Update on the Fishes of Texas Project
Poster presentation presented at the 2017 Texas Academy of Sciences annual meeting in Belton, Texas on March 4, 2017.The Fishes of Texas project (www.fishesoftexas.org), originating in 2006, remains the most reliable (quality
controlled) and data rich site for acquiring occurrence data for Texas fishes, holding over 124,000 records from
42 institutions. Among many discoveries, the project is responsible for detecting at least 3 freshwater species
not previously known from the state. We continue making improvements, but substantial updates so far have
been onerous for our developers for various reasons. A recent major update reduces coding redundancies,
points the website to a new massively restructured and more fully normalized PostgreSQL database (was
MySQL), and places the code in a versioning environment. These changes have little immediate effect on user
experience, but will greatly accelerate development. PostgreSQL allows for complex spatial queries which will
allow users to quickly map occurrence data alongside many more political/environmental layers than currently
possible. While our database/web designers have been implementing these changes and fixing bugs etc.,
we’ve been preparing resources for them to integrate into the website. Some highlights to expect: 1 new
updates to the state Species of Greatest Concern list; 2 expert opinion-determined nativity spatial layers for
all freshwater fishes displaying in our new mapping system; 3 dynamic statistical summaries; 4 new data types
from the literature (>14,900 records), citizen science (>4,300), anglers (>37,000), and agency databases
(>1,000,000); 5 new museum records, many derived from our gap sampling (~19,000, 4 museums); 6 more
specimen examinations (>400) and photographs (1000); 7 document archive with “smart” text search tools

Using the Fishes of Texas Project Databases and Recent Collections to Detect Range Expansions by Four Fish Species on the Lower Coastal Plain of Texas
The Fishes of Texas project online database is a large, freely available quality controlled fish occurrence database of museum vouchered specimens. We used data from it, the same project’s separate database of occurrences extracted from published literature and our own recent survey data to examine range stability for four fish species inhabiting the Texas Lower Coastal Plain: Fundulus chrysotus, Fundulus jenkinsi, Heterandria formosa and Poecilia formosa. A weakness of our data is that they consist of presences only and species absences can only rarely be inferred. To help adjust for this we used common widespread species as proxies for the four target species by using captures of these proxy species as indicators that the collecting methods used were appropriate to capture the target species, assuming then that large numbers of occurrences of the proxies with contemporaneous absence of the target species in the same samples supports inferences of probable absence of target species. We here report new and previously unpublished occurrences for these species and document westward range expansions for H. formosa and F. chrysotus, an eastward range expansion for P. formosa, and a pattern of possible range contraction and expansion for F. jenkinsi

Verification of Identifications of Cyprinid Specimens from the Colorado River Basin, Texas
Numerous published reports indicate that records of occurrence of Sharpnose Shiner, Notropis oxyrhynchus, in the Colorado River basin of Texas are the result of an introduction, though the species is clearly native in the adjacent Brazos River basin. We discovered previously mis-identified specimens of N. oxyrhynchus that extend the record of presence of the species in the Colorado basin much further back in time than previous authors realized, and conclude that the species was almost certainly native there. However, lack of the species in any of the many collections made in the basin over the last half century indicates a low probability that it still persists there.U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Arlington, Texas. Sensitivity and specificity of detection methods for erythropoietin doping in cyclists
Recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) is used as doping a substance. Anti-doping efforts include urine and blood testing and monitoring the athlete biological passport (ABP). As data on the performance of these methods are incomplete, this study aimed to evaluate the performance of two common urine assays and the ABP. In a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial, 48 trained cyclists received a mean dose of 6000 IU rHuEPO (epoetin beta) or placebo by weekly injection for eight weeks. Seven timed urine and blood samples were collected per subject. Urine samples were analyzed by sarcosyl-PAGE and isoelectric focusing methods in the accredited DoCoLab in Ghent. A selection of samples, including any with false presumptive findings, underwent a second sarcosyl-PAGE confirmation analysis. Hematological parameters were used to construct a module similar to the ABP and analyzed by two evaluators from an Athlete Passport Management Unit. Sensitivity of the sarcosyl-PAGE and isoelectric focusing assays for the detection of erythropoietin abuse were 63.8% and 58.6%, respectively, with a false presumptive finding rate of 4.3% and 6%. None of the false presumptive findings tested positive in the confirmation analysis. Sensitivity was highest between 2 and 6 days after dosing, and dropped rapidly outside this window. Sensitivity of the ABP was 91.3%. Specificity of the urine assays was high; however, the detection window of rHuEPO was narrow, leading to questionable sensitivity. The ABP, integrating longitudinal data, is more sensitive, but there are still subjects that evade detection. Combining these methods might improve performance, but will not resolve all observed shortcomings
A Smirnov-Bickel-Rosenblatt theorem for compactly-supported wavelets
In nonparametric statistical problems, we wish to find an estimator of an
unknown function f. We can split its error into bias and variance terms;
Smirnov, Bickel and Rosenblatt have shown that, for a histogram or kernel
estimate, the supremum norm of the variance term is asymptotically distributed
as a Gumbel random variable. In the following, we prove a version of this
result for estimators using compactly-supported wavelets, a popular tool in
nonparametric statistics. Our result relies on an assumption on the nature of
the wavelet, which must be verified by provably-good numerical approximations.
We verify our assumption for Daubechies wavelets and symlets, with N = 6, ...,
20 vanishing moments; larger values of N, and other wavelet bases, are easily
checked, and we conjecture that our assumption holds also in those cases

American Eel in Texas – what we do, don’t, and need to, know
Copy of the oral presentation made by the first author to the January 2016 meeting of the Texas Chapter of American Fisheries Society in Kerrville, Texas. Data mapped in the presentation are also included in kml format (Google Earth).American Eel is undoubtedly one of the most studied freshwater fishes of North America. Many recent discoveries have added new insights that re-write important aspects of the “text book” knowledge of the species’ complex life history in ways that could have significant impacts on management. Despite all of this new information, debate about the species’ conservation status continues, and new threats, such as continued habitat loss and major clandestine fisheries driven by extremely high value in the global market, have further complicated management. Though USFWS recently decided that the species does not merit listing as “Endangered,” in 2012 Canada changed that country’s assessment of the species’ status from “Special Concern” (since 2006) to “Threatened” and IUCN upped its classification in 2013 to “Endangered.” Ontario has considered it “Endangered” since 2007. All U.S. Atlantic states vowed to work together to produce, in 1999, the American Eel Benchmark Stock Assessment, which mandated each state conduct standardized monitoring of recruitment and later, mandatory catch and effort monitoring. Given all that activity and data generation, it is remarkable that still so little is known about the populations of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) and its tributary rivers that making any management decisions in that large, neglected part of the species’ range is virtually impossible. The Fishes of Texas Project team has been collating and improving the limited and scattered data on occurrences of the species in the region and concludes it important to promote a broad scale (Gulf of Mexico) collaborative community effort to acquire and share data and carefully curated specimens and, hopefully, develop a GOM-wide collaborative research and management plan like that implemented by Atlantic states. Interpreting OPERA results on superluminal neutrino
OPERA has claimed the discovery of superluminal propagation of neutrinos. We
analyze the consistency of this claim with previous tests of special
relativity. We find that reconciling the OPERA measurement with information
from SN1987a and from neutrino oscillations requires stringent conditions. The
superluminal limit velocity of neutrinos must be nearly flavor independent,
must decrease steeply in the low-energy domain, and its energy dependence must
depart from a simple power law. We construct illustrative models that satisfy
these conditions, by introducing Lorentz violation in a sector with light
sterile neutrinos. We point out that, quite generically, electroweak quantum
corrections transfer the information of superluminal neutrino properties into
Lorentz violations in the electron and muon sector, in apparent conflict with

Kinetic Heterogeneities in a Highly Supercooled Liquid
We study a highly supercooled two-dimensional fluid mixture via molecular
dynamics simulation. We follow bond breakage events among particle pairs, which
occur on the scale of the relaxation time . Large scale
heterogeneities analogous to the critical fluctuations in Ising systems are
found in the spatial distribution of bonds which are broken in a time interval
with a width of order . The structure factor of the broken
bond density is well approximated by the Ornstein-Zernike form. The correlation
length is of order at the lowest temperature studied,
being the particle size. The weakly bonded regions thus identified evolve in
