Reframing interventions for optimal child nutrition and childhood obesity: the importance of considering psychological factors

    Get PDF
This review aims to emphasise the impact of poor nutrition on children’s health and psychological wellbeing, urging those involved in childhood obesity or nutrition services to broaden their intervention approach. Poor nutrition and childhood obesity affect physical and psychological health. The stress of living with obesity further impacts quality of life, wellbeing and self-esteem. Children living with obesity may experience adverse childhood events and stress, and young people are able to recall the impact of psychosocial issues such as experiencing stigma and discrimination. Food is often a coping mechanism for managing negative emotions, perpetuating cycles of emotional coping and unhealthy eating behaviours. UK guidelines recommend family-based, multi-component weight management interventions for children living with obesity. Interventions mainly target health behaviours and utilise behaviour change techniques attempting to directly improve diet and physical activity as behavioural outcomes. Whilst these interventions may show some improvements in psychological wellbeing, there is limited consideration or understanding of the underlying mechanisms of action which indirectly influence engagement and the sustainability of the behaviour change. Lack of attention and inclusion of psychosocial variables in intervention implementation may help explain the variable effectiveness reported across childhood obesity interventions. In conclusion, enhancing the effectiveness of childhood obesity interventions requires a broader approach that fully incorporates psychosocial factors. Those responsible for commissioning, designing and implementing these interventions should adopt a holistic approach that addresses psychological and emotional needs while incorporating underlying mechanisms of action. This shift in focus could result in more sustainable and comprehensive treatment for childhood obesity

Research design entails a process or template of finding definitive answers to research problem and questions. In this attempt a researcher employs two major types of research design; qualitative and quantitative. In the construction of research design the researcher is expected to bear in mind the features in both the qualitative, quantitative and the combination of the two (mixed) methods. The paper discusses and argues that developments in the area of ethical issues have profound effects on research design construction and implementation. It went further to emphasize threats to research design especially in the use of qualitative design method and explains the importance and set back of the use of internet to compliment research design process. A strategy is presented for the design and construction of a large master/slave-controlled, five-finger robotic hand. Each of the five fingers will possess four independent axes each driven by a brushless DC servomotor and, thus, four degrees-of-freedom. It is proposed that commercially available components be utilized as much as possible to fabricate a working laboratory model of the device with an anticipated overall length of approximately three feet (0.9 m). The fingers are to be designed to accommodate proximity, tactile, or force/torque sensors imbedded in their structure. In order to provide for the simultaneous control of the operator wears a specially instrumented glove which produces control signals corresponding to the finger configuration and which is capable of conveying sensor feedback signals to the operator. Two dexterous hand master devices are currently commercially available for this application with both undergoing continuing development

Abayomi B Ogundele, Guangming Li, Joel J EllisAlcon Research, Ltd., Fort Worth, TX, USAIntroduction: The purpose of this study was to examine and compare the conjunctival irritation (congestion, swelling, and discharge) of topical bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.01% and bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03% in rabbits. Methods: Six healthy New Zealand White rabbits were treated with either bimatoprost 0.01% or bimatoprost 0.03% (3 animals/group). One dose (2 drops/dose) of study medication was administered to the right eye of each animal every 30 minutes for 4.5 hours. Approximately 1 hour after the last dose, conjunctival irritation was assessed using a slit-lamp biomicroscope to individually evaluate conjunctival congestion, swelling, and discharge. Results: The mean conjunctival congestion, swelling and discharge scores for bimatoprost 0.03% were 1.67, 0.33 and 0.33, respectively, and for bimatoprost 0.01% were 2.00, 0.33 and 1.33, respectively. Conclusions: Despite the lower drug concentration of the 0.01% formulation, bimatoprost 0.01% does not reduce conjunctival irritation, including conjunctival congestion, swelling, and discharge, in rabbits compared to bimatoprost 0.03%. Further studies would be needed to determine whether the increase in the mean conjunctival congestion and discharge scores may be attributed to the increased BAK concentration in the bimatoprost 0.01% formulation. Keywords: bimatoprost, conjunctiva, ocular toxicity, preclinical, prostaglandin analog, rabbit

    Get PDF
Dexamethasone is a potent synthetic member of the glucocorticoid class of corticosteroid drugs that has been useful for the management of some pathological disorders because it affects a protean number of signaling pathways. It is used as adjunct therapy in the management of sepsis, arthritis, cardiac transplant, blood, hormone/immune system disorders, allergic reaction, skin, eye conditions, cancer and other pathologic disorders and as a mainstay of therapy in autoimmune hepatitis. With the advent of COVID-19, there have been investigations of its use as antiinflammatory agent in severely ill patients. This present review elucidates the various studies on the use of dexamethasone in the management of severe respiratory tract infections, with the ultimate aim of reducing mortality amongst severely ill patients, including COVID-19. Facial Image Verification and Quality Assessment System -FaceIVQA

    Get PDF
Although several techniques have been proposed for predicting biometric system performance using quality values, many of the research works were based on no-reference assessment technique using a single quality attribute measured directly from the data. These techniques have proved to be inappropriate for facial verification scenarios and inefficient because no single quality attribute can sufficient measure the quality of a facial image. In this research work, a facial image verification and quality assessment framework (FaceIVQA) was developed. Different algorithms and methods were implemented in FaceIVQA to extract the faceness, pose, illumination, contrast and similarity quality attributes using an objective full-reference image quality assessment approach. Structured image verification experiments were conducted on the surveillance camera (SCface) database to collect individual quality scores and algorithm matching scores from FaceIVQA using three recognition algorithms namely principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and a commercial recognition SDK. FaceIVQA produced accurate and consistent facial image assessment data. The Result shows that it accurately assigns quality scores to probe image samples. The resulting quality score can be assigned to images captured for enrolment or recognition and can be used as an input to quality-driven biometric fusion systems.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v3i6.503

Background: It is well documented that malnutrition has been and still is a widespread problem in NHS hospitals, yet it is not considered a priority. Sub-optimal nutrition in pregnancy can adversely affect the health of both mother and foetus. Poor dietary intaks following pelvic radiotherapy can impact on health and recovery of cancer sufferers. In Uk hospitals, numerous policies and campaigns have attempted to increase awareness and improve clinical management of malnutrition in recent decades, with limited success. The researcher is also a dietitian at the study hospital and so has an obligation to increase awareness and management of malnutrition. Aims: To identify the prevalence of some nutrition related problems in NHS hospital; to explore which areas of the community contribute malnourished women to the hospital; to investigate the role of malnutrition and its promotion within 'holistic care' and to review recent guidelines and policies aimed at tackling malnutrition in NHS hospitals

    Get PDF
Global warming is the observed increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans in recent decades. Scientists have concluded that human activities are contributing to global warming by adding large amounts of hear-trapping gases to the atmosphere. Using a case study like Nigeria with a population of about 140 million, the main contribution in this research is focused on a financial and ecological energy efficient home design model by considering how the energy saved from ~sing EEH as a tool for DSM can reduce CO emission. A cost benefit analysis was 2 performed and the system was found to be an efficient method of promoting the use of energy saving devices, managing load demand, efficiently utilizing available energy, environmental protection and creation of reserve (savings). Averagely implementing EERHM will result in a national global warming reduction to the tune of 393.3 X 109 Kg of C02• The technology is recommended to governments and other agencies as part of reducing Co2 and of global warming

Maternal mental health and infant and young child undernutrition: protocol for a systematic review

    Get PDF
INTRODUCTION: Mental health disorder, particularly depression, is one of the leading causes of ‘disease related disability’ in women that both affects the women but has adverse effect on their children. This can have an impact on mothers’ capacity of child care which ultimately increases the risk of infection, malnutrition, impaired growth and behavioural problems in children that might extend to adulthood too. Diminished child growth has an irreversible effect both short and long terms, affecting physical growth, brain development, performance in education, working capacity and increased risks to non-communicable diseases. To date, the reviews conducted are only limited to few countries or maternal depression or certain age group of children. Our aim is to provide a global perspective focusing on all early childhood undernutrition (under 5 years) and to see if the association between maternal mental health and child undernutrition has yielded similar or different result. Furthermore, we intend to explore the risk factors associated with copresence of maternal mental health issues and undernutrition in children. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: MEDLINE (PubMed), PsycINFO, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Global Health Library Relevant reports from the WHO, United Nations of Children Education Fund and organisations working in maternal and child health will also be searched. Database of systematic reviews and database of abstracts of reviews of effects will also be searched for relevant literature. Papers published from 1995 to 2020 in English will be included. Title, abstract or both will be screened independently by reviewers. For data analysis and synthesis, we will present all the outcomes mentioned in the studies and a subgroup analysis for age and sex will be conducted. This study aims to conduct a meta-analysis. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval is not required to conduct this review. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER: CRD42020189315
