approaches to the study of the psychic life of neoliberal executive women, by exploring why they appear unable to engage directly with and redress instances of gender discrimination in the workplace
