    Understanding the formation of deep eutectic solvents: betaine as a universal hydrogen bond acceptor

    © 2020 Wiley-VCH GmbH The mechanism of formation of betaine-based deep eutectic solvents (DES) is presented for the first time. Due to its polarity unbalance, it was found that betaine displays strong negative deviations from ideality when mixed with a variety of different organic substances. These results pave the way for a comprehensive design of novel deep eutectic solvents.     Tuberculosis inequalities and socio-economic deprivation in Portugal

    OBJECTIVE: To analyse the geographical distribution of tuberculosis (TB) in Portugal and estimate the association between TB and socio-economic deprivation. METHODS: An ecological study at the municipality level using TB notifications for 2010–2014 was conducted. Spatial Bayesian models were used to calculate smoothed standardised notification rates, identify high- and low-risk areas and estimate the association between TB notification and the European Deprivation Index (EDI) for Portugal and its component variables. RESULTS: Standardised notification rates ranged from 4.41 to 76.44 notifications per 100 000 population. Forty-one high-risk and 156 low-risk municipalities were identified. There was no statistically significant association between TB notification rate and the EDI, but some of its variables, such as the proportion of manual workers and the percentage unemployed, were significantly and directly associated with TB notification, whereas the variable ‘proportion of residents with low education level' showed an inverse relationship. CONCLUSION: Wide inequalities in TB notification rates were observed, and some areas continued to exhibit high TB notification rates.     Laboratory and Field Studies on Herpetosoma Trypanosomes From Portugal

    Several small mammals were trapped in the Arrabida region (Portugal) and checked for the presence of trypanosomes which were found in 33 of the 197 (11.1 %) Mus spretus and in 9 of the 29 (31 %) Crocidura russula observed. To our knowledge, this was the first time that trypanosomes were isolated from these mammals species. In the liver of one dead C. russula was observed different parasite forms. The studies of infectivity to experimental rodents, analyses of the DNA buoyant density and the isoenzymatic profiles, show that trypanosomes isolates from M. spretus were identical to Trypanosoma musculi isolates from Mus musculus. However the isolates from C. russula, although related to the isolates from murine rodents, were clearly separated from these and close to Trypanosoma microti. These findings may allow further studies on the detection of their vectors and on the study of trypanosome reproduction.publishersversionpublishe

    Solid-liquid phase behavior of eutectic solvents containing sugar alcohols

    Mixtures of carbohydrates are often reported in the literature as deep eutectic solvents yet, in most cases, their solid–liquid phase diagrams are poorly characterized and no evidence is available to validate this classification. In this work, the phase diagrams of the binary systems composed of the sugar alcohols mannitol or maltitol and meso-erythritol, xylitol, or sorbitol, were experimentally determined. The results obtained reveal that these systems have a thermodynamic ideal behavior, questioning their classification as deep eutectic solvents and showing that intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the components of a mixture is not a sufficient condition to prepare deep eutectic solvents. The phase diagrams of the systems composed of mannitol or maltitol and cholinium chloride were also measured in this work. In sharp contrast to the mixtures composed solely by sugar alcohols, and unlike numerous other choline-based eutectic systems reported in the literature, these systems revealed significant deviations to thermodynamic ideality, leading to significant melting temperature depressions.     Hypophosphatemic Rickets: A New Mutation

    Introduction: Phosphopenic rickets is characterized by hypophosphatemia with hyperphosphaturia, normal calcemia and normal or mildly elevated PTH. This pathology may be caused by mutations in PHEX gene (phosphate regulating endopeptidase homolog X-linked). We present a clinical report of a girl with phosphopenic rickets, as consequence of a new mutation of PHEX gene. Clinical Case: We present a 4-year-old female, with unremarkable family history, who presented with failure to thrive since the first year of life (height at the 5th centile, and with the age of four below 5th centile). Blood tests showed hypophosphatemia (2.4 mg/dL), elevated alkaline phosphatase (495 U/L), normal calcemia, mildly elevated PTH (97.2 pg/mL; RR <68.3) and normal levels of 25(OH)D and 1.25(OH)D vitamins. The radiological study showed bone deformity of the radius and femur. Diagnosis of hypophosphatemic rickets was made and she was medicated with phosphorus and calcitriol. Currently, the patient has no clinical or radiographic signs of rickets, osseous age is according to real age and there was a considerable increase in growth rate (between 25th and 50th centiles). Renal ultrasound shows incipient signs of nephrocalcinosis since she was 9-year-old. The genetic study detected a heterozigous mutation of the PHEX gene: variant c.767_768del (p.Thr256Serfs*7). This variant is not described in the literature or databases. However, since it introduces a premature stop codon that can produce a truncated protein, this is very likely a pathogenic variant. The parent’s genetic study is still in progress. Conclusions: Presently more than 200 mutations in the PHEX gene have been found to cause hypophosphatemic rickets.     Can cholinium chloride form eutectic solvents with organic chloride-based salts?

    The high melting point of a large number of organic salts with potential ionic liquid-like properties, hinders their applicability as solvents. Considering the success of cholinium chloride on lowering the melting temperature of several substances and its success on forming deep eutectic solvents, this work studies its mixing with organic chlorides to lower their melting points producing eutectic ionic liquids. The solid-liquid phase diagrams for binary mixtures composed of cholinium chloride and ten organic halides were experimentally measured. Surprisingly, cholinium chloride presented, for all these systems, significant positive deviations from ideal liquid behaviour that restricted its ability to lower the melting points of these mixtures. Only for mixtures with ammonium chloride, tetramethylammonium chloride, bis(2-hydroxyethyl)dimethylammonium chloride or cholinium bromide was cholinium chloride able to significantly lower the melting point of the mixture, but without reaching values close to room temperature (298 K). For a better understanding of the results obtained, the solid-liquid phase diagrams of four alkylammonium chloride-based mixtures were experimentally assessed and used to show that these compounds are better than cholinium chloride at inducing negative deviations from ideality, leading to greater melting point depressions.This work was developed in the scope of the project CICECO e Aveiro Institute of Materials, POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007679 (Ref. In the thymol-menthol system, an abnormal strong interaction was identified stemming from the acidity difference of the phenolic and aliphatic hydroxyl groups.     Experimental solubility and density studies on aqueous solutions ofquaternary ammonium halides, and thermodynamic modelling formelting enthalpy estimations

    Aiming to extend the yet limited knowledge on phase equilibria and physical-chemical properties of quaternaryalkylammonium halides and their aqueous binary systems, the solubilities of ten salts in water were measured inthis work in the temperature range between 293.2 K and 348.2 K along with their densities. The PC-SAFT equa-tion of state was thenapplied in the description of density as well as water activity coefficients data. The model-ling results describe very satisfactorily the experimental data, and the non-associating parameters follow well-defined trends with the molecular weight of the alkylammonium halides. These parameters were applied inthe prediction of the solubility data with unsatisfactory results, with mole fraction average absolute deviation(AAD= 0.018), deteriorating with increasing alkyl chain length.However, refitting thebinaryinteraction param-eter a much better description is obtained (AAD = 0.0045). COSMO-RS was also applied for the solubility predic-tion (AAD = 0.025), with poorer results for the chloride salts. After, the melting enthalpies of the quaternaryalkylammonium halides were estimated using the PC-SAFT equation, which in spite of their uncertainty, are pos-sibly the best option to perform solid-liquid equilibrium analysis of utmost importance when designing andscreening new deep eutectic mixtures based on these compounds.publishe

    The role of charge transfer in the formation of type i deep eutectic solvent-analogous ionic liquid mixtures

    It was recently shown that tetramethylammonium chloride presented negative deviations to ideality when mixed with tetraethylammonium chloride or tetrapropylammonium chloride, leading to a strong decrease of the melting points of these salt mixtures, in a behavior akin to that observed in the formation of deep eutectic solvents. To better rationalize this unexpected melting point depression between two structurally similar compounds devoid of dominant hydrogen bonding capability, new solid–liquid equilibria data for tetramethylammonium-based systems were measured and analyzed in this work. Molecular dynamics was used to show that the strong negative deviations from ideality presented by these systems arise from a synergetic share of the chloride ions. A transfer of chloride ions seems to occur from the bigger cation in the mixture (which possesses a more disperse charge) to the smaller cation (tetramethylammonium), resembling the formation of metal–chloride complexes in type I deep eutectic solvents. This rearrangement of the charged species leads to an energetic stabilization of both components in the mixture, inducing the negative deviations to the ideality observed.
