    Acorn crop, seed size and chemical defenses determine the performance of specialized insect predators and reproductive output in a Mediterranean oak

    Seed predation is an antagonistic interaction that negatively affects the performance of individual plants and can limit plant population dynamics. In animal-dispersed plants, crop size is an important determinant of plant reproductive success through its effect on seed dispersers and predators. Seed traits, such as size or chemical composition, can also increase the tolerance to seed predators or reduce their performance. We investigated the interaction between Quercus faginea and two specialized pre-dispersal insect seed predators (weevils and moths) during two years of contrasting crop size to determine the consequences of oak reproductive investment on seed production and insect performance. Crop size was 44% lower and acorns were 32% smaller in the second year, although acorn predation by insects was proportionally similar between both years at the population level. Individual trees producing larger crops showed a lower incidence of insect predators during the year of abundant acorn production, whereas trees producing bigger acorns experienced higher seed predation rates by insects, and acorns held more insect larvae in the low crop year. Competition between insects increased when acorn production was low, and higher tannin content in acorns further constrained the number of weevil larvae developing together in the same acorn. However, the abundance and size of insect larvae produced per tree were similar between the two crop years, and this was due to larvae often depleting acorn reserves when resources were low. Oak reproductive output increased nearly two-fold during the large crop year. Crop size variation, acorn production in a given year and acorn size and chemical composition seem to be important traits for reducing damage by insect predators in Quercus faginea and improve oak reproductive success

    Ants indirectly reduce the reproductive performance of a leafless shrub by benefiting aphids through predator deterrence

    Ant–aphid mutualisms can generate cas- cade effects on the host plants, but these impacts depend on the ecological context. We studied the consequences of ant–aphid interactions on the repro- ductive performance of a Mediterranean leafless shrub (Retama sphaerocarpa), through direct and indirect effects on the arthropod community. By manipulating the presence of ants and aphids in the field, we found that ants increased aphid abundance and their persis- tence on the plant and reduced aphid predators by nearly half. However, the presence of ants did not affect the abundance of other plant herbivores, which were relatively scarce in the studied plants. Aphids, and particularly those tended by ants, had a negative impact on the plant reproductive performance by significantly reducing the number of fruits produced. However, fruit and seed traits were not changed by the presence of aphids or those tended by ants. We show that ants favoured aphids by protecting them from their natural enemies but did not indirectly benefit plants through herbivory suppression, resulting in a net negative impact on the plant reproductive perfor- mance. Our study suggests that the benefits obtained by plants from hosting ant–aphid mutualisms are dependent on the arthropod community and plant traits

    Apolipoprotein CIII Reduction Protects White Adipose Tissues against Obesity-Induced Inflammation and Insulin Resistance in Mice

    Apolipoprotein CIII (apoCIII) is proinflammatory and increases in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity and insulin resistance. We have previously shown that reducing apoCIII improves insulin sensitivity in vivo by complex mechanisms involving liver and brown adipose tissue. In this study the focus was on subcutaneous (SAT) and visceral (VAT) white adipose tissue (WAT). Mice were either given HFD for 14 weeks and directly from start also treated with antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) against apoCIII or given HFD for 10 weeks and HFD+ASO for an additional 14 weeks. Both groups had animals treated with inactive (Scr) ASO as controls and in parallel chow-fed mice were injected with saline. Preventing an increase or lowering apoCIII in the HFD-fed mice decreased adipocytes’ size, reduced expression of inflammatory cytokines and increased expression of genes related to thermogenesis and beiging. Isolated adipocytes from both VAT and SAT from the ASO-treated mice had normal insulin-induced inhibition of lipolysis compared to cells from Scr-treated mice. In conclusion, the HFD-induced metabolic derangements in WATs can be prevented and reversed by lowering apoCIII

    Estimación de la carga de rotura en probetas entalladas de aluminio AL7075-T651 mediante el uso del concepto del material equivalente combinado con el criterio de la densidad de energía de deformación

    El principal objetivo de este artículo es la aplicación del criterio de la Densidad de Energía de Deformación (SED), combinado con el Concepto de Material Equivalente (EMC) para predecir la carga de rotura de probetas CT de la aleación de aluminio Al7075-T651 que contienen entallas en U. Con este propósito, se han realizado 24 ensayos de fractura combinando 6 radios de entalla diferente, que cubren desde probetas fisuradas (0 mm) hasta probetas de 2 mm de radio de entalla. Las probetas fisuradas se han empleado para obtener las propiedades de fractura del material y el resto de los ensayos, se han usado para comprobar y comparar la carga de fractura obtenida experimentalmente con las predicciones que devuelven los métodos mencionados anteriormente: SED, SED-EMC. Los resultados teóricos de las predicciones de la carga de rotura para el material imaginario obtenido mediante el empleo del EMC, concuerdan con los resultados experimentales derivados de las muestras reales

    Atypical chemokine receptor 1 on nucleated erythroid cells regulates hematopoiesis

    Healthy individuals of African ancestry have neutropenia that has been linked with the variant rs2814778(G) of the gene encoding atypical chemokine receptor 1 (ACKR1). This polymorphism selectively abolishes the expression of ACKR1 in erythroid cells, causing a Duffy-negative phenotype. Here we describe an unexpected fundamental role for ACKR1 in hematopoiesis and provide the mechanism that links its absence with neutropenia. Nucleated erythroid cells had high expression of ACKR1, which facilitated their direct contact with hematopoietic stem cells. The absence of erythroid ACKR1 altered mouse hematopoiesis including stem and progenitor cells, which ultimately gave rise to phenotypically distinct neutrophils that readily left the circulation, causing neutropenia. Individuals with a Duffy-negative phenotype developed a distinct profile of neutrophil effector molecules that closely reflected the one observed in the ACKR1-deficient mice. Thus, alternative physiological patterns of hematopoiesis and bone marrow cell outputs depend on the expression of ACKR1 in the erythroid lineage, findings with major implications for the selection advantages that have resulted in the paramount fixation of the ACKR1 rs2814778(G) polymorphism in Africa

    Comparación de métodos para el seguimiento de las poblaciones de comadreja Mustela nivalis en ambientes agrícolas

    La comadreja Mustela nivalis es un pequeño carnívoro especializado en el consumo de micromamíferos. En la Península Ibérica hay muy poca información sobre esta especie, siendo especialmente interesante el estudio de su papel en la regulación de la dinámica poblacional de los micromamíferos. Algunas especies alcanzan eventualmente elevadas densidades en ambientes agrícolas, generando notable alarma social ya que pueden mermar significativamente la producción agrícola. Cualquier estudio de esta naturaleza requiere de métodos efectivos de seguimiento a largo plazo de las poblaciones de este mustélido. En este trabajo evaluamos la eficacia y eficiencia de cuatro metodologías para detectar comadrejas en ambientes agrarios: captura en vivo, trampas de huellas, trampas de pelo y cámaras-trampa. El estudio se desarrolló en dos localidades agrícolas de la meseta Castellano-Leonesa. Se hicieron dos muestreos por localidad, en otoño y primavera de 2016/2017. En cada localidad seleccionamos 10 lindes de ~400 m de longitud, donde se instalaron de forma alterna y equidistante: 6 trampas de captura, 2 trampas de huellas, 2 trampas de pelos y 1 cámara-trampa, que estuvieron activos entre 9-10 días. Se usó carne de pollo y topillo Microtus arvalis como cebo. Se detectó la presencia de comadrejas con alguna de las metodologías en el 38% de las lindes muestreadas (ocupación estimada), con un total de 29 detecciones (13 otoño/16 primavera). El trampeo en vivo detectó la presencia en el 80% de las lindes positivas, las trampas de huella en el 33%, las cámaras-trampa en el 20% y las trampas de pelo en el 6%. La ocupación estimada estuvo relacionada positivamente con las tasas de detección (detecciones/100 trampas-día) del trampeo en vivo y de las trampas de huellas pero no con las de cámaras-trampa y trampas de pelo. Al tener en cuenta el esfuerzo (trampas-día), las trampas de pelo fueron el método menos eficiente para detectar comadrejas. Estos resultados indican que, con esfuerzos similares, las trampas de huellas y las cámaras-trampa pueden ser tan eficaces como el trampeo en vivo para detectar comadrejas en ambientes agrícolas con condiciones similares a las de nuestro estudio.Universidad de Málaga.
