<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To determine whether resveratrol, a natural plant-derived drug, has protective effects against antibody-induced apoptosis of retinal cells <it>in vitro </it>and to provide insights on the mechanism of resveratrol protection.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>E1A.NR3 retinal cells pretreated with 40 ÎŒM resveratrol were grown in the presence of anti-recoverin (Rec-1), anti-enolase (Enol-1) antibodies, and normal purified immunoglobulins. When the cells were exposed to resveratrol before treatment with Enol-1 or Rec-1 antibodies, 30–55% more cells survived compared to the resveratrol-untreated cells. Western blotting showed a reduction in proapoptotic protein Bax in the cytoplasm and mitochondria of resveratrol-treated cells. Resveratrol-pretreated cells also showed a significant decrease in intracellular calcium and an inhibition of caspase-3 activity as compared to the untreated cells. Sirt1 expression was greatly reduced in the cells grown in the presence of Rec-1 and Enol-1, but it increased about five times in the resveratrol-pretreated cells. Immunocytochemistry revealed that Sirt1 expression in the cytoplasm and nucleus was colocalized with Ku70 expression in resveratrol-treated cells, suggesting possible interaction with each other in the cell. The pattern of the Ku70 cellular localization also overlapped with the Bax cellular localization in treated and untreated cells.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p><it>In vitro </it>protection of retinal cells from apoptosis by resveratrol occurred through multiple early molecular events, such as reduction of intracellular calcium levels, down-regulation of Bax, up-regulation of Sirt1 and Ku70 activities, and inhibition of caspase-3 activity. These findings will help designing future <it>in vivo </it>and pre-clinical treatments for autoimmune retinopathies.</p

Tameness of holomorphic closure dimension in a semialgebraic set

Given a semianalytic set S in a complex space and a point p in S, there is a unique smallest complex-analytic germ at p which contains the germ of S, called the holomorphic closure of S at p. We show that if S is semialgebraic then its holomorphic closure is a Nash germ, for every p, and S admits a semialgebraic filtration by the holomorphic closure dimension. As a consequence, every semialgebraic subset of a complex vector space admits a semialgebraic stratification into CR manifolds satisfying a strong version of the condition of the frontier.Comment: Published versio

H-function extension of the NBD in the light of experimental data

    Get PDF
The recently introduced H-function extension of the Negative Binomial Distribution is investigated. The analytic form of P(n) is rederived by means of the Mellin transform. Applications of the HNBD are provided using experimental data for P(n) in e+e-, e+p, inelastic pp and non-diffractive p-pbar reactions.Comment: 8 pages REVTeX, 1 eps figure embedde

Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Curcumin-Cyclodextrins Loaded into Bacterial Cellulose-Based Hydrogels for Wound Dressing Applications.

Chronic wounds are often recalcitrant to treatment because of high microbial bioburden and the problem of microbial resistance. Silver is a broad-spectrum natural antimicrobial agent with wide applications extending to proprietary wound dressings. Recently, silver nanoparticles have attracted attention in wound management. In the current study, the green synthesis of nanoparticles was accomplished using a natural reducing agent, curcumin, which is a natural polyphenolic compound that is well-known as a wound-healing agent. The hydrophobicity of curcumin was overcome by its microencapsulation in cyclodextrins. This study demonstrates the production, characterization of silver nanoparticles using aqueous curcumin:hydroxypropyl-ÎČ-cyclodextrin complex and loading them into bacterial cellulose hydrogel with moist wound-healing properties. These silver nanoparticle-loaded bacterial cellulose hydrogels were characterized for wound-management applications. In addition to high cytocompatibility, these novel dressings exhibited antimicrobial activity against three common wound-infecting pathogenic microbes , , and

    Generalized Relativistic Meson Wave Function

We study the most general, relativistic, constituent qq‟q{\overline q} meson wave function within a new covariant framework. We find that by including a tensor wave function component, a pure valence quark model is now capable of reproducing not only all static pion data (fπf_\pi, ⟹rπ2⟩\langle r_\pi^2 \rangle) but also the distribution amplitude, form factor (Fπ(Q2))(F_\pi(Q^2)), and structure functions. Further, our generalized spin wave function provides a much better detailed description of meson properties than models using a simple relativistic extension of the S=L=0S=L=0 nonrelativistic wave function.Comment: 17 pages, REXTeX 3.0 file, (uuencoded postscript files of 8 figures appended

Hadronic sizes and observables in high-energy scattering

    Get PDF
The functional dependence of the high-energy observables of total cross section and slope parameter on the sizes of the colliding hadrons predicted by the model of the stochastic vacuum and the corresponding relations used in the geometric model of Povh and H\"ufner are confronted with the experimental data. The existence of a universal term in the expression for the slope, due purely to vacuum effects, independent of the energy and of the particular hadronic system, is investigated. Accounting for the two independent correlation functions of the QCD vacuum, we improve the simple and consistent description given by the model of the stochastic vacuum to the high-energy pp and pbar-p data, with a new determination of parameters of non-perturbative QCD. The increase of the hadronic radii with the energy accounts for the energy dependence of the observables.Comment: Latex, using Revtex.style . 2 ps figures. Charged rho meson production in neutrino-induced reactions at E_nu = 10 GeV

The neutrinoproduction of charged ρ\rho mesons on nuclei and nucleons is investigated for the first time at moderate energies (≈ \approx 10 GeV), using the date obtained with SKAT bubble chamber. No strong nuclear effects are observed in ρ+\rho^+ and ρ−\rho^- production. The fractions of charged and neutral pions originating from ρ\rho decays are obtained and compared with higher energy data. From analysis of the obtained and available data on ρ+\rho^+ and K∗+K^{*+}(892) neutrinoproduction, the strangeness suppression factor in the quark string fragmentation is extracted: λs=0.18±0.03\lambda_s = 0.18\pm0.03. Estimations are obtained for cross sections of quasiexclusive single ρ+\rho^+ and coherent ρ+\rho^+ neutrinoproduction on nuclei. The estimated coherent cross section σρ+coh\sigma_{\rho^+}^{coh} = (0.29±0.16)⋅10−38\pm0.16)\cdot 10^{-38} cm2^2 is compatible with theoretical predictions.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
