Compensation temperatures and exchange bias in La1.5Ca0.5CoIrO6
We report on the study of magnetic properties of the La1.5Ca0.5CoIrO6 double
perovskite. Via ac magnetic susceptibility we have observed evidence of weak
ferromagnetism and reentrant spin glass behavior on an antiferromagnetic
matrix. Regarding the magnetic behavior as a function of temperature, we have
found that the material displays up to three inversions of its magnetization,
depending on the appropriate choice of the applied magnetic field. At low
temperature the material exhibit exchange bias effect when it is cooled in the
presence of a magnetic field. Also, our results indicate that this effect may
be observed even when the system is cooled at zero field. Supported by other
measurements and also by electronic structure calculations, we discuss the
magnetic reversals and spontaneous exchange bias effect in terms of magnetic
phase separation and magnetic frustration of Ir4+ ions located between the
antiferromagnetically coupled Co ions.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures and supplemental materia
An Empirical Approach to the Bond Additivity Model in Quantitative Interpretation of Sum Frequency Generation Vibrational Spectra
A complete empirical approach from known Raman and IR spectra is used to make
corrections to the bond additivity model for quantitative interpretation of Sum
Frequency generation Vibrational Spectra (SFG-VS) from molecular interfaces.
This empirical correction successfully addresses the failures of the simple
bond additivity model. This empirical approach not only provides new
understandings of the effectiveness and limitations of the bond additivity
model, but also provides a practical roadmap for its application in SFG-VS
studies of molecular interfaces
Evaluating postvention services and the acceptability of models of postvention: a systematic review
Background:
Suicide is a major public health issue that increases the risk of suicide for those bereaved by suicide themselves. There is a lack of evaluation of the effectiveness and acceptability of suicide postvention services supporting those bereaved by suicide.
Aims:
This review aimed to assess evaluations of postvention services supporting those bereaved by suicide and the acceptability of methods of postvention.
Methods:
Searches of peer-reviewed literature identified 36 studies for inclusion. 22 studies evaluated specific postvention services, 14 evaluated models of postvention.
Results:
Using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool, mixed-methods and qualitative postvention evaluation and acceptability research produce high-quality studies. Studies rated as low quality reflect poor reporting, rather than ineffective services.
Conclusion:
Further evaluation of community-based postvention services within the UK is needed. This would evidence that services in the UK are effective in supporting those bereaved by suicide. Evaluation would benefit services in accessing funding, improve service development and provide holistic support
External-Fuel Thermionic Reactors
The concept of the external-fuel thermionic converter, in which the fuel surrounds an inner emitter annulus, is introduced and the major advantages of its use in a thermionic reactor are discussed. In-core reactors, ranging from 15-ekW to megawatts, can be designed based on external-fuel converter modules of fixed emitter and collector dimensions. Sizes and weights of typical reactors in this power range are shown
Using an Indoor Localization System for Activity Recognition
Recognizing the activity performed by users is importantin many application domains, from e-health to home automation. Thispaper explores the use of a fine-grained indoor localization system, basedon ultra-wideband, for activity recognition. The user is supposed to weara number of active tags. The position of active tags is first determinedwith respect to the space where the user is moving, then some position-independent metrics are estimated and given as input to a previouslytrained system. Experimental results show that accuracy values as highas∼95% can be obtained when using a personalized model
Administration of protein hydrolysates from anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) waste for twelve weeks decreases metabolic dysfunction‐associated fatty liver disease severity in ApoE–/–mice
Metabolic dysfunction‐associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) includes several diseases, ranging from simple steatosis to steatohepatitis, fibrosis and cirrhosis. Fish‐rich diets are considered helpful in the prevention of MAFLD, and the enzymatic hydrolysis of fish waste has been explored as a means of obtaining high‐value protein hydrolysates, which have been proven to exert beneficial bioactivities including anti‐obesity and hypocholesterol effects. This study aimed to assess the effect of the administration of protein hydrolysates from anchovy waste (APH) for 12 weeks on attenuated high‐fat diet‐induced MAFLD in apolipoprotein E‐knockout mice (ApoE–/–). Thirty ApoE–/– mice were divided into two groups (n = 15/group) and fed a high‐fat diet (HFD), with and without the addition of 10% (w/w) APH. After 12 weeks, serum and hepatic lipid profiles, hepatic enzyme activities, liver histology and immunohistochemistry were analyzed to assess hepatic steatosis, inflammation and fibrosis. Twelve‐weeks on a 10% (w/w) APH diet reduces total cholesterol and triglyceride serum levels, hepatic enzyme activity and hepatic triacylglycerol content (p < 0.0001), and results in a reduction in hepatic fat accumulation and macrophage recruitment (p < 0.0001). The results suggest that a 10% APH diet has an anti‐obesity effect, with an improvement in lipid metabolism, hepatic steatosis and liver injury as a result of a high‐fat diet. Protein hydrolysates from fish waste may represent an efficient nutritional strategy in several diseases, and their use as nutraceuticals is worthy of future investigation
Direct observation of electron doping in La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 using x-ray absorption spectroscopy
We report on a X-ray absorption spectroscopic (XAS) study on a thin film of
La0.7Ce0.3MnO3, a manganite which was previously only speculated to be an
electron doped system. The measurements clearly show that the cerium is in the
Ce(IV) valence state and that the manganese is present in a mixture of Mn2+ and
Mn3+ valence states. These data unambiguously demonstrate that La0.7Ce0.3MnO3
is an electron doped colossal magnetoresistive manganite, a finding that may
open up new opportunities both for device applications as well as for further
basic research towards a better modelling of the colossal magnetoresistance
phenomenon in these materials.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, revised versio
