Analysis of glass fibre reinforced epoxy composite hovercraft hull base
The use of corrosion resistant and lower density composite has made it one of the choices for this weight sensitive application. Structural analysis was done in this research on the suitability and reliability of the composite for the hovercraft hull base by using NASTRAN/PATRAN software. The future recommendation in constructing the base hull prototype from composite was supported by the results from this analysis and simulations of the composite usage. The finding supported the fact that weight played a significant role in designing a hovercraft as the hull must be strong to withstand the pressure applied yet still remain light
Radiation dose obtained from abdominal computed radiography: comparison between supine and prone positions
The aims of this study were to compare the entrance surface dose (ESD) between anteroposterior (AP) supine with posteroanterior (PA) prone projection of computed radiography (CR) abdominal examination and to determine the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and ESD of a patient. AP supine and PA prone projections on the same patients for CR abdominal examination of intravenous urography (IVU) were acquired on 50 patients at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, Ipoh. All the radiographic examinations were carried out on a Siemens Multixtop general x-ray unit and the images were processed with CR Carestream Direct view Max. Entrance surface dose (ESD) in miligray (mGy) was measured using optical stimulated luminescence dosimeters (OSLD) calibrated by the Malaysian Nuclear Agency. Data were analyzed using dependent t-test comparing the AP and PA projections on the same subject and Pearson correlation was used to determine the relationship between BMI and percentage of reduction of ESD. Results showed a significant different (p < 0.01) between AP supine (mean ESD = 6.42 ± 7.13 mGy) and PA prone (mean ESD = 3.92 ± 3.56 mGy) projection at all BMI. The BMI has a positive correlation with percentage of reduction of ESD (r = 0. 61) and was statistically significant (p < 0.01). In conclusion, PA abdomen prone projection significantly reduces the radiation dose and there is a positive correlation between BMI and percentage of reduction of ESD. The use of PA prone projection for CR abdominal examination should be considered as the routine projection at all BMIs level. Awareness that as the BMI increases the ESD also increases at a moderate positive linear relationship
Rekonstruksi Nilai Budaya Siri’ Masyarakat Makassar melalui Tokoh Zainuddin dalam Novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck Karya Hamka Suatu Tinjauan Sosiologi Sastra
Artikel ini berisi tentang realitas kehidupan masyarakat suku Makassar, khususnya mengenai budaya siri’ yang dijunjung tinggi orang Makassar. Artikel ini berfokuskan pada budaya Siri’ yang dijunjung tinggi masyarakat suku Makassar yang juga sebetulnya oleh masyarakat Bugis, Mandar, dan Toraja. Siri’ dapat dipahami sebagai kemampuan seseorang mempertahankan kehormatan dan harga diri terhadap orang-orang yang mau menghina atau merendahkan harga dirinya, keluarga, ataupun kerabatnya. Siri’ diidentikkan pula dengan ‘malu’. Metode penelitian yang digunakan yaitu penelitian deskriptif kualitatif, sebab penulis akan menggambarkan secara jelas nilai budaya siri’. Dalam tipe penelitian ini, realitas bersifat ganda, holistik, hasil konstruksi, dan merupakan hasil pemahaman. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Siri’ sifatnya mutlak, tanpa tawar menawar. Apabila seseorang dijatuhkan harga dirinya, maka ia tidak akan diam saja. Seperti pada penjelasan Hamka, menjaga harga diri merupakan kewajiban moral yang paling tinggi. Bahkan, demi siri’ seseorang rela mengorbankan apa saja, termasuk jiwanya. Dalam penelitian ini menggambarkan Zainuddin sangat merendahkan diri akibat cintanya yang sangat besar terhadap Hayati. Meski akhirnya ia sadar bahwa hidup harus tetap berjalan, sebagai seorang lelaki Makassar, ia memiliki rasa “pantang” dalam memperjuangkan sesuatu dan dalam menghadapi masalah hidup. Dalam hal ini Rekonstruksi siri sebagai bentuk keteguhan prinsip dan perilaku mulia yang dijunjung tinggi masyarakat Makassar
MENINGKATKAN KETERAMPILAN SISWA DALAM BERDISKUSI MELALUI IMPLEMENTASI TEKNIK SINEKTIK
Permasalahan dalam penelitian ini adalah bagaimanakah proses penerapan teknik sinektik dalam meningkatkan keterampilan berdiskusi pada siswa kelas XI Muhammadiyah 1 Unismuh Makassar. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan berdiskusi dengan menggunakan teknik sinektik pada siswa kelas XI SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Unismuh Makassar. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas (classroom action) yang terdiri atas dua siklus. Setiap siklus dilaksanakan sebanyak 3 kali pertemuan, prosedur penelitian ini meliputi pelaksanaan tindakan, observasi dan refleksi. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas XI SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Unismuh Makassar sebanyak 32 orang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pada siklus I yang tuntas secara individual dari 32 siswa hanya 12 siswa atau 37,5% yang memenuhi kriteria ketuntasan minimal (KKM) atau berada pada kategori sangat rendah. Secara klasikal belum terpenuhi karena nilai rata-rata diperoleh sebesar 65,16. Pada siklus II dari 32 jumlah siswa terdapat 29 siswa atau 96,6% telah memenuhi KKM dan secara klasikal sudah terpenuhi yaitu nilai maksimal yang diperoleh rata-rata 76,09 atau berada dalam kategori baik. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian di atas mengemukakan bahwa keterampilan berdiskusi melalui teknik sinektik dapat ditingkatkan
In vitro mutagenesis of Etlingera elatior (Jack) and early detection of mutation using RAPD markers.
Mutation breeding techniques in combination with tissue culture and molecular marker methods provide a powerful tool for improvement of vegetatively propagated plants. The aim of this study was to develop a protocol for shoot regeneration and mutation induction of Etlingera elatior. The results of irradiation on in vitro buds of E. elatior showed LD50 to be 10 Gy, with the survival of explants being sharply reduced at this dosage. All 8 selected gamma irradiated regenerants were differentiated from the untreated control based on the banding patterns obtained using 9 primers, which generated 59 reproducible bands, whereby 35 (55.31%) were found to be polymorphic. Jaccard’s coefficient of similarity values ranging from 0.537 to 0.860 were indicative of the level of genetic variation among the mutants studied. For comparison between the potential lines (PL) and the control, a maximum similarity value(0.814) was observed in PL1 mutant, while the minimum value (0.537) was observed in PL7. In summary, a combination of irradiation, regeneration, multiplication, and random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis for early screening of mutants can speed up the breeding program of E. elatior
Conceptualizing Muslim Consumer Ethical Behaviour and its Antecedents
Businesses are gradually realizing the importance of corporate social responsibility in securing greater returns in their operations. This approach is intended to create good image for the company subsequently to attract consumers to purchase products or services from that company. The issue now is whether the consumers are ethical or not in their decision to purchase products or services from the company. Ethical consumers will think twice before making their decision to purchase. Within the western world, pertinent issues like human rights, environmental concern, sustainability, intellectual property rights and others are recognized as the major concern for the consumers before making purchase decision. In other parts of the world especially in developing countries, Muslim community is a steadily growing consumer group that should not be rightfully ignored. Studies in the areas of Muslim consumer ethics and purchasing behaviour have still remained relatively unexplored, thus, calling for this research to lessen the gap. The objective of this study is to conceptualize, develop and validate a Muslim consumer ethical model. The expected result of the study is the development of the Muslim consumer ethical model that can be used to identify the determinants of this behaviour. The results will provide deep insights on the right strategies that could be devised by companies based on the model
Callus induction in pineapple (Ananas comosus L.) cv. Moris and Josapine.
The induction of callus from Meristemic Globular Bodies (MGB) of two pineapple cultivars, namely Moris and Josapine, under six concentration levels of auxin NAA and six concentration levels of 2,4-D in Murashige and Skoog solid media, was investigated. 2,4-D auxin treatments failed to induce calli in both cultivars. However, 53.71, 75.19 and 85.93 μM levels of auxin NAA caused calli induction in Moris while levels 32.22, 53.71 and 75.19 μM also induced calli Josapine. The percentage of MGB calli formation increased with increasing time of culturing. At 6 weeks of culturing, 83% of Moris MGB explants formed calli on 85.93 μM NAA, while 50% of Josapine MGB explants formed calli on 53.71 μM NAA. Calli cultures have been an essential tool in the in vitro selection of desirable plants under manipulated conditions and from in vitro mutations via somaclonal variation. More importantly, calli are increasingly used for the application of cellular level genetic modification techniques such as the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation, particle bombardment and protoplast isolation and fusion. In this study, auxin NAA successfully initiated and proliferated calli in Moris and Josapine globular meristemic cultures
Immuno-pathophysiological responses of mouse model to experimental infection with Brucella melitensis and its lipopolysaccharides via intraperitoneal route
Brucella melitensis is one of the major zoonotic pathogens with significant economic implications worldwide. The pathogenicity is complex and not always well understood. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) remains the major virulent factor of B. melitensis and responsible for the mechanism by which the pathogen causes its deleterious effects. In this study, 84 mice of 6–8 weeks old of both sexes were divided equally into 3 groups; namely Brucella melitensis infected group, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) infected group and control group. The former two groups contained 36 mice each with equal gender distribution. The control group consisted of 12 mice only. Animals in B. melitensis infected group, a single inoculum of 0.4 ml containing 109 of B. melitensis were intraperitoneally challenged while animals in LPS group, a single dose of 0.4 ml containing LPS extracted from the B. melitensis were intraperitoneally inoculated. Animals in control group received intraperitoneally, a single dose of 0.4 ml phosphate buffered saline (PBS) of pH7. Animals that were infected intraperitoneally with B. melitensis demonstrated significant clinical presentation; gross and histo-pathological evidence than LPS infected group. However, both infected groups showed elevated levels of interleukins (IL-1β and IL6), antibody levels (IgM an IgG) as early as 3 days post-infection with predominance in LPS infected group. In contrast, low levels of sex related hormonal changes in which LPS infected group showed the least concentration were also detected throughout the experimental period. In conclusion, B. melitensis can be transmitted via gastrointestinal, respiratory and reproductive tract. Moreover, LPS stimulated significantly the innate and acquired immune system without significant systemic dysfunction, suggesting potentiality of the protective properties of this component as alternative vaccine for brucellosis infection
Plant regeneration of Brassica oleracea sub sp. italica (Broccoli) CV Green Marvel as affected by plant growth regulators
Hypocotyls and shoot tips were used as explants in in vitro plant regeneration of broccoli (Brassica oleracea subsp. italica) cv. Green Marvel. The explants were excised from sterile germinated seedlings and placed on shoot induction medium containing basal salts of Murashige and Skoog (MS) and various concentrations of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). The highest percentage of hypocotyl explant producing shoot (96.67%) and the highest mean number of shoots produced per hypocotyl explant (6.03) were obtained on 3 mgL-1BAP. Meanwhile, the highest percentage of shoot tip explant producing shoot (100%) and highest number of shoot produced per shoot tip explant (3.76) were recorded on 5 mgL-1 BAP. For rooting of shoots, NAA, indoleacetic acid (IAA) and indolebutyric acid (IBA) at 0, 0.2 and 1 mgL-1 were applied. Highest percentage of shoots with roots (100%) and highest mean number of roots produced per shoot (6.5) occurred on medium with 0.2 mgL-1 IBA, while the maximum root length (2.46 cm) was attained on MS medium without plant growth regulator (MSO). Plantlets were successfully acclimatized in potting medium containing peatmoss, perlite, and vermiculite (3:1:1)
Aspek Moral Novel Sepasang Kekasih yang Belum Bertemu Karya Boy Candra: Suatu Tinjauan Sosiologi Sastra
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk Mendeskripsikan aspek moral individu dalam novel Sepasang Kekasih yang Belum Bertemu Karya Boy Candra, Mendeskripsikan aspek moral sosial dalam novel Sepasang Kekasih yang Belum Bertemu Karya Boy Candra, Mendeskripsikan aspek moral religi dalam novel Sepasang Kekasih yang Belum Bertemu Karya Boy Candra. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deksriptif. Penelitian deskriptif merupakan jenis penelitian yang berusaha menggambarkan realitas atau fenomena secara apa adanya (objektif) berdasarkan data temuan yang dimiliki. Berdasarkan penjelasan tersebut, deskripsi novel “Sepasang Kekasih yang Belum Bertemua” karya Boy Candra dalam penelitian ini diekplorasi dengan sistematis untuk menemukan data atau fakta terkait aspek moral yang ada di dalamnya dengan menggunakan pisau bedah sosiologi sastra. Hasil dari Penelitian ini adalah tentang kutipan dalam Novel Sepasang Kekasih yang Belum Bertemu karya Boy Candra dengan pembahasan aspek moral individu, moral sosial, dan moral religi. Moral individu dalam penelitian ini diartikan sebagai persepsi diri seorang pribadi dalam menginterpretasi moral dalam diri dan perilakunnya. Sedangkan moral sosial mengajarkan tentang relasi sosial yang berlandaskan pada moral. dan moral religi meletakkan dasar pemikiran dan perilakunya di atas kaidah atau aturan agama. Untuk itu, konsep ketuhanan, ajaran kebaikan, serta larangan tentang keburukan mejadi dasar aspek moral religi yang terdapat dalam novel “Sepasang Kekasih yang Belum Bertemu” karya Boy Candra.
