    An approach to calculate the triplet structure of a simple liquid, that was proposed some years ago by Barrat, Hansen, and Pastore Í“Phys. Rev. Lett. 58, 2075 Í‘1987Í’Í” has been tested in the binary case. This approach is based on a factorization ansatz for the triplet direct correlation function c (3) ; the unknown factor function is determined via the sum rule relating c (3) and the pair direct correlation function which is the only input information of the system that is required in this formalism. We present an efficient and stable numerical algorithm which solves the six Í‘partly coupledÍ’ integral equations for the unknown factor functions. Results are given for the case of a binary hard-sphere mixture and complemented by computer simulation data

    In vivo testing of novel vaccine prototypes against Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae

    Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (A. pleuropneumoniae) is a Gram-negative bacterium that represents the main cause of porcine pleuropneumonia in pigs, causing significant economic losses to the livestock industry worldwide. A. pleuropneumoniae, as the majority of Gram-negative bacteria, excrete vesicles from its outer membrane (OM), accordingly defined as outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). Thanks to their antigenic similarity to the OM, OMVs have emerged as a promising tool in vaccinology. In this study we describe the in vivo testing of several vaccine prototypes for the prevention of infection by all known A. pleuropneumoniae serotypes. Previously identified vaccine candidates, the recombinant proteins ApfA and VacJ, administered individually or in various combinations with the OMVs, were employed as vaccination strategies. Our data show that the addition of the OMVs in the vaccine formulations significantly increased the specific IgG titer against both ApfA and VacJ in the immunized animals, confirming the previously postulated potential of the OMVs as adjuvant. Unfortunately, the antibody response raised did not translate into an effective protection against A. pleuropneumoniae infection, as none of the immunized groups following challenge showed a significantly lower degree of lesions than the controls. Interestingly, quite the opposite was true, as the animals with the highest IgG titers were also the ones bearing the most extensive lesions in their lungs. These results shed new light on A. pleuropneumoniae pathogenicity, suggesting that antibody-mediated cytotoxicity from the host immune response may play a central role in the development of the lesions typically associated with A. pleuropneumoniae infections

    Ab initio van der Waals interactions in simulations of water alter structure from mainly tetrahedral to high-density-like

    The structure of liquid water at ambient conditions is studied in ab initio molecular dynamics simulations using van der Waals (vdW) density-functional theory, i.e. using the new exchange-correlation functionals optPBE-vdW and vdW-DF2. Inclusion of the more isotropic vdW interactions counteracts highly directional hydrogen-bonds, which are enhanced by standard functionals. This brings about a softening of the microscopic structure of water, as seen from the broadening of angular distribution functions and, in particular, from the much lower and broader first peak in the oxygen-oxygen pair-correlation function (PCF), indicating loss of structure in the outer solvation shells. In combination with softer non-local correlation terms, as in the new parameterization of vdW-DF, inclusion of vdW interactions is shown to shift the balance of resulting structures from open tetrahedral to more close-packed. The resulting O-O PCF shows some resemblance with experiment for high-density water (A. K. Soper and M. A. Ricci, Phys. Rev. Lett., 84:2881, 2000), but not directly with experiment for ambient water. However, an O-O PCF consisting of a linear combination of 70% from vdW-DF2 and 30% from experiment on low-density liquid water reproduces near-quantitatively the experimental O-O PCF for ambient water, indicating consistency with a two-liquid model with fluctuations between high- and low-density regions

    The study presents the development of a platform for structuring adaptive courses based on active, reflexive, theoretical and pragmatic learning styles using artificial intelligence techniques. To this end, the following phases were followed: search, analysis and classification of information about the process of generating content for courses; analysis and coding of the software component for generating content according to learning styles; and application of tests for validation and acceptance. The main contribution of the paper is the development of a model using neural networks and its integration in an application server to determine the contents that correspond to the active, reflexive, theoretical and pragmatic learning styles
