Solar Carbon Monoxide, Thermal Profiling, and the Abundances of C, O, and their Isotopes
A solar photospheric "thermal profiling" analysis is presented, exploiting
the infrared rovibrational bands of carbon monoxide (CO) as observed with the
McMath-Pierce Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) at Kitt Peak, and from above
the Earth's atmosphere by the Shuttle-borne ATMOS experiment. Visible continuum
intensities and center-limb behavior constrained the temperature profile of the
deep photosphere, while CO center-limb behavior defined the thermal structure
at higher altitudes. The oxygen abundance was self consistently determined from
weak CO absorptions. Our analysis was meant to complement recent studies based
on 3-D convection models which, among other things, have revised the historical
solar oxygen (and carbon) abundance downward by a factor of nearly two;
although in fact our conclusions do not support such a revision. Based on
various considerations, an oxygen abundance of 700+/-100 ppm (parts per million
relative to hydrogen) is recommended; the large uncertainty reflects the model
sensitivity of CO. New solar isotopic ratios also are reported for 13C, 17O,

Recent atmospheric neutrino results from Soudan 2
An updated measurement of the atmospheric nu_mu/nu_e ratio-of-ratios,
0.68+-0.11+-0.06, has been obtained using a 4.6-kty exposure of the Soudan-2
iron tracking calorimeter. The L/E distributions have been analyzed for effects
of nu_mu -> nu_x oscillations, and an allowed region in the Delta m^2 vs. sin^2

Charge density waves and Fermi surface reconstruction in the clean overdoped cuprate superconductor Tl2Ba2CuO6+δ
Hall effect and quantum oscillation measurements on high temperature cuprate superconductors show that underdoped compositions have small Fermi surface pockets whereas when heavily overdoped, a single much larger pocket is found. The origin of this change in electronic structure has been unclear, but may be related to the high temperature superconductivity. Here we show that the clean overdoped single-layer cuprate Tl(2)Ba(2)CuO(6+δ) (Tl2201) displays CDW order with a remarkably long correlation length ξ ≈ 200 Å which disappears above a hole doping of p(CDW) ≈ 0.265. We show that the evolution of the electronic properties of Tl2201 as the doping is lowered may be explained by a Fermi surface reconstruction which accompanies the emergence of the CDW below p(CDW). Our results demonstrate importance of CDW correlations in understanding the electronic properties of overdoped cuprates
Comparative analysis between condom use clusters and risk behaviours among portuguese university students
The research on condom use has been focused on high-risk individuals, paying less attention to those who have moderate risk or safe sexual conducts. In order to design accurate interventions, potential differences among the condom use behavior groups must be considered. The goal was to assess possible differences in individuals presenting different types of risk behavior. 140 heterosexual university students answered a self-reported questionnaire about their sexual history, condom use habits, sexual self-esteem, sexual satisfaction, sexual control, attitudes towards condoms, self-efficacy to condom use, and emotions and feelings during sexual intercourse. A cluster analysis was conducted using the results about condom use and risk behaviors. Three groups with different risk levels emerged, presenting differences over sexual self-efficacy, attitudes towards condoms, socio-demographic variables, and sexual history. The results suggest the condom use inconsistency is highly associated with other risk behaviors but the contrary does not necessarily happens. Condom use consistent users also presented risk behaviors as smoking and drinking. The group differences suggest the risks were more affected by the combination of lack of skills with a negative attitude toward condoms than by contextual or personal variables. These differences sustain the need of an intervention adjusted to the individual's risk levels, since they differ on skills and beliefs that may hinder or promote the adoption of health behaviors.Foundation for Science and Technology/Fundacao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia (Portugal)info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Reversal-free CaIIH profiles: a challenge for solar chromosphere modeling in quiet inter-network
We study chromospheric emission to understand the temperature stratification
in the solar chromosphere. We observed the intensity profile of the CaIIH line
in a quiet Sun region close to the disk center at the German Vacuum Tower
Telescope. We analyze over 10^5 line profiles from inter-network regions. For
comparison with the observed profiles, we synthesize spectra for a variety of
model atmospheres with a non local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) radiative
transfer code. A fraction of about 25% of the observed CaIIH line profiles do
not show a measurable emission peak in H_{2v} and H_{2r} wavelength bands
(reversal-free). All of the chosen model atmospheres with a temperature rise
fail to reproduce such profiles. On the other hand, the synthetic calcium
profile of a model atmosphere that has a monotonic decline of the temperature
with height shows a reversal-free profile that has much lower intensities than
any observed line profile. The observed reversal-free profiles indicate the
existence of cool patches in the interior of chromospheric network cells, at
least for short time intervals. Our finding is not only in conflict with a
full-time hot chromosphere, but also with a very cool chromosphere as found in

Unravelling the nature of HD 81032 - a new RS CVn Binary
BVR photometric and quasi-simultaneous optical spectroscopic observations of
the star HD 81032 have been carried out during the years 2000 - 2004. A
photometric period of d has been detected for this star. A
large group of spots with a migration period of years is
inferred from the first three years of the data. H and Ca II H and K
emissions from the star indicate high chromospheric activity. The available
photometry in the BVRIJHK bands is consistent with spectral type of K0 IV
previously found for this star. We have also examined the spectral energy
distribution of HD 81032 for the presence of an infrared colour excess using
the 2MASS JHK and IRAS photometry, but found no significant excess in any band
abovethe normal values expected for a star with this spectral type. We have
also analyzed the X-ray emission properties of this star using data obtained by
the ROSAT X-ray observatory during its All-Sky Survey phase. An X-ray flare of
about 12 hours duration was detected during the two days of X-ray coverage
obtained for this star. Its X-ray spectrum, while only containing 345 counts,
is inconsistent with a single-temperature component solar-abundance coronal
plasma model, but implies either the presence of two or more plasma components,
non-solar abundances, or a combination of both of these properties. All of the
above properties of HD 81032 suggest that it is a newly identified, evolved RS

Muon diffusion and trapping in chalcopyrite semiconductors
The diffusion parameters of diamagnetic muons in chalcopyrites CuInSe2, CuInS2, CuInTe2, CuGaTe2 and (Ag0.25Cu0.75)InSe2 were obtained by [mu]SR methods. The variations among the different compositions were found to validate the anion-antibonding localization model. The application of a two-state model to the zero-field data revealed muon trapping by defects. The dipolar width at the trap and the number of jumps before trapping were determined. Soroepidemiologia do lentivirus em ovinos no Semiárido baiano.
[Epidemiology of small ruminant lentiviruses in sheep semiarid of Bahia]. Abstract: To verify the occurrence of antibodies against SRLV in sheep flocks from farms located in Microregion of Feira de Santana, Bahia, we performed a seroepidemiological survey of 10 municipalities with the most effective micro sheep: Antonio Cardoso, Feira de Santana, Ipecaetá , Ipirá, Itatim, Pintadas, Rafael Jambeiro, Santa Terezinha, Santo Estevão e Serra Preta, totaling 384 samples collected from 48 municipalities visited properties. The samples were subjected to the test of agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) to give negative results in all sera investigated. This finding can be attributed to the composition of herds, which are mostly of animals breed, the system of creation predominantly semi-extensive and type of exploitation for meat, which reduced the risk of introduction of lentivirus . Therefore, in order to preserve the genetic material already adapted to semi-arid climatic adversities, sanitary measures can be taken to prevent the entry of infectious agents circulating in these herds.
