    Get PDF

Aim: Explore and define the nurses’ role in detection and reporting of adverse drug reactions (ADR). Method: A narrative review was carried out through a bibliographic research in the following databases: PubMed, Cinahl and Scielo; in the Cochrane Library repository, and in the metasearcher Google Scholar. Outcomes: 29 articles were selected, which were divided into three subparts: ADR reporting by healthcare professionals, tools and instruments used by nurses, and characteristics and other data related to the aim of the study. Results were examined, such as nurses’ reporting percentage, the quality of these reports and the nurses’ self-reported knowledge on the pharmacovigilance system in different countries. In addition, other data were collected, such as the tools developed for nurses’ usage, their validity and the outcomes of their implementation; the feelings reported by nurses related to the development of their role as reporters; their conducts and self-reported barriers to accomplish their new responsibilities, and studies with educational interventions involved. Discussion: Nurses are a in a privileged position to detect and report ADR. Nevertheless, there is a lack of knowledge on pharmacovigilance and general pharmacology that must be dealt with if nurses are to secure their role in the pharmacovigilance clinical team at hospitals. Studies seem to support the idea that continuous training is the key to do so

Hunting “Big Fish”: A marine environmental history of a contested fishery in the Bohol Sea

The Bohol Sea in the Philippines has a high biodiversity of large marine vertebrates. It is also one of the primary fishing grounds in the Central Visayas. This is a study of the history of interactions of the fishers of the Bohol Sea with the ‘big fishes’ living within it. These ‘big fishes’ are the large marine vertebrates, namely whales, dolphins, whale sharks and manta rays. It is the story of the changes in the Bohol Sea and how the communities who depended on it affected these changes. Similarly, it discusses how the Bohol Sea and the large marine vertebrates shaped the lives of the coastal peoples living around it. This study aims to determine the extent of the fisheries for whales, dolphins, whale sharks and manta rays in the Bohol Sea from the 19th century to recent times. It focuses on the fishing communities of southern Bohol, Camiguin and Southern Leyte in the Central Visayas, who are known to hunt these large marine vertebrates, and aims to describe the characteristics and trace the evolution of these fisheries. Through a multidisciplinary approach, this study uses a combination of ethnographic and historical research methods, together with biological data, from published and unpublished sources. The study aims to determine if the abundance and distribution of large marine vertebrates in the Bohol Sea changed in the long-term. It also examines how the fishing communities adapted to the ecological, socio-economic and political changes over time. From its beginnings in the late nineteenth century, the hunting of whales, dolphins, whale sharks and manta rays, in the different communities around the Bohol Sea underwent very similar and, for some, identical technological developments. These fishing technologies and patterns were adapted to the nature of their target species. By the late twentieth century, with increasing population, worsening economic conditions, and declining fish stocks in the country, the Bohol Sea fishing communities’ dependence on the fisheries for large marine vertebrates also increased. Likewise, fishery policies and legislative frameworks were also evolving with a more protectionist and conservationist stance. The implementation of fishery bans in the 1990s compelled most fishers to comply and adapt, however others resisted. Communities who lived in an environment endowed with more diverse and abundant resources proved to be more resilient. While those who heavily depended on the fishery and had little else to turn to have continued to hunt up to the present day. Despite continuing protests and public clamour for a total ban on hunting for all other species of rays in the Philippines, the ray fishery in the Bohol Sea continues. This study demonstrates how state efforts to conserve whales, dolphins, whale sharks and manta rays in the Philippines have been ineffective. This is primarily because of the lack of legitimacy of these fishery policies in the eyes of the communities. This study also highlights the importance of using multiple and non-traditional data sources in evaluating fisheries that are data deficient. The study shows how it is important to examine the historical context of ecological and social systems in order to understand the causes of contemporary resource management problems

Opportunistic Navigation with Iridium Next LEO Satellites

    Get PDF
The concept of opportunistic navigation arises from the future demands that autonomous vehicles will require in order to navigate in a reliable and accurate way in GNSS-challenged environments. Specifically, GNSS signals are not robust enough against intentional jamming attacks and they are unencrypted, making them accessible by hackers and completely spoofable. Some alternatives that have been identified as timely sources of positioning are signals of opportunity, which cluster a broad spectrum including broadband LEO (Low Earth Orbits) satellite signals, AM/FM radio signals, Wi-Fi signals and even cellular LTE/4G signals, and which can be exploited for navigation although they were not transmitted for this purpose. Particularly, LEO satellite signals have inherent attributes that make them even more desirable for opportunistic navigation. First, their received signal power is around 30dB higher than GNSS signals since they are located approximately twenty times closer to the Earth’s surface. Second, they will be abundant in the following years since private companies are planning to aggregately launch thousands of broadband Internet satellites into LEO. Third, they will be diverse in frequency and direction since each broadband provider will deploy its satellites into unique constellations. Unfortunately, there are several challenges with using LEO satellite signals for navigation as it is discussed throughout this document. For instance, there is a need of having specifically designed receivers that can extract navigation observables from LEO satellites and, furthermore, the internal clocks of LEO satellites are not as precisely synchronized as GNSS satellite clocks, requiring the receiver to account for extra timing shifts. In this way, the present thesis addresses the problem of navigating opportunistically with Iridium Next LEO satellite signals by proposing a complete receiver architecture that allows to make Doppler measurements to satellite signals in order to obtain a PNT (Positioning, Navigation and Timing) solution.Outgoin

The use of The Simpsons as a proposal for the study of interculturality in English as a Foreign Language (EFL)

    Get PDF
When we speak of interculturality, the first thing that comes to our minds is culture and tradition. Today, intercultural communication competence is essential in the classroom for teaching English as a Foreign Language, as we live in an increasingly pluralistic and globalized world. In the words of Beacco et al. (2016) the “plurilingual and intercultural competence is the ability to use a plural repertoire of linguistic and cultural resources to meet communication needs or interact with other people and enrich that repertoire while doing so.” (p. 23). Studying a foreign language without this competence would be meaningless, as language and culture would not exist without each other. In this Master’s Final Project, the aim is to bring students closer to this competence through The Simpsons, as it is a youthful television phenomenon that has been appearing on our home televisions for over 30 years. To this end, the teaching unit will be designed under the guidelines of the task-based approach and the Total Physical Response (TPR) method, whose main objectives will be cooperative work based on the completion of various tasks that will also seek the motivation and interest in learning of the students. In other words, the aim is to use authentic material with the support of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and gamification to promote the motivation of pupils in the process of teaching-learning the foreign language.
