Nonlinear shock acceleration beyond the Bohm limit
We suggest a physical mechanism whereby the acceleration time of cosmic rays
by shock waves can be significantly reduced. This creates the possibility of
particle acceleration beyond the knee energy at ~10^15eV. The acceleration
results from a nonlinear modification of the flow ahead of the shock supported
by particles already accelerated to the knee momentum at p ~ p_*. The particles
gain energy by bouncing off converging magnetic irregularities frozen into the
flow in the shock precursor and not so much by re-crossing the shock itself.
The acceleration rate is thus determined by the gradient of the flow velocity
and turns out to be formally independent of the particle mean free path
(m.f.p.). The velocity gradient is, in turn, set by the knee-particles at p ~
p_* as having the dominant contribution to the CR pressure. Since it is
independent of the m.f.p., the acceleration rate of particles above the knee
does not decrease with energy, unlike in the linear acceleration regime. The
reason for the knee formation at p ~ p_* is that particles with are
effectively confined to the shock precursor only while they are within limited
domains in the momentum space, while other particles fall into
``loss-islands'', similar to the ``loss-cone'' of magnetic traps. This
structure of the momentum space is due to the character of the scattering
magnetic irregularities. They are formed by a train of shock waves that
naturally emerge from unstably growing and steepening magnetosonic waves or as
a result of acoustic instability of the CR precursor. These losses steepen the
spectrum above the knee, which also prevents the shock width from increasing

Filaments in the southern giant lobe of Centaurus A : Constraints on nature and origin from modelling and GMRT observations
Date of acceptance: 22/05/2014We present results from imaging of the radio filaments in the southern giant lobe of CentaurusA using data from Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope observations at 325 and 235 MHz, and outcomes from filament modelling. The observations reveal a rich filamentary structure, largely matching the morphology at 1.4 GHz. We find no clear connection of the filaments to the jet. We seek to constrain the nature and origin of the vertex and vortex filaments associated with the lobe and their role in high-energy particle acceleration. We deduce that these filaments are at most mildly overpressuredwith respect to the global lobe plasma showing no evidence of largescale efficient Fermi I-type particle acceleration, and persist for ~2-3 Myr. We demonstrate that the dwarf galaxy KK 196 (AM 1318-444) cannot account for the features, and that surface plasma instabilities, the internal sausage mode and radiative instabilities are highly unlikely. An internal tearing instability and the kink mode are allowed within the observational and growth time constraints and could develop in parallel on different physical scales. We interpret the origin of the vertex and vortex filaments in terms of weak shocks from transonic magnetohydrodynamical turbulence or from a moderately recent jet activity of the parent AGN, or an interplay of both.Peer reviewe
Fluxes and distribution of dissolved iron in the eastern (sub-) tropical North Atlantic Ocean
Aeolian dust transport from the Saharan/Sahel desert regions is considered the dominant external input of iron (Fe) to the surface waters of the eastern (sub-) tropical North Atlantic Ocean. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the sources of dissolved Fe (DFe) and quantified DFe fluxes to the surface ocean in this region. In winter 2008, surface water DFe concentrations varied between <0.1 nM and 0.37 nM, with an average of 0.13 ± 0.07 nM DFe (n = 194). A strong correlation between mixed layer averaged concentrations of dissolved aluminum (DAl), a proxy for dust input, and DFe indicated dust as a source of DFe to the surface ocean. The importance of Aeolian nutrient input was further confirmed by an increase of 0.1 nM DFe and 0.05 ?M phosphate during a repeat transect before and after a dust event. An exponential decrease of DFe with increasing distance from the African continent, suggested that continental shelf waters were a source of DFe to the northern part of our study area. Relatively high Fe:C ratios of up to 3 à 10?5 (C derived from apparent oxygen utilization (AOU)) indicated an external source of Fe to these African continental shelf waters. Below the wind mixed layer along 12°N, enhanced DFe concentrations (>1.5 nM) correlated positively with apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) and showed the importance of organic matter remineralization as an DFe source. As a consequence, vertical diffusive mixing formed an important Fe flux to the surface ocean in this region, even surpassing that of a major dust event
Gamma-rays from Galactic Black Hole Candidates with Stochastic Particle Acceleration
We consider stochastic particle acceleration in plasmas around stellar mass
black holes to explain the emissions above 1 MeV from Galactic black hole
candidates. We show that for certain parameter regimes, electrons can overcome
Coulomb losses and be accelerated beyond the thermal distribution to form a new
population, whose distribution is broad and usually not a power law; the peak
energy of the distribution is determined by the balance between acceleration
and cooling, with particles piling up around it. Radiation by inverse Compton
scattering off the thermal (from background) and non-thermal (produced by
acceleration) particles can in principle explain the hard X-ray to gamma-ray
emissions from black hole candidates. We present model fits of Cyg X-1 and GRO
J0422 in 50 keV -- 5 MeV region observed with OSSE and COMPTEL.Comment: 2 figures, to appear in March 20 of ApJ
Distribution and redox speciation of dissolved iron on the European continental margin
To investigate the biogeochemistry of iron in the waters of the European continental margin, we determined the dissolved iron distribution and redox speciation in filtered (<0.2 ÎŒm) open-ocean and shelf waters. Depth profiles were sampled over the shelf slope southeast of the Chapelle Bank area (47.61°N, 4.24°W to 46.00°N, 8.01°W) and a horizontal surface-water transect over the shelf and through the English Channel (la Manche) and the southern North Sea (46°N, 8°W to 52°N, 4°E). An abrupt trace-metal front was found near the shelf slope, indicated by a horizontal gradient of dissolved iron (DFe) and aluminium (DAl), which correlated with changing salinities (r2 = 0.572 and 0.528, respectively, n = 92). Labile Fe(II) concentrations varied from <12 pmol L-1 in North Atlantic surface waters to >200 pmol L-1 in the near bottom waters of the shelf break. Labile Fe(II) accounted for âŒ5 of the dissolved iron species in surface shelf waters (mean 5.0 ± 2.7), whereas higher Fe(II) fractions (i.e., >8) were observed near the sea bottom on the shelf break and during a midday solar maximum in surface waters in the vicinity of the Scheldt river plume. Benthic processes (resuspension and diagenesis) constituted important sources of Fe(II) and DFe in this region, and photoreduction of Fe(III) species in shelf waters caused enhanced labile Fe(II) concentrations. Analysis of International Social Survey Program (ISSP) data collected in 18 Western countries in 1998 demonstrates that Christian desires for a public role of religion are strongest in countries where Christian religiosity is numerically most marginal. Moreover, Dutch data covering the period 1970-1996 confirm that the decline of the number of Christians in the Netherlands has been coincided by a strengthening of the call for public religion among the remaining faithful and by increased polarization about this with the nonreligious. Religious decline and religious privatization, two of the most crucial dimensions of secularization (Casanova 1994), hence develop dialectically: as the number of Christians declines, the remaining faithful seem increasingly unwilling to accept the " secularist truce" -the secularist contract that guarantees religious freedom yet bans religion from the public sphere by relegating it to the private realm
