Closed-loop controlled combustion is a promising technique to improve the overall performance of internal combustion engines and Diesel engines in particular. In order for this technique to be implemented some form of feedback from the combustion process is required. The feedback signal is processed and from it combustionrelated parameters are computed. These parameters are then fed to a control process which drives a series of outputs (e.g. injection timing in Diesel engines) to control their values. This paper’s focus lies on the processing and computation that is needed on the feedback signal before this is ready to be fed to the control process as well as on the electronics necessary to support it. A number of feedback alternatives are briefly discussed and for one of them, the in-cylinder pressure sensor, the CA50 (crank angle in which the integrated heat release curve reaches its 50% value) and the IMEP (Indicated Mean Effective Pressure) are identified as two potential control variables. The hardware architecture of a system capable of calculating both of them on-line is proposed and necessary feasibility size and speed considerations are made by implementing critical blocks in VHDL targeting a flash-based Actel ProASIC3 automotive-grade FPGA

An Integrated Statistical Investigation of Internal Carotid Arteries of Patients Affected by Cerebral Aneurysms

Cerebral aneurysm formation is the result of a complex interplay of systemic and local factors. Among the latter, the role of the geometry of the vessel hosting an aneurysm, of the upstream vasculature and the induced hemodynamics still need to be carefully investigated. In this paper we combine computational fluid dynamics analysis and morphological characterization and carry out the statistical investigation of the features of the internal carotid artery (ICA) of 52 patients affected by a cerebral aneurysm. The functional principal component analysis performed on the geometric and fluid dynamics features of the patients reveals correlations with the location of the aneurysm in the cerebral circulation and its rupture status. This allows a clustering of the patients that is anticipated to contribute to the design of an index for the rupture risk. In particular, ICA featuring a pronounced WSS peak are statistically inclined to hosting ruptured aneurysms. Moreover, our statistical results suggest that patients with a double-bend siphons (S-class) are less prone to the development of cerebral aneurysms

Multielemental analysis and classification of amaranth seeds according to their botanical origin

The characterization of amaranth seeds (Amaranthus spp.) was developed for Amaranthus hypochondriacus, Amaranthus cruentus, and Amaranthus dubius. The elemental concentrations were determined by inductively coupled plasma optic atomic spectroscopy. Pattern recognition methods were used for the characterization of seed samples: nonsupervised methods included principal components analysis and cluster analysis; supervised methods were linear discriminant analysis and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). Informed are the concentrations of the following elements: Ag, Al, Ba, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, La, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, S, Sr, V, Zn, and Zr. The lowest mineral content was found in A. hypochondriacus, and the highest one was found in A. dubius. For the classification, selected variables for all multivariate methods were Ba, Cr, Li, Mn, Ni, S, and Sr. Nonsupervised methods allowed us to distinguish between the three species of amaranth; however, PLS-DA supervised methods showed the best prediction ability.Fil: Aguilar, Elba Graciela.
