Ser moda. Apuntes sobre los modos de afirmarse en el mundo o en el mercado de las identidades

    Get PDF
In this paper the meaning of «being fashion» and of «being fashionable» is analyzed. This expressions are related to the concepts «being» and «appearance», to the natural behavior of «the one that is» and the artificiality of «the one that creates» a social identity. The author uses sociologist Georg Simmel’s theory to analyze the role of fashion in modern society. He describes the characteristics and contradictions of fashion such as creating social membership and differentiating the subject within the group

Fatigue failure of welded connections at orthotropic bridges

Orthotropic decks were applied to the long span bridges after World War II due to several advantages, such as light weight, high strength, few deck joints, durability, rapid construction, life-cycle economy. The fatigue problem of orthotropic decks was realized twenty years ago since fatigue failure was found. In the past two decades large amount of studies and investigations were carried out and fruitful achievements were obtained. It was found that most of the fatigue cracks were occurred at the welded connection details, such as rib-to-deck plate, rib-to-diaphragm, and rib-to-diaphragm-to-deck plate (RDDP). These connections are sensitive to fatigue cracking due to high concentrated stress and residual stress at welded connections. In this paper practical fatigue failure cases at the welded connections, ease to occur fatigue cracking, are presented, and analyzed through a numerical modeling of orthotropic deck via FE (finite element) software. Furthermore, the improvement technologies of fatigue are also discussed. The results of the analysis can be contributed to the evaluation of the fatigue design for the orthotropic deck

Prenatal hyperandrogenism induces alterations that affect liver lipid metabolism

    Get PDF
Prenatal hyperandrogenism is hypothesized as one of the main factors contributing to26 the development of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS patients have high risk27 of developing fatty liver and steatosis. This study aimed to evaluate the role of prenatal28 hyperandrogenism in liver lipid metabolism and fatty liver development. Pregnant rats29 were hyperandrogenized with testosterone. At pubertal age, the prenatally30 hyperandrogenized (PH) female offspring displayed both ovulatory (PHov) and31 anovulatory (PHanov) phenotypes that mimic human PCOS features. We evaluated32 hepatic transferases, liver lipid content, the balance between lipogenesis and fatty acid33 oxidation pathway, oxidant/antioxidant balance and pro-inflammatory status. We also34 evaluated the general metabolic status through growth rate curve, basal glucose and35 insulin levels, glucose tolerance test, HOMA-IR index and serum lipid profile.36 Although neither PH group showed signs of liver lipid content, the lipogenesis and fatty37 oxidation pathways were altered. The PH groups also showed impaired38 oxidant/antioxidant balance, a decrease in the pro-inflammatory pathway (measured by39 prostaglandin E2 and cyclooxygenase-2 levels), decreased glucose tolerance, imbalance40 of circulating lipids and increased risk of metabolic syndrome. We conclude that41 prenatal hyperandrogenism generates both PHov and PHanov phenotypes with signs of42 liver alterations, imbalance in lipid metabolism and increased risk of developing43 metabolic syndrome. The anovulatory phenotype showed more alterations in liver44 lipogenesis and a more impaired balance of insulin and glucose metabolism, being more45 susceptible to the development of steatosis.Fil: Abruzzese, Giselle Adriana. Orchestration at the beginning: mitosis in sea urchin embryo

    Get PDF
Development of multicellular organisms is driven by a series of mitotic divisions after fertilization. Total cytoplasmic volume does not increase during this process, resulting in an increasing number of smaller daughter cells. Cell divisions are initially synchronous in an early embryo, but this ends at the 16-cell stage in the sea urchin. Orchesterated mitosis does, however, continue in subpopulations via the coordination of two different processes: karyokinesis and cytokinesis. Part of this asynchrony is due to the differentiation of lineages.Fil: Abruzzese, Giselle Adriana. University of Chicago; Estados Unidos. The author begins this essay by dedicating an extensive analysis to the 1971 film by director Richard C. Sarafian Punto Zero (Vanishing Point), highlighting the implications it attributes to travel and the peculiarity that the man-machine relationship takes on within it. The second part of the essay is dedicated to travel as a "western invention", highlighting its multiple dimensions and finally relating it to the transformations that new technologies and new media are imposing on our perception of space and time

    Transcreación, intertextualidad y etnopoética

In this essay I speak of two artworks, that are located at the intersection between transcreation and ethnopoetics. I understand these resources as means to generate a proposal that allows the creation of a new territory or zone of contact between contemporary art and indigenous cultures, where dialogical and participatory relationships between contemporary art and the ontological knowledge of our cultures can be explored. &nbsp

Extracellular Citrate is a Trojan Horse for Cancer Cells

    Get PDF
The first intermediate in the mitochondrial tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle is citrate, which is essential and acts as a metabolic regulator for glycolysis, TCA cycle, gluconeogenesis, and fatty acid synthesis. Within the cytosol, citrate is cleaved by ATP citrate lyase (ACLY) into oxaloacetate (OAA) and acetyl-CoA; OAA can be used for neoglucogenesis or in the TCA cycle, while acetyl-CoA is the precursor of some biosynthetic processes, including the synthesis of fatty acids. Accumulating evidence suggests that citrate is involved in numerous physiological and pathophysiological processes such as inflammation, insulin secretion, neurological disorders, and cancer. Considering the crucial role of citrate to supply the acetyl-CoA pool for fatty acid synthesis and histone acetylation in tumors, in this study we evaluated the effect of citrate added to the growth medium on lipid deposition and histone H4 acetylation in hepatoma cells (HepG2). At low concentration, citrate increased both histone H4 acetylation and lipid deposition; at high concentration, citrate inhibited both, thus suggesting a crucial role of acetyl-CoA availability, which prompted us to investigate the effect of citrate on ACLY. In HepG2 cells, the expression of ACLY is correlated with histone acetylation, which, in turn, depends on citrate concentration. A decrease in H4 acetylation was also observed when citrate was added at a high concentration to immortalized human hepatic cells, whereas ACLY expression was unaffected, indicating a lack of control by histone acetylation. Considering the strong demand for acetyl-CoA but not for OAA in tumor cells, the exogenous citrate would behave like a trojan horse that carries OAA inside the cells and reduces ACLY expression and cellular metabolism. In addition, this study confirmed the already reported dual role of citrate both as a promoter of cell proliferation (at lower concentrations) and as an anticancer agent (at higher concentrations), providing useful tips on the use of citrate for the treatment of tumors
