This research sought to understand how a multi-ethnic society interprets a development-oriented television programme. In other words, it dwelt into the reception activities of the people from various cultural backgrounds as they watched such a programme. The integration of the Social Sciences method of inquiry and the Humanities enabled a comparative empirical analysis to be carried out on this topic specifically between the media and the audience discourses. A preliminary study was first conducted with a purpose of identifying issues that were to be incorporated into the structured questionnaire which were later used in the focus group sessions. The focus group was the main method of inquiry through which data were collected from various study groups and comparatively assessed. From the findings we found that different ethnic groups made sense of the television programme in a complex and manipulated way, thus, resulting in the production of various meanings that reflect their personal invested interests. The study also supported that interpretations of television programme content were social and discursive. The socially bounded factors of the respondents such as their cultures, working style and attitude and educational level were found to have contributed to the shaping of the respective decoding behaviours. Their predispositions came into play as they relate to the particular media contents forcing them to take different decoding positions. The Parkin's Theory of Meaning Systems (1972) help to measure these decoding positions and described them as the dominant, the negotiation and the oppositional. However, this study suggested that a more flexi measure if developed could account for complexity and multi-variability in meaning making of media messages. Interestingly, this study also indicated that the subject of development could also be analyzed from the communication viewpoint using the significant communication models. In particular, the present Malaysian development strategies, with special reference to the challenges of Vision 2020, were analyzed through the interpretation of the respondents on the selected television programme. The respondents were very concerned about the perception that the development policies were politically-bound, thus causing certain level of anxiety among the different ethnic groups with different dominant level. Meanings produced as a result of interactions with media contents are not conceived merely at the psychological level of the users but often reaching the realm of the sociological influences too. The study suggested that a similar research be conducted in other multi-ethnic societies in other parts of the world

Language Interaction, Maintenance, and Loss in Makassar: A Sociolinguistic Study

    Get PDF
Abstract Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi, contains a rare set of language contact and sociolinguistic language interaction occurrences. Although the Indonesian government has nationalized Bahasa Indonesia, several ethnic languages are still spoken. Nationalism is a “superordinate” and “ideologized” statement that aims to define a socio-ethnic identity. Nationalism unites and ideologizes multiethnic nations. Thus, Bahasa Indonesia is used to unite and shape the ideas of people from many different ethnic groups across Indonesia. However, in Makassar, ethnic languages are used to identify ethnic group membership. The city’s inhabitants often speak Makassarese, Makassar Malay, Bugis, and Selayarese languages. This study will highlight the sociolinguistic consequences of language contact in Makassar, such as language maintenance and loss, code-switching and code-mixing, as well as the phenomena of bilingualism and multilingualism. This work assumes that the adoption of Bahasa Indonesia as a national language did not consider the cultural conservatism of other ethnic languages

Abstract This study aims to create a hybrid learning model, and Linguistics course instructional materials to improve students' language knowledge, theories, and skills, particularly in the English department. A research design and development process were used to construct the learning model and instructional materials. This research entails a lengthy process of determining the needs of students and developing Linguistics products or course material to improve students' capacity or skills in learning language through hybrid learning using a Moodle platform (e-learning). The participants in this study are English department students from Faculty of Languages and Literature, Universitas Negeri Makassar. The students in the English Education and Literature department served as the study's sample. The study's findings revealed a hint of a hybrid learning model based on Moodle e-learning, syllabus, Linguistics course design instructional material, and student’s worksheet activities or exercises. The creation of a Moodle-based hybrid learning model in the Linguistics course, which includes learning procedures and steps, teaching materials, and assessment of learning outcomes, is intended to improve student learning abilities, particularly in the English Department, which includes aspects of knowledge, attitudes, and skills under today's curriculum demands. The Linguistics course's teaching materials were built on a Moodle-based hybrid learning paradigm that adheres to active, interactive, and communicative learning concepts. In this learning, active, creative, and communicative learning strategies and techniques and flexible learning strategies and methods are extremely conceivable

    Get PDF
Malaysia in its effort to become a fully developed nation by 2020 has undertaken a monumental task in instilling noble values into its society including its civil sector. The integrity of the civil servants needs to be greatly improved in order to turn this vision into a reality. This project attempted to examine the level of awareness, knowledge and understanding on noble values particularly integrity among selected civil servants in selected State Government agencies in Pulau Pinang, Malaysia. The respondents were selected based on a purposive sampling technique. The research used a quantitative approach where self-administered structured questions were distributed. Descriptive and inference analysis were carried out to meet the research objectives outlined. The research findings showed that there were civil servants groups who were unclear and uncertain about the meaning of integrity in public sector. Those with shorter length of services were found to be less knowledgeable on the rule and procedure which led to them being unsure about integrity. Length of service was found to be inversely related to the perception on the knowledge of integrity, corruption and quality of service delivery

Social media can be understood that media is a tool used in communication activities. The dissemination of learning information is something that must be considered so that learning activities become more optimal and the objectives of learning can be achieved. The dissemination of information has so far experienced obstacles due to limited communication space. Various social media features used by the community, especially student students, to get learning materials in online learning activities. Fake news or hoaxes are now widely encountered on a daily basis and often even use provocative sensational titles. Based on that description, the problem is what efforts must be made in order to prevent the spread of hoax information with the knowledge and understanding of high school students in filtering information through social media. This service activity provides education to high school students about the importance of knowledge and understanding in preventing the spread of hoax information through social media for everyone. The service location will be carried out at SMA Negeri 1 Palu with the target of school students. The method of implementation is by lectures and discussions

Carbon Nanotube-Activated Thin Film Transparent Conductor Applications

    Get PDF
Carbon nanotubes are an exciting nanomaterial system that exhibit exceptional mechanical and electrical properties. Due to its small diameter of ∼1 nm and high aspect ratio in order of 103, they can readily form interconnected conducting network of continuous film with high transparency. Transparent conductor based on carbon nanotube can be grown directly into a thin-film structure, or can be processed after the growth process. Post-growth arrangement of carbon nanotube into transparent conducting thin films can be achieved by several methods. Most of the methods involve solution-processed approach, while dry-processed approach is also possible. This chapter presents a comprehensive review and methods for fabricating transparent carbon nanotube-activated thin film, which generally demonstrate high conductivity and mechanical flexibility. Comparison on the optical and electrical performance of the carbon nanotube-activated transparent conductors fabricated via different methods is presented in the chapter

Performance of Untreated Waste Cooking Oil Blends in a Diesel Engine

    Get PDF
Untreated waste cooking oil (UWCO) is not a feasible diesel fuel. The major problems in engine operation are reported mainly due to UWCO’s high viscosity. To use  UWCO's in diesel engine without modification, it is necessary to make sure that the oils properties must be similar to diesel fuel. In this study, UWCO that has been used several times for frying purposes is investigated for the utilization as an alternative fuel for diesel engines. In order to reduce the viscosity, the UWCO were blend with diesel. Two various blends of UWCO and diesel were prepared and its important properties such as viscosity, density, calorific value and flash point were  evaluated and compared with that of diesel. The blends were then tested in a direct injection diesel engine  in 10% and 30% v/v blends with a reference diesel fuel. Tests were performed under a set of engine operating conditions. It was found that blending UWCO with diesel reduces the viscosity.  Blending of UWCO with diesel has been shown to be an effective method to reduce engine problems associated with the high viscosity of UWCO. The experimental results also show that the basic engine performance such as power output and  fuelconsumptions are comparable to diesel and the emissions of CO and NOx from the UWCO/diesel blends were also found slightly higher than that of diesel fuel
