    Get PDF
E-sport have evolved from a form of entertainment into a global industry with significant social, economic, and cultural impacts. While most studies focus more on negative impact of e-sport, very limited studies on the positive impact on this kind of sport, particularly among university students. This article explores e-sports practices within the university environment as a form of digital competition that goes beyond entertainment and becomes a medium for identity production, symbolic capital, as well as local expression. Using a qualitative approach and a case study of the Unhas E-sport community, data were collected through participant observation and in-depth interviews with ten informants, consisting of three e-sport professional players, four e-sport fans, and three e-sport tournament organizers. The findings reveal four key points: first, e-sports is perceived not merely as gaming, but as a career path and form of digital labor requiring discipline and strategy; second, campus-level tournaments are organized professionally, demanding intensive preparation and high mental resilience; third, the competition process involves media distribution strategies that construct reputation and symbolic capital; and fourth, e-sports practices reflect Makassar’s local expressions through team identity, cultural narratives, and the use of digital spaces. Overall, e-sports functions as a symbolic arena and microeconomic environment that fuses global gaming culture with local values, while also shaping a new digital habitus among university students

    Get PDF
This study aims to investigate the relationship between learning styles and speaking anxiety among first-semester English Education Department students at Muhammadiyah University of Enrekang. Speaking anxiety is a significant barrier to language learning, often exacerbated by mismatches between students\u27 learning styles—visual, auditory, or kinesthetic—and traditional teaching methods. To explore this relationship, a qualitative research approach was employed, with data collected through semi-structured interviews and document analysis involving 18 participants. The semi-structured interviews were designed to gather students\u27 perspectives on their learning preferences, experiences with speaking anxiety, and how these factors influenced their speaking performance. The document analysis included an examination of academic records, feedback from instructors, and reflective journals, which provided additional insights into students\u27 speaking challenges and coping mechanisms. The findings reveal that students\u27 learning styles significantly influence their experiences of speaking anxiety. Visual learners struggle with spontaneous speaking tasks due to their preference for preparation and reliance on visual aids. Auditory learners face challenges with pronunciation, often fearing their spoken English will not sound "correct." Kinesthetic learners, on the other hand, experience heightened anxiety in formal, non-interactive settings where they are unable to engage physically with the language. This study underscores the importance of aligning teaching strategies with students\u27 learning preferences to reduce anxiety and foster confidence in speaking tasks. Recommendations include adopting flexible, student-centered approaches such as incorporating visual aids, auditory exercises, and interactive, movement-based tasks that cater to various learning styles. These strategies aim to create more supportive and inclusive learning environments

    Get PDF
Glossophobia, or the fear of public speaking, is a widespread form of social anxiety that can significantly hinder students’ oral performance. This study investigates the relationship between glossophobia and students’ learning styles in the context of classroom speech activities. Employing a mixed-methods design, the research integrates quantitative data gathered through the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale (TMAS) and the Barsch Learning Style Inventory with qualitative insights obtained from classroom observations and semi-structured interviews. A total of 41 senior high school students participated in the initial survey, from which 13 individuals identified with moderate to high anxiety levels were purposively selected for in-depth analysis. The findings reveal that visual learners exhibit higher levels of speech-related anxiety compared to other learning style types. These results suggest a potential correlation between learning style preferences and students’ susceptibility to glossophobia. The study emphasizes the pedagogical importance of tailoring instructional strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles as a means of mitigating public speaking anxiety in educational settings

    Get PDF
Ladies parking is a women-only parking facility introduced to improve the safety and comfort of female users. Many countries around the world have implemented this facility, including Indonesia. In Makassar, women-only parking faces various challenges in its implementation that affect the users’ experience. This article focuses on the user experience and obstacles encountered in the implementation of ladies parking in the city of Makassar. This research using a qualitative approach was conducted in three shopping centers in Makassar, namely Panakkukang Mall, Nipah Mall and Ratu Indah Mall. This study involved 13 informants who varied based on gender consisting of six women and seven men, age (between 21 and 53 years), job (college students, private employees, housewives, parking attendant, and lecturer) and status (users, intruders, parking attendants and observers). In-depth interview and observation are two data collection methods employed in this study. The findings of this study show that the experience of users of ladies parking facilities in the city of Makassar is divided between satisfaction and disappointment. While the first can be seen from the joy of female users because this facility helps to make ease to get a parking space. On the other hand, female users feel disappointed since many parking users ignore the ladies parking rules. This is a challenge in itself in optimizing the existence of this particular facility for women. Ladies parking cannot be optimized due to a number of obstacles, namely: the male intrusion into ladies parking who see parking area is for everybody regardless of their gender, the non-compliance of male drivers with rude responses, weak supervision in the ladies parking area, and limited space for the ladies parking. Non-compliance with special parking for women is usually followed by a debate related to equality in parking lots, that anyone can park anywhere, men or women and this hinders the provision of particular parking lots for women. The experience of the users of this facility also shows the need for improvement in supervision and rule enforcement to optimize the implementation of ladies parking in order to provide comfort and security for female drivers

This study investigates the grammar learning difficulties faced by first-semester English Education students at Muhammadiyah University of Enrekang. A qualitative research approach was employed, involving semi-structured interviews and document analysis of 14 students\u27 academic records. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis, focusing on identifying recurring patterns in the students\u27 experiences and challenges. The findings reveal three main categories of difficulties: cognitive challenges, instructional shortcomings, and environmental constraints. Cognitive challenges include struggles with understanding fundamental grammar concepts, such as tenses and subject-verb agreement, compounded by difficulties in retaining rules and applying them in practical contexts. Instructional shortcomings emphasize monotonous teaching methods, lack of contextualized practice, and insufficient feedback, which hinder students\u27 progress. Environmental constraints, including limited exposure to English and inadequate social support, exacerbate these challenges. The study highlights the importance of adopting interactive, student-centered teaching methods and integrating grammar instruction into broader language skills. Practical recommendations include the use of innovative strategies such as project-based learning, grammar-focused digital tools, and the creation of English-speaking environments. These findings provide valuable insights for educators and policymakers to enhance the effectiveness of grammar instruction in EFL contexts and improve student outcomes

In particular, 72% highlighted the importance of English reading for accessing international accounting standards, while 68% emphasized writing for professional communication. Grammar mastery was also recognized as a foundational skill by 60% of respondents. Furthermore, 75% agreed that English fluency increases employability, and 67% supported the integration of English into the accounting curriculum. Institutional support was deemed adequate by 62% of participants, though there were noted calls for improvement. These findings indicate that English proficiency, along with learning motivation and social support, is positively associated with students’ academic and professional readiness. Therefore, it is recommended that curriculum development includes English for Specific Purposes (ESP), supported by institutional programs to strengthen language acquisition. Universities are encouraged to provide ongoing English language training, motivation-enhancing activities, and platforms for social engagement to support the holistic development of accounting students in the global professional context

Participatory mapping faces the dual challenge of generating data that is both valid for formal institutions and accessible to local communities, particularly those living adjacent to forest areas. This study aims to develop a participatory mapping model that integrates geospatial technology with diverse stakeholder needs, identify factors influencing community participation, and evaluate implementation impacts on data validity. Through a qualitative approach and methodological engagement within a participatory action research framework in Labbo Village, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, we developed an Integrated Participatory Land Use Planning (PLUP+) model that combines Web-GIS with microclimate sensors. Data collection methods included in-depth interviews with key actors, focus group discussions, participatory observation, public consultations, and GPS measurements. Results indicate that appropriate technological integration significantly enhances data accuracy and community participation, particularly when aligned with immediate interests such as access to agricultural assistance programs and clarification of land/village boundaries. The model facilitates effective collaboration among stakeholders through a shared platform.Key supporting factors include adequate technological infrastructure and local political support, while unstable political dynamics and digital divides present significant barriers. PLUP+ successfully integrates local knowledge with geospatial technology, empowering communities in sustainable land use planning and natural resource management. This research contributes to bridging the gap between technological innovation and participatory approaches in resource governance, offering a scalable model for similar contexts globally
