    Heavy Quark Fragmentation to Baryons Containing Two Heavy Quarks

    We discuss the fragmentation of a heavy quark to a baryon containing two heavy quarks of mass mQΛQCDm_Q\gg\Lambda_{\rm QCD}. In this limit the heavy quarks first combine perturbatively into a compact diquark with a radius small compared to 1/ΛQCD1/\Lambda_{\rm QCD}, which interacts with the light hadronic degrees of freedom exactly as does a heavy antiquark. The subsequent evolution of this QQQQ diquark to a QQqQQq baryon is identical to the fragmentation of a heavy antiquark to a meson.     PTEN protein phosphatase activity is not required for tumour suppression in the mouse prostate

    Loss PTEN function is one of the most common events driving aggressive prostate cancers and biochemically, PTEN is a lipid phosphatase which opposes the activation of the oncogenic PI3K-AKT signalling network. However, PTEN also has additional potential mechanisms of action, including protein phosphatase activity. Using a mutant enzyme, PTEN Y138L, which selectively lacks protein phosphatase activity, we characterised genetically modified mice lacking either the full function of PTEN in the prostate gland or only lacking protein phosphatase activity. The phenotypes of mice carrying a single allele of either wild-type Pten or Pten(Y138L) in the prostate were similar, with common prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN) and similar gene expression profiles. However, the latter group, lacking PTEN protein phosphatase activity additionally showed lymphocyte infiltration around PIN and an increased immune cell gene expression signature. Prostate adenocarcinoma, elevated proliferation and AKT activation were only frequently observed when PTEN was fully deleted. We also identify a common gene expression signature of PTEN loss conserved in other studies (including Nkx3.1, Tnf and Cd44). We provide further insight into tumour development in the prostate driven by loss of PTEN function and show that PTEN protein phosphatase activity is not required for tumour suppression

    The simulation tools and processes used to generate aerothermodynamic environment definitions for the Mars 2020 entry capsule are presented. The Mars 2020 capsule leverages the heritage Mars Science Laboratory design, but the entry will follow a different trajectory, landing at a different location and altitude on Mars. The general strategy for creating the Mars 2020 mission-specific environments follows from the Mars Science Laboratory experience.     Comparison of CFD Predictions with Shuttle Global Flight Thermal Imagery and Discrete Surface Measurements

    Surface temperature measurements from the STS-119 boundary-layer transition experiment on the space shuttle orbiter Discovery provide a rare opportunity to assess turbulent CFD models at hypersonic flight conditions. This flight data was acquired by on-board thermocouples and by infrared images taken off-board by the Hypersonic Thermodynamic Infrared Measurements (HYTHIRM) team, and is suitable for hypersonic CFD turbulence assessment between Mach 6 and 14. The primary assessment is for the Baldwin-Lomax and Cebeci-Smith algebraic turbulence models in the DPLR and LAURA CFD codes, respectively. A secondary assessment is made of the Shear-Stress Transport (SST) two-equation turbulence model in the DPLR code. Based upon surface temperature comparisons at eleven thermocouple locations, the algebraic-model turbulent CFD results average 4% lower than the measurements for Mach numbers less than 11. For Mach numbers greater than 11, the algebraic-model turbulent CFD results average 5% higher than the three available thermocouple measurements. Surface temperature predictions from the two SST cases were consistently 3 4% higher than the algebraic-model results. The thermocouple temperatures exhibit a change in trend with Mach number at about Mach 11; this trend is not reflected in the CFD results. Because the temperature trends from the turbulent CFD simulations and the flight data diverge above Mach 11, extrapolation of the turbulent CFD accuracy to higher Mach numbers is not recommended

    Discriminative stimulus properties of 1.25 mg/kg clozapine in rats: Mediation by serotonin 5-HT2 and dopamine D4 receptors

    The atypical antipsychotic drug clozapine remains one of most effective treatments for schizophrenia, given a lack of extrapyramidal side effects, improvements in negative symptoms, cognitive impairment, and in symptoms in treatment-resistant schizophrenia. The adverse effects of clozapine, including agranulocytosis, make finding a safe clozapine-like a drug a goal for drug developers. The drug dis- crimination paradigm is a model of interoceptive stimulus that has been used in an effort to screen experimental drugs for clozapine-like atypical antipsychotic effects. The present study was conducted to elucidate the receptor-mediated stimulus properties that form this clozapine discriminative cue by testing selective receptor ligands in rats trained to discriminate a 1.25 mg/kg dose of clozapine from vehicle in a two choice drug discrimination task. Full substitution occurred with the 5-HT2A inverse agonist M100907 and the two preferential D4/5-HT2/α1 receptor antagonists Lu 37-114 ((S)-1-(3-(2-(4- (1H-indol-5-yl)piperazin-1-yl)ethyl)indolin-1-yl)ethan-1-one) and Lu 37-254 (1-(3-(4-(1H-indol-5-yl) piperazin-1-yl)propyl)-3,4-dihydroquinolin-2(1H)-one). Partial substitution occurred with the D4 re- ceptor antagonist Lu 38-012 and the α1 adrenoceptor antagonist prazosin. Drugs selective for 5-HT2C, 5-HT6 muscarinic, histamine H1, and benzodiazepine receptors did not substitute for clozapine. The present findings suggest that 5-HT2A inverse agonism and D4 receptor antagonism mediate the dis- criminative stimulus properties of 1.25 mg/kg clozapine in rats, and further confirm that clozapine produces a complex compound discriminative stimulus

    Disentangling Cooper-pair formation above Tc from the pseudogap state in the cuprates

    The discovery of the pseudogap in the cuprates created significant excitement amongst physicists as it was believed to be a signature of pairing, in some cases well above the room temperature. In this "pre-formed pairs" scenario, the formation of pairs without quantum phase rigidity occurs below T*. These pairs condense and develop phase coherence only below Tc. In contrast, several recent experiments reported that the pseudogap and superconducting states are characterized by two different energy scales, pointing to a scenario, where the two compete. However a number of transport, magnetic, thermodynamic and tunneling spectroscopy experiments consistently detect a signature of phase-fluctuating superconductivity above leaving open the question of whether the pseudogap is caused by pair formation or not. Here we report the discovery of a spectroscopic signature of pair formation and demonstrate that in a region of the phase diagram commonly referred to as the "pseudogap", two distinct states coexist: one that persists to an intermediate temperature Tpair and a second that extends up to T*. The first state is characterized by a doping independent scaling behavior and is due to pairing above Tc, but significantly below T*. The second state is the "proper" pseudogap - characterized by a "checker board" pattern in STM images, the absence of pair formation, and is likely linked to Mott physics of pristine CuO2 planes. Tpair has a universal value around 130-150K even for materials with very different Tc, likely setting limit on highest, attainable Tc in cuprates. The observed universal scaling behavior with respect to Tpair indicates a breakdown of the classical picture of phase fluctuations in the cuprates.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

    Recently, Neubert has suggested that a certain class of nonperturbative corrections dominates the shape of the electron spectrum in the endpoint region of semileptonic BB decay. Perturbative QCD corrections are important in the endpoint region. We study the effects of these corrections on Neubert's proposal.     The LOFAR Transients Pipeline

    Current and future astronomical survey facilities provide a remarkably rich opportunity for transient astronomy, combining unprecedented fields of view with high sensitivity and the ability to access previously unexplored wavelength regimes. This is particularly true of LOFAR, a recently-commissioned, low-frequency radio interferometer, based in the Netherlands and with stations across Europe. The identification of and response to transients is one of LOFAR's key science goals. However, the large data volumes which LOFAR produces, combined with the scientific requirement for rapid response, make automation essential. To support this, we have developed the LOFAR Transients Pipeline, or TraP. The TraP ingests multi-frequency image data from LOFAR or other instruments and searches it for transients and variables, providing automatic alerts of significant detections and populating a lightcurve database for further analysis by astronomers. Here, we discuss the scientific goals of the TraP and how it has been designed to meet them. We describe its implementation, including both the algorithms adopted to maximize performance as well as the development methodology used to ensure it is robust and reliable, particularly in the presence of artefacts typical of radio astronomy imaging.     Model independent results for BD1(2420)νˉB\to D_1(2420)\ell\bar\nu and BD2(2460)νˉB\to D_2^*(2460)\ell\bar\nu at order ΛQCD/mc,b\Lambda_{QCD}/m_{c,b}

    Exclusive semileptonic B decays into D1D_1 and D2D_2^* mesons are investigated including order ΛQCD/mc,b\Lambda_{QCD}/m_{c,b} corrections using the heavy quark effective theory. At zero recoil, the ΛQCD/mc,b\Lambda_{QCD}/m_{c,b} corrections can be written in terms of the leading Isgur-Wise function for these transitions, τ\tau, and known meson mass splittings. We obtain an almost model independent prediction for the shape of the spectrum near zero recoil, including order ΛQCD/mc,b\Lambda_{QCD}/m_{c,b} corrections. We determine τ(1)\tau(1) from the measured BD1νˉB\to D_1\ell\bar\nu branching ratio. Implications for B decay sum rules are discussed.Comment: 11 pages, revte

    The Fake IQ Test: a novel measure of self-reflection in major depressive disorder

    Background Excessive negative self-referential processing plays an important role in the development and maintenance of major depressive disorder (MDD). Current measures of self-reflection are limited to self-report questionnaires and invoking imagined states, which may not be suitable for all populations. Aims The current study aimed to pilot a new measure of self-reflection, the Fake IQ Test (FIQT). Method Participants with MDD and unaffected controls completed a behavioural (experiment 1, n = 50) and functional magnetic resonance imaging version (experiment 2, n = 35) of the FIQT. Results Behaviourally, those with MDD showed elevated negative self-comparison with others, higher self-dissatisfaction and lower perceived success on the task, compared with controls; however, FIQT scores were not related to existing self-report measures of self-reflection. In the functional magnetic resonance imaging version, greater activation in self-reflection versus control conditions was found bilaterally in the inferior frontal cortex, insula, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, motor cortex and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex. No differences in neural activation were found between participants with MDD and controls, nor were there any associations between neural activity, FIQT scores or self-report measures of self-reflection. Conclusions Our results suggest the FIQT is sensitive to affective psychopathology, but a lack of association with other measures of self-reflection may indicate that the task is measuring a different construct. Alternatively, the FIQT may measure aspects of self-reflection inaccessible to current questionnaires. Future work should explore relationships with alternative measures of self-reflection likely to be involved in perception of task performance, such as perfectionism
