Gravitational wave recoils in non-axisymmetric Robinson-Trautman spacetimes

We examine the gravitational wave recoil waves and the associated net kick velocities in non-axisymmetric Robinson-Trautman spacetimes. We use characteristic initial data for the dynamics corresponding to non-head-on collisions of black holes. We make a parameter study of the kick distributions, corresponding to an extended range of the incidence angle ρ0\rho_0 in the initial data. For the range of ρ0\rho_0 examined (3ρ01103^{\circ} \leq \rho_0 \leq 110^{\circ}) the kick distributions as a function of the symmetric mass parameter η\eta satisfy a law obtained from an empirical modification of the Fitchett law, with a parameter CC that accounts for the non-zero net gravitational momentum wave fluxes for the equal mass case. The law fits accurately the kick distributions for the range of ρ0\rho_0 examined, with a rms normalized error of the order of 5%5 \%. For the equal mass case the nonzero net gravitational wave momentum flux increases as ρ0\rho_0 increases, up to ρ055\rho_0 \simeq 55^{\circ} beyond which it decreases. The maximum net kick velocity is about 190km/s190 {\rm km/s} for for the boost parameter considered. For ρ050\rho_0 \geq 50^{\circ} the distribution is a monotonous function of η\eta. The angular patterns of the gravitational waves emitted are examined. Our analysis includes the two polarization modes present in wave zone curvature.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1403.4581, arXiv:1202.1271, arXiv:1111.122

Microbially induced sedimentary structures in the Paleoproterozoic, upper Huronian Supergroup, Canada

The Paleoproterozoic Gordon Lake and Bar River formations, Huronian Supergroup, contain a variety of sedimentary structures in the Flack Lake area of Ontario, Canada, that have been considered of debatable origin. We identify these structures as microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS). The preserved MISS are related to microbial mat destruction and decay, and include sand cracks, mat chips, remnant gas domes, pyrite patches, and iron laminae. A biological origin for the fossil structures is supported by their similarities to modern and ancient documented examples of MISS, the sand-dominated nature of the substrate in which they are preserved, and key microtextures identified in thin section. Microtextures include curled, frayed and layered mat chips, carbonaceous laminae, oriented grains, and concentrated heavy minerals. On outcrop scale, the presence of desiccation cracks, flaser and lenticular bedding, and ripples in association with the types of MISS identified in the Gordon Lake Formation support the interpretation of a tidal flat depositional environment. The Gordon Lake Formation contains a greater number and diversity of MISS than the overlying Bar River Formation, as a result of lower energy deposition in the former. The quartz arenite of the Bar River Formation contains fine-grained to pebbly granulestone characterized mainly by tangential and planar cross beds, which is consistent with a tidal channel or sand shoal setting. Although fossil evidence of life is rare in the rocks of the Huronian Supergroup, identification of MISS in the Flack Lake area provides a significant and convincing indication of microbial colonization at the time of deposition

Effective control of osteomyelitis (bone infection) with reduced toxicity is a current challenge. Targeted and controlled drug delivery systems allow: decreased toxicity, upgraded drug targeting, and improved therapeutic effect. Strategy: a) Innovative chitosan nanoparticulate system: nanoparticles loaded with minocycline (antibacterial), and alternative as a local delivery system; b) Nanoparticles and biofilms: advantages: enhanced bioavailability, targeted delivery of antibiotics magnification, local release of antibiotics, controlled and sustained release, and protection against deactivating enzymes.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Opiniões e atitudes em relação à sexualidade: pesquisa de âmbito nacional, Brasil 2005

OBJECTIVE: To describe opinions and attitudes concerning sexuality of the Brazilian urban population. METHODS: A population survey was carried out in 2005 on a representative sample of 5,040 interviewees. An analysis of the attitudes regarding sexual initiation and sexual education of teenagers, considering gender, age, schooling, income, marital status, color, geographic region and opinion on fidelity, homosexuality, and masturbation. The results were contrasted with a similar survey carried out in 1998, when possible. RESULTS: Most interviewees selected the "sex is evidence of love" option when describing the meaning of sex. As in 1998, the majority was in favor of sexual initiation after marriage (63.9% for women vs. 52.4% for men initiation); results differed among religions. School teenage education on the use of condoms was supported by 97% of the interviewees across all social groups. The proportion of Brazilians who agreed with having access to condoms in health services (95%) and at school (83.6%) was high. Fidelity remained an almost unanimous value and there was an increase, in 2005, in the proportion of those in favor of sexual initiation after marriage, and in the rate of acceptance of masturbation and homosexuality compared to the 1998 survey. The younger generations tend to be more tolerant and equalitarian. CONCLUSIONS: As observed in other countries, this study confirms the difficulty in establishing a single dimension that guides sexual life ("liberal" vs "conservative"). The study suggests that the normativity concerning sexual activity should be understood in the light of the local culture and social organization of sexuality, considered by the STD/Aids programs. Opinions in favor of free access to preservatives at school clash with the slower results obtained in fighting the stigma and discriminating against homosexual minorities. The design of laical policies on sexuality allow for the dialog across different perspectives.OBJETIVO: Descrever opiniões e atitudes sobre sexualidade da população urbana brasileira.
