More specic, we introduce the concept of right reproductive Hv-semigroup which seems to be a useful tool to study the noise pollution problem in urban areas

    Body like an idol: K-pop fitspiration on Tumblr – an analysis of texts and images

    Eating disorders are a major health issue in societies today which oftentimes remain untreated. In social media, such as Tumblr, people build communities to exchange information and connect to each other using specific hashtags. Some of these trends which emerge around these hashtags, are related to eating disorders. This study in information science addresses how inspiration for fitness (Fitspiration) inspired by music fandom (in particular K-pop) can be characterized on Tumblr by automatically analyzing text and images of posts. Images are evaluated based on their colorfulness and emotional measures, texts undergo a sentiment and readability analysis, as well as an evaluation of their psycho-linguistic features. Furthermore, a qualitative content analysis of K-pop Fitspiration posts (n=119) is performed and they are compared to the K-pop Thinspiration posts, regular Thinspiration and control group posts. Results reveal, that K-pop Fitspiration posts are oftentimes more similar to posts from the control group than to Thinspiration posts, but that they also share psycho-linguistic features with posts of eating disordered users

    Organotin(IV) Derivatives of L-Cysteine and their in vitro Anti-Tumor Properties

    The synthesis and characterization of the organotin compounds [(n-C4H9)2Sn(cys)] (1), [(C6H5)2Sn(cys)] (2), [(C6H5)3Sn(Hcys).(H2o)] (3), {[(CH3)2Sn(Kcys)2].2(H20)} (4), {[(n-C4H9)2Sn(Kcys)2].2(H20)} (5) and {[(C6H5)2Sn(Kcys)2].2(H20)} (6) (where H2cys = L-cysteine) are reported. The compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis and 1H-NMR, Uv-Vis, FT-IR and MOssbauer spectroscopic techniques. Attempted recrystallization of (2) in DMSO/methanol 2:1 solution yielded after several days unexpectedly the dimeric compound bis(tri-phenyltin)sulphide {[(C6H5)3Sn]2S} (7) which has been characterized by x-ray analysis. The structure of the parent complex (2) as well as the mechanism of the decomposition of cysteine are being further investigated.     Turkish aid agencies in Somalia: risks and opportunities for building peace

    Turkey has become a more visible global actor over the past decade. Its growing aid budget, which made it the world’s third largest humanitarian donor in 2013, has increasingly been focused on conflict-affected states. Since 2011, through the deployment of high numbers of aid workers to Mogadishu, the Turkish government and Turkish non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have markedly expanded aid operations in Somalia. Through a joint research project with Istanbul Policy Center (IPC) conducted in 2014, Saferworld has sought to explore Turkish aid to Somalia and understand what the implications might be for peace and stability in Somalia. Described by Somali stakeholders as tangible, visible and of high impact, aid from Turkey has been broadly welcomed. Nonetheless, as the experience of other international donors over the past two decades has shown, aid can have unintended effects for peace and conflict in Somalia. Alongside providing an overview of Turkey-Somalia relations, the research has identified the ways in which aid from Turkish agencies has been at risk of unintentionally fuelling conflict dynamics. Recommendations have been identified for how both official and civil society aid agencies can address these risks and capitalise on existing opportunities to contribute to lasting peace in Somalia. The research also includes a specific set of recommendations for policymakers seeking to further develop the Turkish government’s foreign policy concept of humanitarian diplomacy

    Spatio-Temporal Distribution of Ceratothripoides claratris (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) on Tomatoes in Thailand

    Ceratothripoides claratris Shumsher is one of the most important thrips pest of tomatoes in central Thailand. Hence we conducted studies to determine the intra- and inter-plant distribution of C. claratris on tomatoes in two types of greenhouses, i.e., open-plastic and closed net house. The experiments were conducted on the campus of the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand. Both adults and larvae of C. claratris showed foliage-biased distribution. Sex ratios of adult C. claratris did not significantly differ on flowers and leaves, whereas on fruits males significantly outnumbered females. On flowers, no diurnal periodicity of occurrence of C. claratris was detected. Generally, thrips infestation commenced in the lower parts of the tomato plants and gradually spread to the higher strata of the plants. Depending on the greenhouse type and the stem system thrips infestation differed significantly over time in the lower but not in the uppermost strata of the plants. In the net house, infestations of C. claratris commenced one week after planting of the tomato seedlings. Soon after the peak in infestations, thrips numbers dramatically decreased. Estimates of Taylor’s power showed that C. claratris had an aggregated distribution pattern on the foliage of tomato plants. The importance of these findings for future monitoring programs of C. claratris infestations on tomatoes is discussed

    Iron in the Sargasso Sea (Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study region) during summer : eolian imprint, spatiotemporal variability, and ecological implications

Our data reveal a large seasonal change in the dissolved iron (dFe) concentration of surface waters in the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study region, from ∼1–2 nM in summer 2003, when aerosol iron concentrations were high (mean 10 nmol m−3), to ∼0.1–0.2 nM in spring 2004, when aerosol iron concentrations were low (mean 0.64 nmol m−3). During summer 2003, we observed an increase of ∼0.6 nM in surface water dFe concentrations over 13 days, presumably due to eolian iron input; an estimate of total iron deposition over this same period suggests an effective solubility of 3–30% for aerosol iron. Our summer 2003 water column profiles show potentially growth-limiting dFe concentrations (0.02–0.19 nM) coinciding with a deep chlorophyll maximum at 100–150 m depth, where phytoplankton biomass is typically dominated by Prochlorococcus during late summer.Funding for this work was provided by the U.S. National Science Foundation (OCE-0222053 to P.     Low pH immobilizes and kills human leukocytes and prevents transmission of cell-associated HIV in a mouse model

    BACKGROUND: Both cell-associated and cell-free HIV virions are present in semen and cervical secretions of HIV-infected individuals. Thus, topical microbicides may need to inactivate both cell-associated and cell-free HIV to prevent sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS. To determine if the mild acidity of the healthy vagina and acid buffering microbicides would prevent transmission by HIV-infected leukocytes, we measured the effect of pH on leukocyte motility, viability and intracellular pH and tested the ability of an acidic buffering microbicide (BufferGel(®)) to prevent the transmission of cell-associated HIV in a HuPBL-SCID mouse model. METHODS: Human lymphocyte, monocyte, and macrophage motilities were measured as a function of time and pH using various acidifying agents. Lymphocyte and macrophage motilities were measured using video microscopy. Monocyte motility was measured using video microscopy and chemotactic chambers. Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) viability and intracellular pH were determined as a function of time and pH using fluorescent dyes. HuPBL-SCID mice were pretreated with BufferGel, saline, or a control gel and challenged with HIV-1-infected human PBMCs. RESULTS: Progressive motility was completely abolished in all cell types between pH 5.5 and 6.0. Concomitantly, at and below pH 5.5, the intracellular pH of PBMCs dropped precipitously to match the extracellular medium and did not recover. After acidification with hydrochloric acid to pH 4.5 for 60 min, although completely immotile, 58% of PBMCs excluded ethidium homodimer-1 (dead-cell dye). In contrast, when acidified to this pH with BufferGel, a microbicide designed to maintain vaginal acidity in the presence of semen, only 4% excluded dye at 10 min and none excluded dye after 30 min. BufferGel significantly reduced transmission of HIV-1 in HuPBL-SCID mice (1 of 12 infected) compared to saline (12 of 12 infected) and a control gel (5 of 7 infected). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that physiologic or microbicide-induced acid immobilization and killing of infected white blood cells may be effective in preventing sexual transmission of cell-associated HIV
