    Effect of Re-vibration Process on Axial Capacity of Short Reinforced Concrete Circular Columns

    A considerable amount of research work has been performed on the effects of vibrating of fresh concrete on the reduction of shrinkage and creep, the improvement bond stress between reinforcing bar and concrete, reduction the concrete permeability and improvement of the mechanical properties of concrete (tension and compression). Series of tests on reinforced concrete circular column, cubes and cylinders were carried out to study the effect of re-vibration duration on axial strength of column, compression strength of concrete cubes, and tensile strength of cylinders. Different compressive strengths of concrete and different size of aggregate were considered in this investigation. The test results show that, the re-vibration operation improves the tensile and compressive strength of concrete. The stiffness of columns increased with increasing the re-vibration duration up to1.5 times the initial vibration duration.     Toxicity Studies on Aqueous-Methanol Pod Extract of Vigna unguiculata (Cowpea) in Wistar Strain Albino Rats

    Herbal preparation of Vigna unguiculata (cowpea) pod has long been used by a group of Hausa people from northern Nigeria called Yan tauri performers and traditional healers. This study was conducted to evaluate the toxicological effect of the extract in Wistar strain albino rats using biochemical, haematological and histopathological indices of toxicity. Acute toxicity (LD50) and sub-chronic toxicity studies were determined using the method developed by OECD. Twenty-five (25) rats were grouped into five(5) consisting of five(5) rats each, one of the groups served as control., Group II, III, IV and V were orally administered with the extract at a daily dose of 400 mg/kg, 800 mg/kg, 1200 mg/kg and 1600 mg/kg of the extract, respectively for 28 days. The LD50 of the extract was greater than 5000 mg/kg and its oral administration for 28 days did not produce significant changes (P˃0.05) on biochemical and haematological indices.  Histopathological evaluation revealed mild widening of Bowman’s capsule of animals administered with 1200 mg/kg and 1600 mg/kg of the extract.     A Markovian Model for the Analysis of Age of Information in IoT Networks

    Age of Information (AoI) is a critical metric in status update systems as these systems require the fresh updates. This paper investigates the uplink of an Internet-of-thing (IoT) network where L nodes transmit their information packets to a base station. The effects of the arrival rate of packets at the nodes, the number of nodes in the system, and queue length of each node have been studied by devising a discrete time Markov chain (MC) model. This model helps in predicting the values of AoI and probability of packet drops in such systems. The notion of first-in first-out is used for queuing, which transmits the oldest packet first, resulting in decreasing the overall AoI of the system. The results show that AoI increases with the increase in queue length, number of nodes and arrival rate and we quantify the aforementioned metrics using the MC model.The results found using the MC model are also validated using extensive simulations.     Intracellular delivery of biologically active proteins remains a formidable challenge in biomedical research. Here we show that biomedically relevant enzymes can be delivered into cells using a new DNA transfection reagent, lipofectamine 3000, allowing assessment of their intracellular functions. We also show that the J774.2 macrophage cell line exhibits unusual intracellular uptake of structurally and functionally distinct enzymes providing a convenient, reagent-free approach for evaluation of intracellular activities of enzymes

    Content-Based Image Retrieval Hybrid Approach using Artificial Bee Colony and K-means Algorithms

    In this paper, a new clustering method is proposed for CBIR system; this method depends on combining ABC and k-means algorithm. Four features are used with the proposed method to retrieve the images. These features are extracted by: color histogram of HSV image and color histogram of opponent image to describe the color, Gabor filters and Ranklet transform for RGB image to describe the texture. The proposed hybrid clustering method is a clustering process for database of each feature using k-means algorithm enhanced by ABC algorithm. The innovation in this approach is that each solution in ABC algorithm represents the centroids of clusters that come out from applying k-means algorithm. The proposed method is applied on Wang dataset (1000 images in 10 classes) and evaluated by comparing the test results of the proposed scheme with another existing method uses same database. The results proved that the proposed method is superior to the existing method in terms of the precision in 6 out of 10 categories of WANG dataset, such that the average of the precisions for all categories is 0.8093

    Gravitational Charged Perfect Fluid Collapse in Friedmann Universe Models

    This paper is devoted to study the gravitational charged perfect fluid collapse in the Friedmann universe models with cosmological constant. For this purpose, we assume that the electromagnetic field is so weak that it does not introduce any distortion into the geometry of the spacetime. The results obtained from the junction conditions between the Friedmann and the Reissner-Nordstro¨\ddot{o}m de-Sitter spacetimes are used to solve the field equations. Further, the singularity structure and mass effects of the collapsing system on time difference between the formation of apparent horizons and singularity have been studied. This analysis provides the validity of Cosmic Censorship Hypothesis.     Phosphorylation does not prompt, nor prevent, the formation of alpha-synuclein toxic species in a rat model of Parkinson's disease

    Phosphorylation is involved in numerous neurodegenerative diseases. In particular, alpha-synuclein is extensively phosphorylated in aggregates in patients suffering from synucleinopathies. However, the share of this modification in the events that lead to the conversion of alpha-synuclein to aggregated toxic species needed to be clarified. The rat model that we developed through rAAV2/6-mediated expression of alpha-synuclein demonstrates a correlation between neurodegeneration and formation of small filamentous alpha-synuclein aggregates. A mutation preventing phosphorylation (S129A) significantly increases alpha-synuclein toxicity and leads to enhanced formation of beta-sheet-rich, proteinase K-resistant aggregates, increased affinity for intracellular membranes, a disarrayed network of neurofilaments and enhanced alpha-synuclein nuclear localization. The expression of a mutation mimicking phosphorylation (S129D) does not lead to dopaminergic cell loss. Nevertheless, fewer but larger aggregates are formed, and signals of apoptosis are also activated in rats expressing the phosphorylation-mimicking form of alpha-synuclein. These observations strongly suggest that phosphorylation does not play an active role in the accumulation of cytotoxic pre-inclusion aggregates. Unexpectedly, the study also demonstrates that constitutive expression of phosphorylation-mimicking forms of alpha-synuclein does not protect from neurodegeneration. The role of phosphorylation at Serine 129 in the early phase of Parkinson's disease is examined, which brings new perspective to therapeutic approaches focusing on the modulation of kinases/phosphatases activity to control alpha-synuclein toxicity
