    Ramanovi i fotoluminescentni spektri čistih i kositrom obogaćenih tankih slojeva CdS pripremljenih prskanjem i pirolizom

    Thin films of CdS, pure and enriched with different concentrations of tin up to 6%, were prepared by the spray pyrolysis technique. All samples were prepared at the deposition temperature of 420 ◦C. The XRD diagnostic data of the investigated samples revealed the polycrystalline nature of the as-deposited samples. The main characteristic peaks of CdS appeared in both pure and enriched films prepared by all used methods. The enrichment of Sn has no effect on positions of the characteristic peaks. The observed effect of Sn enrichment is the change in peak broadening which increases with the increase of Sn concentration. The thickness values ranged from 0.65 up to 1.15 µm. The samples of pure CdS show a sharp absorption edge at about 2.43 eV. The absorption coefficient α of the investigated samples was calculated from transmission and reflection spectra. Photoluminescence measurements show red emission band of the as-deposited samples, which was quenched by Sn incorporation. This band is ascribed to the excess of Cd which was checked by the energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrometry. Raman spectra of samples with different concentrations of Sn were studied. They show remarkable increase of intensity when increasing the film thickness and decreasing the Sn concentration.Metodom prskanja i pirolize pripremali smo čiste i do 6% kositrom obogaćene tanke slojeve CdS. Sve uzorke smo pripremali na temperaturi polaganja od 420 ◦C. XRD spektri ispitivanih uzoraka pokazuju polikristaliničnu strukturu. Glavni karakteristični vrhovi CdS vide se i u čistim i u obogaćenim uzorcima pripremljenim primijenjenim metodama. Obogaćenje kositrom nema utjecaja na položaje karakterističnih vrhova. Međutim, javlja se proširenje vrhova koje se povećava pri povećanim koncentracijama kositra. Izmjerene i izračunate debljine slojeva su u skladu. Debljine slojeva bile su između 0.65 i 1.15 µm. Uzorci CdS pokazuju oštar apsorpcijski rub na oko 2.43 eV. Apsorpcijske koeficijente α ispitivanih uzoraka smo izveli iz transmisijskih i refleksijskih spektara. Mjerenja fotoluminescencije pokazuju crvenu emisijsku vrpcu koja trne dodavanjem kositra. Ta se vrpca tumači viškom Cd što smo potvrdili disperzivnom rendgenskom spektrometrijom (EDX). Proučavali smo i Ramanove spektre uzoraka s raznim koncentracijama kositra. Oni pokazuju snažan porast intenziteta za slojeve veće debljine i manje koncentracije kositra

This is attributed to the reduction in compression zone compared to columns under pure axial compression. Modern codes and standards are introducing the need to perform extreme event analysis under static loads. There has been a number of studies that focused on the analysis and testing of concentric columns. On the other hand, the augmentation of compressive strength due to partial confinement has not been treated before. The higher eccentricity causes smaller confined concrete region in compression yielding smaller increase in strength of concrete. Accordingly, the ultimate eccentric confined strength is gradually reduced from the fully confined value f(cc) (at zero eccentricity) to the unconfined value f(c)(1) (at infinite eccentricity) as a function of the ratio of compression area to total area of each eccentricity. This approach is used to implement an adaptive Mander model for analyzing eccentrically loaded columns. Generalization of the 3D moment of area approach is implemented based on proportional loading, fiber model and the secant stiffness approach, in an incremental-iterative numerical procedure to achieve the equilibrium path of P-epsilon and M-phi response up to failure. This numerical analysis is adapted to assess the confining effect in rectangular columns confined with conventional lateral steel. This analysis is validated against experimental data found in the literature showing good correlation to the partial confinement model while rendering the full confinement treatment unsafe

    Synthesis and characterisation of sulphonamide (Schiff base) ligand and its copper metal complex and their efficiency in polyurethane varnish as flame retardant and antimicrobial surface coating additives

    Sulphonamide compounds are present in many bioactive compounds owing to their multiple biological applications, even their metal complexes. The study reported in this paper focused on the synthesis of a sulphonamide ligand (Schiff base) and its Cu metal complex and their possible applications as antimicrobial and flame retardant additives in polyurethane formulations for surface coating application. Thus, selected divalent (Cu II) metal complex of 4-((E)-(4-hydroxy-3-((E)-(p-tolylimino)methyl) phenyl) diazenyl)-N-(5-methylisoxazol-3-yl) benzenesulphonamide was prepared and characterised using a combination of elemental analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared, Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and mass spectroscopy. The prepared Schiff base ligand and its Cu metal complex were physically added to polyurethane varnish to give varnish coating formulations at a laboratory scale and then applied onto pretreated wood and steel panels using a brush. The oxygen index, Gram negative bacteria; Gram positive bacteria and fungi values obtained indicated that the polyurethane varnish that contained the prepared ligand and its Cu metal complex as additives exhibited very good flame retardant and antimicrobial properties, respectively. It was also found that the metal complex had outperformed the ligand. The physical and mechanical resistance of the coatings was also studied, in order to assess any disadvantages owing to the incorporation of the additives. It was found that the additives did not influence the flexibility, hardness and adhesion of coating films prepared using the polyurethane varnish. The gloss of the polyurethane varnish film was improved due to the incorporation of the aromatic ring into the formulation

    SYNTHESIS OF NOVEL IMIDAZOLE AND FUSED IMIDAZOLE DERIVATIVES AS CYTOTOXIC AND ANTIMICROBIAL AGENTS: MOLECULAR DOCKING AND BIOLOGICAL EVALUATION

    Objectives: The objective of this work is to synthesize novel imidazole and fused imidazole derivatives using 5-arylidene-2-hydrazino-3-phenyl imidazolin-4-ones (5a-c) as key intermediate. The structure of the newly synthesized compounds was characterized using IR, 1HNMR, Mass spectroscopy, elemental analysis and some representative 13CNMR.Methods: The target compounds were synthesized starting from 5-arylidene-2-hydrazino-3-phenyl imidazolin-4-ones (5a-c) which prepared from the appropriate 5-arylidene-2-(methylthio)-3-phenyl imidazolin-4-ones (3a-c). Several synthetic pathways were be used for the preparation of the targets. Some of the newly synthesized compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic activity against breast carcinoma and colon carcinoma cell lines. On the other hand, the antimicrobial activity evaluation of some newly prepared compounds was performed using cup plate diffusion method.Results: Compound 5c was the most active one against breast carcinoma (IC50=3.3 ug/ml) and colon carcinoma cell lines (IC50=4.73 ug/ml) when compared with doxorubicin as standard. Molecular docking studies further supported the highest potency of 5c and further help understanding the various interactions between the ligand and enzyme active sites. On the other hand, the antimicrobial activity evaluation showed that most of the evaluated compounds exhibited broad spectrum activity.Conclusion: The present work led to the development of promising antitumor compounds containing substituted imidazolidin-5-one or imidazotriazol-6-one skeletons. Compounds 5c showed the highest potency at low µg/ml level against breast MCF-7 and colon HCT116 cell lines. On the other hand, most of the newly synthesized compounds showed broad spectrum antimicrobial activity when cup plate diffusion method was performed.Â

    Formation of the BiAg2 surface alloy on lattice-mismatched interfaces

    We report on the growth of a monolayer-thick BiAg2 surface alloy on thin Ag films grown on Pt(111) and Cu(111). Using low energy electron diffraction (LEED), angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) we show that the surface structure of the 13 ML Bi/x-ML Ag/Pt(111) system (x=2) is strongly affected by the annealing temperature required to form the alloy. As judged from the characteristic (3×3)R30 LEED pattern, the BiAg2 alloy is partially formed at room temperature. A gentle, gradual increase in the annealing temperatures successively results in the formation of a pure BiAg2 phase, a combination of that phase with a (2×2) superstructure, and finally the pure (2×2) phase, which persists at higher annealing temperatures. These results complement recent work reporting the (2×2) as a predominant phase, and attributing the absence of BiAg2 alloy to the strained Ag/Pt interface. Likewise, we show that the growth of the BiAg2 alloy on similarly lattice-mismatched 1 and 2 ML Ag-Cu(111) interfaces also requires a low annealing temperature, whilst higher temperatures result in BiAg2 clustering and the formation of a BiCu2 alloy. The demonstration that the BiAg2 alloy can be formed on thin Ag films on different substrates presenting a strained interface has the prospect of serving as bases for technologically relevant systems, such as Rashba alloys interfaced with magnetic and semiconductor substrates

    Titrated Misoprostol Versus Dinoprostone for Labor Induction

    Background: Misoprostol is as effective as dinoprostone for labor induction with low cost and temperature stability.Aim: This study designed to compare titrated misoprostol regarding its safety and efficacy with dinoprostone for induction of labor.Subjects and Methods: Women with a single pregnancy, above 37 weeks’ gestation, cephalic presentation, modified Bishop’s score <8, and not in labor with reassuring fetal heart rate, admitted for labor induction enrolled in this randomized controlled study. Studied women were randomized into; Group I: received oral misoprostol titrated in sterile water (200 μg tablet was dissolved in 200 ml sterile water [1 μg/ml]), starting dose of 20 μg misoprostol required, given every 2 h, and stopped if adequate contractions obtained and Group II: received vaginal dinoprostone tablet maximum two doses followed by augmentation of labor by oxytocin ± amniotomy if there is no uterine contractions after two doses of dinoprostone. In Group I, if the contractions were inadequate after two doses of oral titrated misoprostol (20 μg [20 ml]), the starting dose increased to 40 μg (40 ml), escalating the dose from 5 to 10 ml (45–50 μg), and 20 ml (60 μg) maximum ± amniotomy. If the uterine contractions were adequate, the next dose of misoprostol or dinoprostone was omitted. Statistical analysis done using Student’s t‑test for quantitative data and Chi‑square test for qualitative data.Results: Induction‑to‑delivery time was significantly longer in misoprostol than dinoprostone group (975 vs. 670 min, respectively), (P = 0.01). About 20.2% (21/104) of women in misoprostol group did not deliver vaginally within 24 h compared to 7.4% (8/108) in dinoprostone group (significant difference, P = 0.01). Augmentation of labor was significantly high in dinoprostone (37.96% [41/108]) compared to misoprostol group (10.6% [11/104]) (P < 0.01).Conclusion: Titrated misoprostol for induction of labor seems to be associated with significantly longer induction‑to‑delivery time, low incidence of vaginal birth within 24 h, and less need for augmentation of labor compared to vaginal dinoprostone.KEY WORDS: Dinoprostone, labor induction, titrated misoprosto

    Plant growth-promoting actinobacteria: a new strategy for enhancing sustainable production and protection of grain legumes

    Grain legumes are a cost-effective alternative for the animal protein in improving the diets of the poor in South-East Asia and Africa. Legumes, through symbiotic nitrogen fixation, meet a major part of their own N demand and partially benefit the following crops of the system by enriching soil. In realization of this sustainability advantage and to promote pulse production, United Nations had declared 2016 as the “International Year of pulses”. Grain legumes are frequently subjected to both abiotic and biotic stresses resulting in severe yield losses. Global yields of legumes have been stagnant for the past five decades in spite of adopting various conventional and molecular breeding approaches. Furthermore, the increasing costs and negative effects of pesticides and fertilizers for crop production necessitate the use of biological options of crop production and protection. The use of plant growth-promoting (PGP) bacteria for improving soil and plant health has become one of the attractive strategies for developing sustainable agricultural systems due to their eco-friendliness, low production cost and minimizing consumption of non-renewable resources. This review emphasizes on how the PGP actinobacteria and their metabolites can be used effectively in enhancing the yield and controlling the pests and pathogens of grain legumes

    SARS-CoV-2 vaccination modelling for safe surgery to save lives: data from an international prospective cohort study

    Background Preoperative SARS-CoV-2 vaccination could support safer elective surgery. Vaccine numbers are limited so this study aimed to inform their prioritization by modelling. Methods The primary outcome was the number needed to vaccinate (NNV) to prevent one COVID-19-related death in 1 year. NNVs were based on postoperative SARS-CoV-2 rates and mortality in an international cohort study (surgical patients), and community SARS-CoV-2 incidence and case fatality data (general population). NNV estimates were stratified by age (18–49, 50–69, 70 or more years) and type of surgery. Best- and worst-case scenarios were used to describe uncertainty. Results NNVs were more favourable in surgical patients than the general population. The most favourable NNVs were in patients aged 70 years or more needing cancer surgery (351; best case 196, worst case 816) or non-cancer surgery (733; best case 407, worst case 1664). Both exceeded the NNV in the general population (1840; best case 1196, worst case 3066). NNVs for surgical patients remained favourable at a range of SARS-CoV-2 incidence rates in sensitivity analysis modelling. Globally, prioritizing preoperative vaccination of patients needing elective surgery ahead of the general population could prevent an additional 58 687 (best case 115 007, worst case 20 177) COVID-19-related deaths in 1 year. Conclusion As global roll out of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination proceeds, patients needing elective surgery should be prioritized ahead of the general population
