Curry-assisted diagnosis in the rheumatology clinic.
We report five cases of glucocorticoid-responsive mouth symptoms in polymyalgia rheumatica/giant cell arteritis (GCA); three cases of tongue pain exacerbated by hot/spicy food, a case of scalp pain made worse by eating hot/spicy food and a case of sore tongue as a presenting feature of GCA. These cases emphasize the importance of asking about mouth symptoms and changes in taste when evaluating patients with suspected GCA
Simultaneous determination of wave speed and arrival time of reflected waves using the pressure-velocity loop

The official published version can be found at the link below.In a previous paper we demonstrated that the linear portion of the pressureâvelocity loop (PU-loop) corresponding to early systole could be used to calculate the local wave speed. In this paper we extend this work to show that determination of the time at which the PU-loop first deviates from linearity provides a convenient way to determine the arrival time of reflected waves (Tr). We also present a new technique using the PU-loop that allows for the determination of wave speed and Tr simultaneously. We measured pressure and flow in elastic tubes of different diameters, where a strong reflection site existed at known distances away form the measurement site. We also measured pressure and flow in the ascending aorta of 11 anaesthetised dogs where a strong reflection site was produced through total arterial occlusion at four different sites. Wave speed was determined from the initial slope of the PU-loop and Tr was determined using a new algorithm that detects the sampling point at which the initial linear part of the PU-loop deviates from linearity. The results of the new technique for detecting Tr were comparable to those determined using the foot-to-foot and wave intensity analysis methods. In elastic tubes Tr detected using the new algorithm was almost identical to that detected using wave intensity analysis and foot-to-foot methods with a maximum difference of 2%. Tr detected using the PU-loop in vivo highly correlated with that detected using wave intensity analysis (r 2 = 0.83, P < 0.001). We conclude that the new technique described in this paper offers a convenient and objective method for detecting Tr, and allows for the dynamic determination of wave speed and Tr, simultaneously
On the unification of dwarf and giant elliptical galaxies
The near orthogonal distributions of dwarf elliptical (dE) and giant
elliptical (E) galaxies in the mu_e-Mag and mu_e-log(R_e) diagrams have been
interpreted as evidence for two distinct galaxy formation processes. However,
continuous, linear relationships across the alleged dE/E boundary at M_B = -18
mag - such as those between central surface brightness (mu_0) and (i) galaxy
magnitude and (ii) light-profile shape (n) - suggest a similar, governing
formation mechanism. Here we explain how these latter two linear trends
necessitate a different behavior for dE and E galaxies, exactly as observed, in
diagrams involving mu_e (and also _e). A natural consequence is that the
distribution of dEs and Es in Fundamental Plane type analyses that use the
associated intensity I_e, or _e, are expected to appear different. Together
with other linear trends across the alleged dE/E boundary, such as those
between luminosity and color, metallicity, and velocity dispersion, it appears
that the dEs form a continuous extension to the E galaxies. The presence of
partially depleted cores in luminous (M_B < -20.5 mag) Es does however signify
the action of a different physical process at the centers (< ~300 pc) of these

Visualization of ATP synthase dimers in mitochondria by electron cryo-tomography

Available from the publisher via the DOI in this recordThe video component of this article can be found at http://www.jove.com/video/51228/Electron cryo-tomography is a powerful tool in structural biology, capable of visualizing the three-dimensional structure of biological samples, such as cells, organelles, membrane vesicles, or viruses at molecular detail. To achieve this, the aqueous sample is rapidly vitrified in liquid ethane, which preserves it in a close-to-native, frozen-hydrated state. In the electron microscope, tilt series are recorded at liquid nitrogen temperature, from which 3D tomograms are reconstructed. The signal-to-noise ratio of the tomographic volume is inherently low. Recognizable, recurring features are enhanced by subtomogram averaging, by which individual subvolumes are cut out, aligned and averaged to reduce noise. In this way, 3D maps with a resolution of 2 nm or better can be obtained. A fit of available high-resolution structures to the 3D volume then produces atomic models of protein complexes in their native environment. Here we show how we use electron cryo-tomography to study the in situ organization of large membrane protein complexes in mitochondria. We find that ATP synthases are organized in rows of dimers along highly curved apices of the inner membrane cristae, whereas complex I is randomly distributed in the membrane regions on either side of the rows. The concept of remembrance in Walter Benjamin
This thesis argues that the role played by the concept of remembrance (Eingedenken)
in Walter Benjamin's 'theory of the knowledge of history' and in his engagement with
Enlightenment universal history, is a crucial one. The implications of Benjamin's
contention that history's 'original vocation' is 'remembrance' have hitherto gone
largely unnoticed. The following thesis explores the meaning of the concept of
remembrance and assesses the significance of this proposed link between history and
memory, looking at both the mnemonic aspect of history and the historical facets of
memory. It argues that by mobilising the simultaneously destructive and constructive
capacities of remembrance, Benjamin sought to develop a critical historiography
which would enable a radical encounter with a previously suppressed past. In so doing
he takes up a stance (explicit and implicit) towards existing philosophical conceptions
of history, in particular the idea of universal history found in German Idealism.
Benjamin reveals an intention to retain the epistemological aspirations of universal
history whilst ridding that approach of its apologetic moment. He criticises existing
conceptions of history on the basis that each assumes homogeneous time to be the
framework in which historical events occur. Insight into the distinctive temporality of
remembrance proves to be the touchstone for this critique, and provides a paradigm
for a very different conception of time. The thesis goes on to determine what is valid
and what is problematic both in this concept of remembrance and in the theory of
historical knowledge which it informs, by subjecting both to the most cogent
criticisms which can be levelled at them. What emerges is not only the importance of
this concept for an understanding of Benjamin's philosophy but the pertinence of this
concept for any philosophical account of memory
The pre-main sequence binary HK Ori : Spectro-astrometry and EXPORT data
In this paper we present multi-epoch observations of the pre-main sequence
binary HK Ori. These data have been drawn from the EXPORT database and are
complemented by high quality spectro-astrometric data of the system. The
spectroscopic data appear to be very well represented by a combination of an A
dwarf star spectrum superposed on a (sub-)giant G-type spectrum. The radial
velocity of the system is consistent with previous determinations, and does not
reveal binary motion, as expected for a wide binary. The spectral, photometric
and polarimetric properties and variability of the system indicate that the
active object in the system is a T Tauri star with UX Ori characteristics. The
spectro-astrometry of HK Ori is sensitive down to milli-arcsecond scales and
confirms the speckle interferometric results from Leinert et al. The
spectro-astrometry allows with fair certainty the identification of the active
star within the binary, which we suggest to be a G-type T Tauri star based on

Intra-amniotic delivery of CFTR-expressing adenovirus does not reverse cystic fibrosis phenotype in inbred CFTR-knockout mice

Copyright © 2008 The American Society of Gene Therapy.Due to its early onset and severe prognosis, cystic fibrosis (CF) has been suggested as a candidate disease for in utero gene therapy. In 1997, a study was published claiming that to how transient prenatal expression of CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) from an in utero âinjected adenovirus vector could achieve permanent reversal of the CF intestinal pathology in adult CF knockout mice, despite the loss of CFTR transgene expression by birth. This would imply that the underlying cause of CF is a prenatal defect for which lifelong cure can be achieved by transient prenatal expression of CFTR. Despite criticism at the time of publication, no independent verification of this contentious finding has been published so far. This is vital for the development of future therapeutic strategies as it may determine whether CF gene therapy should be performed prenatally or postnatally. We therefore reinvestigated this finding with an identical adenoviral vector and a knockout CF mouse line (CftrtmlCam) with a completely inbred genetic background to eliminate any effects due to genetic variation. After delivery of the CFTR-expressing adenovirus to the fetal mouse, both vector DNA and transgenic CFTR expression were detected in treated animals postpartum but statistically no significant difference in survival was observed between the Cftrâ/â mice treated with the CFTR-adenovirus and those treated with the control vector.Sport Aiding Medical Research for Kids, the

Non-state nations: Structure, rescaling, and the role of territorial policy communities, illustrated by the cases of Wales and Sardinia
This paper explores the role of non-state nationsâ identity and agency with regard to relations with their host nation states. The particular focus here is on the means by which such regions might express their individuality. To this end, we employ a comparative case study analysis of two non-state nations with a range of differing yet in other ways similar qualities â namely Wales (UK) and Sardinia (Italy). We suggest that this is a valuable exercise, allowing as it does for the exploring of evidence âon the groundâ of the processes involved. The conceptual rationale for the paper is provided by new regionalism â regions as actors beyond the nation state. Following this, the idea of the âterritorial policy communityâ is presented as a point of departure, with the scope of the paper being to develop a diachronic framework for regional change. Given the focus on identity and interest articulation, the role of regional political parties is a particular subject of the empirical investigation, with non-state nations and nation states linked by opportunistic relationships based on political and electoral support. We then consider what this might mean with regard to the capacity of non-state nations to build on the past to successfully negotiate future policy-making agendas. Finally, we reflect on the limitations of the study, and consider the implications of its findings for further research agendas
Ordering phenomena in quasi one-dimensional organic conductors
Low-dimensional organic conductors could establish themselves as model
systems for the investigation of the physics in reduced dimensions. In the
metallic state of a one-dimensional solid, Fermi-liquid theory breaks down and
spin and charge degrees of freedom become separated. But the metallic phase is
not stable in one dimension: as the temperature is reduced, the electronic
charge and spin tend to arrange themselves in an ordered fashion due to strong
correlations. The competition of the different interactions is responsible for
which broken-symmetry ground state is eventually realized in a specific
compound and which drives the system towards an insulating state.
Here we review the various ordering phenomena and how they can be identified
by optic and magnetic measurements. While the final results might look very
similar in the case of a charge density wave and a charge-ordered metal, for
instance, the physical cause is completely different. When density waves form,
a gap opens in the density of states at the Fermi energy due to nesting of the
one-dimension Fermi surface sheets. When a one-dimensional metal becomes a
charge-ordered Mott insulator, on the other hand, the short-range Coulomb
repulsion localizes the charge on the lattice sites and even causes certain
charge patterns.
We try to point out the similarities and conceptional differences of these
phenomena and give an example for each of them. Particular emphasis will be put
on collective phenomena which are inherently present as soon as ordering breaks
