Dynamical role of anyonic excitation statistics in rapidly rotating Bose gases

We show that for rotating harmonically trapped Bose gases in a fractional quantum Hall state, the anyonic excitation statistics in the rotating gas can effectively play a {\em dynamical} role. For particular values of the two-dimensional coupling constant g=−2πℏ2(2k−1)/mg = -2\pi \hbar^2 (2k-1)/m, where kk is a positive integer, the system becomes a noninteracting gas of anyons, with exactly obtainable solutions satisfying Bogomol'nyi self-dual order parameter equations. Attractive Bose gases under rapid rotation thus can be stabilized in the thermodynamic limit due to the anyonic statistics of their quasiparticle excitations.Comment: 4 pages of RevTex4; as published in Physical Review Letter

The Healthy Food Slide Rule (HFSR): A Nutrition Education Tool for Children

    Get PDF
The Healthy Food Slide Rule (HFSR) is a new educational tool designed specifically for use by school children in grades 4-6. The HFSR teaches the importance of including the 5 food groups and the importance of complying with appropriate portion sizes as presented in MyPyramid.1, 2 The portion size information included in the HFSR combines the healthy eating and physical activity messages offered by MyPyramid for Kids.3, 4 The new tool can be easily incorporated into existing math lessons (weights, measures, and fractions), into language arts lessons, or into science lessons.

Coherent Molecular Optics using Sodium Dimers

Coherent molecular optics is performed using two-photon Bragg scattering. Molecules were produced by sweeping an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate through a Feshbach resonance. The spectral width of the molecular Bragg resonance corresponded to an instantaneous temperature of 20 nK, indicating that atomic coherence was transferred directly to the molecules. An autocorrelating interference technique was used to observe the quadratic spatial dependence of the phase of an expanding molecular cloud. Finally, atoms initially prepared in two momentum states were observed to cross-pair with one another, forming molecules in a third momentum state. This process is analogous to sum-frequency generation in optics

Measuring the condensate fraction of rapidly rotating trapped boson systems: off-diagonal order from the density

We demonstrate a direct connection between the density profile of a system of ultra-cold trapped bosonic particles in the rapid-rotation limit and its condensate fraction. This connection can be used to probe the crossover from condensed vortex-lattice states to uncondensed quantum fluid states that occurs in rapidly rotating boson systems as the particle density decreases or the rotation frequency increases. We illustrate our proposal with a series of examples, including ones based on models of realistic finite trap systems, and comment on its application to freely expanding boson density profile measurements.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, version accepted for publication in Phys. Mots clĂ©s: Anacardium occidentale, anthracnose, contrĂŽle, fongicide de synthĂšse, NECOEnglish Title: Chemical and biological control of cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) anthracnose in CĂŽte d’IvoireEnglish AbstractAnthracnose, a fungal disease, causes significant declines in yields of cashew trees (Anacardium occidentale L.) in some producing countries. In CĂŽte d’Ivoire, anthracnose is one of the most common diseases in the cashew tree orchard and attacks all organs of the plant. This study was conducted with the aim of selecting and proposing integrated control methods through the use of synthetic fungicides and an effective biological fungicide against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Pestalotia heterocornis. The study was carried out in vitro and in a greenhouse by foliar spraying of fungicides on young leaves previously inoculated with the pathogenic agent. This study confirmed the in vitro efficacy of Carbendazim  at 1 ppm and Prochloraz at 10 ppm against C. gloeosporioides and P. heterocornis, the most common fungal pathogens found in cashew orchards of CĂŽte d’Ivoire. NECO, a Biological Fungicide was also effective by completely inhibiting the in vitro growth of C. gloeosporioides at the concentration of 300 ppm and P. heterocornis at 200 ppm. Propiconazole was less effective than the other fungicides. Carbendazim and NECO were the best fungicides against C. gloeosporioides, completely stopping the expression of symptoms of anthracnose in the greenhouse, at concentrations of 50 and 3000 ppm, respectively. These fungicides provide a basis for integrated control of cashew anthracnose. Keywords: Anacardium occidentale, anthracnose, control, synthetic fungicide, NEC

Anomalous left superior vena cava predisposing to recurrent brain abscesses: A case report and review of the literature

    Get PDF
Brain abscess is a devastating illness, with a high risk of morbidity and mortality. Recurrent brain abscess poses a challenge to diagnosis while treatment options may differ. Right to left shunt is a lesser-explored etiology for recurrent brain abscesses. PubMed literature review was performed to study all published studies with reference to right to left cardiac shunt as a possible etiology for the recurrent brain abscesses. The authors also report a case of a young male who developed recurrent brain abscess after previous resection and treatment. Right to left cardiac shunting of deoxygenated blood is an etiology for recurrent brain abscess formation. Thorough systemic workup and multispecialty treatment is recommended to treat this relatively uncommon presentation
