Analysis of crack propagation as an energy absorption mechanism in metal matrix composites

    Get PDF
The crack initiation and crack propagation capability was extended to the previously developed generalized plane strain, finite element micromechanics analysis. Also, an axisymmetric analysis was developed, which contains all of the general features of the plane analysis, including elastoplastic material behavior, temperature-dependent material properties, and crack propagation. These analyses were used to generate various example problems demonstrating the inelastic response of, and crack initiation and propagation in, a boron/aluminum composite

Energy absorption mechanisms during crack propagation in metal matrix composites

The stress distributions around individual fibers in a unidirectional boron/aluminum composite material subjected to axial and transverse loadings are being studied utilizing a generalized plane strain finite element analysis. This micromechanics analysis was modified to permit the analysis of longitudinal sections, and also to incorporate crack initiation and propagation. The analysis fully models the elastoplastic response of the aluminum matrix, as well as temperature dependent material properties and thermal stress effects. The micromechanics analysis modifications are described, and numerical results are given for both longitudinal and transverse models loaded into the inelastic range, to first failure. Included are initially cracked fiber models

Coulomb Gap: How a Metal Film Becomes an Insulator

Electron tunneling measurements of the density of states (DOS) in ultra-thin Be films reveal that a correlation gap mediates their insulating behavior. In films with sheet resistance R<5000ΩR<5000\Omega the correlation singularity appears as the usual perturbative ln(V)ln(V) zero bias anomaly (ZBA) in the DOS. As R is increased further, however, the ZBA grows and begins to dominate the DOS spectrum. This evolution continues until a non-perturbative ∣V∣|V| Efros-Shklovskii Coulomb gap spectrum finally emerges in the highest R films. Transport measurements of films which display this gap are well described by a universal variable range hopping law R(T)=(h/2e2)exp(To/T)1/2R(T)=(h/2e^2)exp(T_o/T)^{1/2}.Comment: 4 figure

Hot QCD equations of state and RHIC

We show how hot QCD equations of states can be adapted to make definite predictions for quark-gluon plasma at RHIC. We consider equations of state up to O(g5)O(g^5) and O[g6(ln(1/g)+δ)]O[g^6(ln(1/g)+\delta)]. Our method involves the extraction of equilibrium distribution functions for gluons and quarks from these equations of state by capturing the the interaction effects entirely in the effective chemical potentials. We further utilize these distribution functions to study the screening length in hot QCD and dissociation phenomenon of heavy quarkonia states by combining this understanding with the semi-classical transport theory.Comment: Based on poster presented during quark matter-2008(4-10 Feb 2008) Jaipur India; 4 Pages, 2 eps fig

Further experimental tests for simple relations between unpolarized and polarized quark parton distributions

Some simple relations between unpolarized and polarized quark parton distributions have direct experimental consequences which will be presented here. In particular, we will see that it is possible to relate the deep inelastic structure functions F2F_2 and g1g_1, both for proton and deuteron, in fair agreement with experimental data.Comment: 5 pages, in Latex, 3 figure
