Dendritic Surfactants Show Evidence for Frustrated Intercalation: A New Organoclay Morphology
Mixing a smectite clay with some dendritic surfactants shows that despite the large size of some of these molecules, a property that frustrates complete intercalation into the gallery of the clay, organoclay materials are obtained. X-ray powder diffraction (XPD) reveals no significant increases in lattice spacing as these surfactants are added. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) show that interlayer water is preserved. Consistent with an undisturbed interlayer, the amount of organic material in organoclays derived from frustrated surfactants does not exceed 15% of the cationic exchange capacity (CEC) of the composite. Smaller dendritic surfactants do not display frustrated intercalation and instead readily enter into the gallery of the smectic clay yielding traditional organoclay materials. A range of organic compositions (5-50% w/w) that exceed the CEC of the materials are observed. The organic content is corroborated by UV spectroscopy and TGA. XPD reveals increasing lattice spacings with increasing organic content. IR spectroscopy and TGA support an increasingly hydrophobic interlayer. A linear isomer of a frustrated surfactant can intercalate into the gallery (5-33% w/w) yielding morphologies that depend on the amount of surfactant added. These results support the hypothesis that shape, and not only size, is important for producing frustrated intercalation
Factors of staff turnover in textile businesses in Colombia
The Colombian textile sector, which represents 3% of the gross domestic product, has staff turnover problems. When a worker quits, an immediate replacement is needed in order to not affect productivity. Companies often recruit people without training or even experience. In this paper is analyses job turnover of businesses in the textile sector in Barranquilla (Colombia) through internal, external and contextual factors with their respective indicators. The investigation is quantitative with a correlational scope and a cross-sectional design. The methodology consisted of reliability testing (Cronbach’s alpha and McDonald’s omega) and construct validity (exploratory factor analysis) for the measurement instrument. This was followed by a descriptive analysis, with measures in relation to central tendency and dispersion for each factor indicator, concluding a confirmatory factor analysis with maximum likelihood estimates to observe causality, covariation and incidence relationships. The results established that the relevant indicators are commitment and satisfaction, sickness and company flexibility. The strongest covariance is between internal and contextual factors. Consistent with the theory, it was possible to statistically validate the theoretical model applied and a tool to measure job turnover
Maternal depressive symptoms, maternal asthma, and asthma in school-aged children
BACKGROUND: Little is known about the joint effects of maternal asthma and maternal depression on childhood asthma.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether maternal depression and maternal asthma lead to greater risk of childhood asthma than maternal asthma alone.
METHODS: Cross-sectional studies of children (6-14 years old) in San Juan, Puerto Rico (n = 655) and Sweden (n = 6,887) were conducted. In Puerto Rico, maternal depressive symptoms were defined using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) questionnaire. In Sweden, maternal physician-diagnosed depression was derived from national registries, and maternal depressive symptoms were defined using an abbreviated CES-D questionnaire. Childhood asthma was defined as physician-diagnosed asthma plus current wheeze (in Puerto Rico) or plus medication use (in Sweden). Logistic regression was used for multivariable analysis.
RESULTS: Compared with Puerto Rican children whose mothers had neither asthma nor depressive symptoms, those whose mothers had asthma but no depressive symptoms had 3.2 times increased odds of asthma (95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.1-4.8) and those whose mothers had asthma and depressive symptoms had 6.5 times increased odds of asthma (95% CI = 3.3-13.0). Similar results were obtained for maternal depression and maternal asthma in the Swedish cohort (odds ratio for maternal asthma without maternal depression = 2.8, 95% CI = 2.1-3.7; odds ratio for maternal asthma and maternal depression = 4.0, 95% CI = 1.7-9.6). Although the estimated effect of maternal asthma on childhood asthma was increased when maternal depressive symptoms (Puerto Rico) or maternal depression (Sweden) was present, there were no statistically significant additive interactions.

Moonlighting Proteins Hal3 and Vhs3 Form a Heteromeric PPCDC with Ykl088w in Yeast CoA Biosynthesis
Premi a l'excel·lència investigadora. 2010Unlike most other organisms, the essential five-step Coenzyme A biosynthetic pathway has not been fully resolved in yeast. Specifically, the gene(s) encoding the phosphopantothenoylcysteine decarboxylase (PPCDC) activity still remains unidentified. Sequence homology analyses suggest three candidates, namely Ykl088w, Hal3 and Vhs3, as putative PPCDC enzymes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Interestingly, Hal3 and Vhs3 have been characterized as negative regulatory subunits of the Ppz1 protein phosphatase. Here we show that YKL088w does not encode a third Ppz1 regulatory subunit, and that the essential roles of Ykl088w and the Hal3/Vhs3 pair are complementary, cannot be interchanged and can be attributed to PPCDC-related functions. We demonstrate that while known eukaryotic PPCDCs are homotrimers, the active yeast enzyme is a heterotrimer which consists of Ykl088w and Hal3/Vhs3 monomers that separately provides two essential catalytic residues. Our results unveil Hal3/Vhs3 as moonlighting proteins, involved in both CoA biosynthesis and protein phosphatase regulation
Canagliflozin and renal outcomes in type 2 diabetes and nephropathy
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the leading cause of kidney failure worldwide, but few effective long-term treatments are available. In cardiovascular trials of inhibitors of sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2), exploratory results have suggested that such drugs may improve renal outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS In this double-blind, randomized trial, we assigned patients with type 2 diabetes and albuminuric chronic kidney disease to receive canagliflozin, an oral SGLT2 inhibitor, at a dose of 100 mg daily or placebo. All the patients had an estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of 30 to <90 ml per minute per 1.73 m2 of body-surface area and albuminuria (ratio of albumin [mg] to creatinine [g], >300 to 5000) and were treated with renin–angiotensin system blockade. The primary outcome was a composite of end-stage kidney disease (dialysis, transplantation, or a sustained estimated GFR of <15 ml per minute per 1.73 m2), a doubling of the serum creatinine level, or death from renal or cardiovascular causes. Prespecified secondary outcomes were tested hierarchically. RESULTS The trial was stopped early after a planned interim analysis on the recommendation of the data and safety monitoring committee. At that time, 4401 patients had undergone randomization, with a median follow-up of 2.62 years. The relative risk of the primary outcome was 30% lower in the canagliflozin group than in the placebo group, with event rates of 43.2 and 61.2 per 1000 patient-years, respectively (hazard ratio, 0.70; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.59 to 0.82; P=0.00001). The relative risk of the renal-specific composite of end-stage kidney disease, a doubling of the creatinine level, or death from renal causes was lower by 34% (hazard ratio, 0.66; 95% CI, 0.53 to 0.81; P<0.001), and the relative risk of end-stage kidney disease was lower by 32% (hazard ratio, 0.68; 95% CI, 0.54 to 0.86; P=0.002). The canagliflozin group also had a lower risk of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke (hazard ratio, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.67 to 0.95; P=0.01) and hospitalization for heart failure (hazard ratio, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.47 to 0.80; P<0.001). There were no significant differences in rates of amputation or fracture. CONCLUSIONS In patients with type 2 diabetes and kidney disease, the risk of kidney failure and cardiovascular events was lower in the canagliflozin group than in the placebo group at a median follow-up of 2.62 years

El Congreso ofreció un espacio para la presentación, difusión e intercambio de importantes investigaciones nacionales e internacionales ante la comunidad universitaria que se dio cita en el encuentro. El uso de herramientas tecnológicas para la gestión de los trabajos de investigación como la plataforma Open Conference Systems y la web de presentación del Congreso http://citis.blog.ups.edu.ec/, hicieron de CITIS 2017 un verdadero referente entre los congresos que se desarrollaron en el país.
La preocupación de nuestra Universidad, de presentar espacios que ayuden a generar nuevos y mejores cambios en la dimensión humana y social de nuestro entorno, hace que se persiga en cada edición del evento la presentación de trabajos con calidad creciente en cuanto a su producción científica.

Larvicidal Activity of Hemp Extracts and Cannabidiol against the Yellow Fever Mosquito <i>Aedes aegypti</i>
To mitigate pyrethroid resistance in mosquito vectors of emerging and re-emerging human pathogens, there is an urgent need to discover insecticides with novel modes of action. Natural alternatives, such as extracts derived from plants, may serve as substitutes for traditional synthetic insecticides if they prove to be sustainable, cost-effective, and safe for non-target organisms. Hemp (Cannabis sativa) is a sustainable plant known to produce various secondary metabolites with insecticidal properties, including terpenoids and flavonoids. The goal of this study was to assess the larvicidal activity of hemp leaf extract on mosquito larvae from both pyrethroid-susceptible (PS) and pyrethroid-resistant (PR) strains of Aedes aegypti. Another goal was to identify which components of the extract were responsible for any observed larvicidal activity. We found that a methanol extract of hemp leaves induced similar concentration-dependent larvicidal activity against PS (LC50: 4.4 ppm) and PR (LC50: 4.3 ppm) strains within 48 h. Partitioning of the leaf extract between methanol and hexane fractions revealed that full larvicidal activity was restricted to the methanol fraction. Analysis of this fraction by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance showed it to be dominated by cannabidiol (CBD). Larvicidal assays using authentic CBD confirmed this compound was primarily responsible for the toxicity of the hemp leaf extract against both strains. We conclude that hemp leaf extracts and CBD have the potential to serve as viable sources for the development of novel mosquito larvicides
Socioeconomic status, diet, and recurrent severe asthma exacerbations in Puerto Rican youth
Background: Why Puerto Rican youths have higher rates of severe asthma exacerbations (SAEs) than their non-Hispanic White peers is unclear. Objective: We aimed to identify risk factors associated with recurrent SAEs in Puerto Rican youths with asthma. Methods: We performed cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of recurrent SAEs in 209 Puerto Rican youths with asthma who participated in 2 cross-sectional studies approximately 5.2 years apart: the Puerto Rico Genetics of Asthma and Lifestyle study (visit 1, participants aged 6-14 years) and the Epigenetic Variation and Childhood Asthma in Puerto Ricans study (visit 2, participants aged 9-20 years). Recurrent SAEs were defined as at least 2 SAEs in the previous year. Results: Of the youths in our study, there were 80 (38.3%) and 47 (22.4%) with recurrent SAEs at visit 1 and visit 2, respectively, and 31 participants (14.8%) had persistent recurrent SAEs (ie, recurrent SAEs at both visits). In multivariable analyses, low household income was significantly associated with 2.4 to 12.3 times increased odds of recurrent SAEs in all analyses, with stronger longitudinal associations. Low parental education level, nonprivate or employer-based health insurance, overweight or obesity, residential proximity to a major road, and low or moderate level of outdoor activity were each significantly associated with recurrent SAEs in at least 1 analysis. Further, persistence of low parental numeracy level, low household income, and an unhealthy diet were each associated with persistent recurrent SAEs. Conclusion: In this study of Puerto Rican youths with asthma, persistence of low parental numeracy level, a low household income, and an unhealthy diet were associated with persistent recurrent SAEs. Our findings support policies promoting equity and healthy lifestyles for Puerto Rican children and their families
