    Integrable subsystem of Yang--Mills dilaton theory

    With the help of the Cho-Faddeev-Niemi-Shabanov decomposition of the SU(2) Yang-Mills field, we find an integrable subsystem of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory coupled to the dilaton. Here integrability means the existence of infinitely many symmetries and infinitely many conserved currents. Further, we construct infinitely many static solutions of this integrable subsystem. These solutions can be identified with certain limiting solutions of the full system, which have been found previously in the context of numerical investigations of the Yang-Mills dilaton theory. In addition, we derive a Bogomolny bound for the integrable subsystem and show that our static solutions are, in fact, Bogomolny solutions. This explains the linear growth of their energies with the topological charge, which has been observed previously. Finally, we discuss some generalisations.Comment: 25 pages, LaTex.     Skyrme models and nuclear matter equation of state

    We investigate the role of pressure in a class of generalised Skyrme models. We introduce pressure as the trace of the spatial part of the energy-momentum tensor and show that it obeys the usual thermodynamical relation. Then, we compute analytically the mean-field equation of state in the high and medium pressure regimes by applying topological bounds on compact domains. The equation of state is further investigated numerically for the charge one skyrmions. We identify which term in a generalised Skyrme model is responsible for which part in the equation of state. Further, we compare our findings with the corresponding results in the Walecka model

    A cost-benefit analysis of pathways to work for new and repeat incapacity benefits claimants

    This latest research forms part of a comprehensive independent evaluation of Pathways to Work. The report is based on a cost-benefit analysis conducted by a consortium of researchers from the Institute for Fiscal Studies, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and the Policy Studies Institute. It examines whether the financial benefits from Pathways are larger or smaller than its costs and the generalisability of some of the quantitative findings. The estimates of costs and benefits relate to new and repeat incapacity benefits claimants in the seven original Jobcentre Plus districts. The overall findings provide a favourable impression of the financial benefits of the Pathways to Work for new and repeat incapacity benefits claimants, for the Exchequer and hence, for society as a whole

    Two-dimensional electron gas in a modulation-doped SrTiO3/Sr(Ti,Zr)O3 heterostructure

    A two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in SrTiO3 is created via modulation doping by interfacing undoped SrTiO3 with a wider-band-gap material, SrTi1-xZrxO3, that is doped n-type with La. All layers are grown using hybrid molecular beam epitaxy. Using magnetoresistance measurements, we show that electrons are transferred into the SrTiO3, and a 2DEG is formed. In particular, Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are shown to depend only on the perpendicular magnetic field. Experimental Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are compared with calculations that assume multiple occupied subbands.Comment: Submitted to Applied Physics Letter

    Waste management in the stingless bee Melipona beecheii Bennett (Hymenoptera: Apidae)

    Waste management is important in insect societies because waste can be hazardous to adults, brood and food stores. The general organization of waste management and the influence of task partitioning, division of labor and age polyethism on waste processing were studied in three colonies of the tropical American stingless bee Melipona beecheii Bennett in Yucatån, Mexico. Waste generated in the colony (feces, old brood cells, cocoons, dead adults and brood) was collected by workers throughout the nest and taken to specific waste dumps within the nest. During the day, workers based at the waste dumps formed waste pellets, which they directly transferred in 93% of cases, to other workers who subsequently removed them from the nest. This is an example of task partitioning and is hypothesized to improve nest hygiene as has been found in leafcutting ants, Atta. To investigate division of labor and age polyethism we marked a cohort of 144 emerging workers. Workers forming waste pellets were on average 31.2±6.5 days old (±SD, N= 40, range of 18-45 days). The life span of M. beecheii workers was 49.0±14.0 days (N= 144). There was no difference in the life span of workers who formed (52.2±11.6 days, N= 40) or did not form (49.9±11.5 days, N= 97) waste pellets, suggesting that waste work did not increase mortality. Although waste was probably not hazardous to adults and brood, because the dumps are located outside the brood chamber, its presence inside the nests can attract phorid flies and predators, which can harm the colony

    All land in Ethiopia is owned by the state and granted to the people with holding right, and the land-holding arrangement is dichotomised into rural and urban systems. In-between urban and rural spaces, there is a transitional peri-urban agricultural area on which growing urbanisation has been exerting unprecedented pressure. Thus, this study mainly aims to examine and highlight the challenges and pressures imposed on the land rights of local peri-urban landholders, as a result of the growing demand for land due to urbanisation. To achieve the purpose of the study, both the desk review research approach and an analysis of previous survey research results are employed. Existing contemporary literature and theories on property rights, and current laws and policies focusing on land rights in Ethiopia are reviewed in detail. Finally, evidence shows that the new recipients of land from periurban areas, through the urban land lease system, are provided and can enjoy better and thicker bundles of land rights than the indigenous, local, peri-urban landholders in the process of urban development.Keywords: Ethiopia; landholder; leaseholder; peri-urban; property rights; urbanisatio

    Exclusive Radiative Decays of Upsilon in SCET

    We study exclusive radiative decays of the ΄\Upsilon using soft-collinear effective theory and non-relativistic QCD. In contrast to inclusive radiative decays at the endpoint we find that color-octet contributions are power suppressed in exclusive decays, and can safely be neglected, greatly simplifying the analysis. We determine the complete set of Lorentz structures that can appear in the SCET Wilson coefficients and match onto them using results from a previous calculation. We run these coefficients from the scale \mups to the scale Λ∌1GeV\Lambda \sim 1 \textrm{GeV}, thereby summing large logarithms. Finally we use our results to predict the ratio of branching fractions B(΄→γf2)/B(J/Ïˆâ†’Îłf2)B(\Upsilon \to \gamma f_2)/B(J/\psi \to \gamma f_2), B(J/Ïˆâ†’Îłf2)/B(ψâ€Č→γf2)B(J/\psi \to \gamma f_2)/B(\psi' \to \gamma f_2), and the partial rate for Î„â†’ÎłÏ€Ï€\Upsilon \to \gamma \pi \pi.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures.
