Iron and s-elements abundance variations in NGC5286: comparison with anomalous globular clusters and Milky Way satellites
We present a high resolution spectroscopic analysis of 62 red giants in the
Milky Way globular cluster NGC5286. We have determined abundances of
representative light proton-capture, alpha, Fe-peak and neutron-capture element
groups, and combined them with photometry of multiple sequences observed along
the colour-magnitude diagram. Our principal results are: (i) a broad, bimodal
distribution in s-process element abundance ratios, with two main groups, the
s-poor and s-rich groups; (ii) substantial star-to-star Fe variations, with the
s-rich stars having higher Fe, e.g. _s-rich - _s-poor ~
0.2~dex; and (iii) the presence of O-Na-Al (anti-)correlations in both stellar
groups. We have defined a new photometric index, c_{BVI}=(B-V)-(V-I), to
maximise the separation in the colour-magnitude diagram between the two stellar
groups with different Fe and s-element content, and this index is not
significantly affected by variations in light elements (such as the O-Na
anticorrelation). The variations in the overall metallicity present in NGC5286
add this object to the class of "anomalous" GCs. Furthermore, the chemical
abundance pattern of NGC5286 resembles that observed in some of the anomalous
GCs, e.g. M22, NGC1851, M2, and the more extreme Omega Centauri, that also show
internal variations in s-elements, and in light elements within stars with
different Fe and s-elements content. In view of the common variations in
s-elements, we propose the term s-Fe-anomalous GCs to describe this sub-class
of objects. The similarities in chemical abundance ratios between these objects
strongly suggest similar formation and evolution histories, possibly associated

The halo+cluster system of the Galactic globular cluster NGC1851
NGC1851 is surrounded by a stellar component that extends more than ten times
beyond the tidal radius. Although the nature of this stellar structure is not
known, it has been suggested to be a sparse halo of stars or associated with a
stellar stream. We analyse the nature of this intriguing stellar component
surrounding NGC1851 by investigating its radial velocities and chemical
composition, in particular in comparison with those of the central cluster
analysed in a homogeneous manner. In total we observed 23 stars in the halo
with radial velocities consistent with NGC1851, and for 15 of them we infer
[Fe/H] abundances. Our results show that: (i) stars dynamically linked to
NGC1851 are present at least up to ~2.5 tidal radii, supporting the presence of
a halo of stars surrounding the cluster; (ii) apart from the NGC1851 radial
velocity-like stars, our observed velocity distribution agrees with that
expected from Galactic models, suggesting that no other sub-structure (such as
a stream) at different radial velocities is present in our field; (iii) the
chemical abundances for the s-process elements Sr and Ba are consistent with
the s-normal stars observed in NGC1851; (iv) all halo stars have metallicities,
and abundances for the other studied elements Ca, Mg and Cr, consistent with
those exhibited by the cluster. The complexity of the whole NGC1851
cluster+halo system may agree with the scenario of a tidally-disrupted dwarf

Dark Matter signals from Draco and Willman 1: Prospects for MAGIC II and CTA
The next generation of ground-based Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs)
will play an important role in indirect dark matter searches. In this article,
we consider two particularly promising candidate sources for dark matter
annihilation signals, the nearby dwarf galaxies Draco and Willman 1, and study
the prospects of detecting such a signal for the soon-operating MAGIC II
telescope system as well as for the planned installation of CTA, taking special
care of describing the experimental features that affect the detectional
prospects. For the first time in such a study, we fully take into account the
effect of internal bremsstrahlung, which has recently been shown to
considerably enhance, in some cases, the gamma-ray flux at the high energies
where Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes operate, thus leading to significantly
harder annihilation spectra than traditionally considered. While the detection
of the spectral features introduced by internal bremsstrahlung would constitute
a smoking gun signature for dark matter annihilation, we find that for most
models the overall flux still remains at a level that will be challenging to
detect unless one adopts rather (though by no means overly) optimistic
astrophysical assumptions about the distribution of dark matter in the dwarfs.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, minor changes, matches the published version

The double sub-giant branch of NGC 6656 (M22): a chemical characterization
We present an abundance analysis of 101 subgiant branch (SGB) stars in the
globular cluster M22. Using low resolution FLAMES/GIRAFFE spectra we have
determined abundances of the neutron-capture strontium and barium and the light
element carbon. With these data we explore relationships between the observed
SGB photometric split in this cluster and two stellar groups characterized by
different contents of iron, slow neutron-capture process (s-process) elements,
and the alpha element calcium, that we previously discovered in M22's red-giant
stars. We show that the SGB stars correlate in chemical composition and
color-magnitude diagram position: the stars with higher metallicity and
relative s-process abundances define a fainter SGB, while stars with lower
metallicity and s-process content reside on a relatively brighter SGB. This
result has implications for the relative ages of the two stellar groups of M22.
In particular, it is inconsistent with a large spread in ages of the two SGBs.
By accounting for the chemical content of the two stellar groups, isochrone
fitting of the double SGB suggests that their ages are not different by more

No straight lines – young women’s perceptions of their mental health and wellbeing during and after pregnancy: a systematic review and meta-ethnography
Background: Young mothers face mental health challenges during and after pregnancy including increased rates of depression compared to older mothers. While the prevention of teenage pregnancy in countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom has been a focus for policy and research in recent decades, the need to understand young women’s own experiences has been highlighted. The aim of this meta-ethnography was to examine young women’s perceptions of their mental health and wellbeing during and after pregnancy to provide new understandings of those experiences.
Methods: A systematic review and meta-ethnographic synthesis of qualitative research was conducted. Seven databases were systematically searched and forward and backward searching conducted. Papers were included if they were from Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries and explored mental health and wellbeing experiences of young mothers (age under 20 in pregnancy; under 25 at time of research) as a primary research question – or where evidence about mental health and wellbeing from participants was foregrounded. Nineteen papers were identified and the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme checklist for qualitative research used to appraise the evidence. Following the seven-step process of meta-ethnography, key constructs were examined within each study and then translated into one another.
Results: Seven translated themes were identified forming a new line of argument wherein mental health and wellbeing was analysed as relating to individual bodily experiences; tied into past and present relationships; underpinned by economic insecurity and entangled with feelings of societal surveillance. There were ‘no straight lines’ in young women’s experiences, which were more complex than dominant narratives around overcoming adversity suggest.
Conclusions: The synthesis concludes that health and social care professionals need to reflect on the operation of power and stigma in young women’s lives and its impact on wellbeing. It adds to understanding of young women’s mental health and wellbeing during and after pregnancy as located in physical and structural factors rather than individual capacities alone
Probing natural SUSY from stop pair production at the LHC
We consider the natural supersymmetry scenario in the framework of the
R-parity conserving minimal supersymmetric standard model (called natural MSSM)
and examine the observability of stop pair production at the LHC. We first scan
the parameters of this scenario under various experimental constraints,
including the SM-like Higgs boson mass, the indirect limits from precision
electroweak data and B-decays. Then in the allowed parameter space we study the
stop pair production at the LHC followed by the stop decay into a top quark
plus a lightest neutralino or into a bottom quark plus a chargino. From
detailed Monte Carlo simulations of the signals and backgrounds, we find the
two decay modes are complementary to each other in probing the stop pair
production, and the LHC with TeV and 100 luminosity is
capable of discovering the stop predicted in natural MSSM up to 450 GeV. If no
excess events were observed at the LHC, the 95% C.L. exclusion limits of the
stop masses can reach around 537 GeV.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, version accepted by JHE
LAL Regulators SCO0877 and SCO7173 as Pleiotropic Modulators of Phosphate Starvation Response and Actinorhodin Biosynthesis in Streptomyces coelicolor
LAL regulators (Large ATP-binding regulators of the LuxR family) constitute a poorly studied family of transcriptional regulators. Several regulators of this class have been identified in antibiotic and other secondary metabolite gene clusters from actinomycetes, thus they have been considered pathway-specific regulators. In this study we have obtained two disruption mutants of LAL genes from S. coelicolor (Δ0877 and Δ7173). Both mutants were deficient in the production of the polyketide antibiotic actinorhodin, and antibiotic production was restored upon gene complementation of the mutants. The use of whole-genome DNA microarrays and quantitative PCRs enabled the analysis of the transcriptome of both mutants in comparison with the wild type. Our results indicate that the LAL regulators under study act globally affecting various cellular processes, and amongst them the phosphate starvation response and the biosynthesis of the blue-pigmented antibiotic actinorhodin. Both regulators act as negative modulators of the expression of the two-component phoRP system and as positive regulators of actinorhodin biosynthesis. To our knowledge this is the first characterization of LAL regulators with wide implications in Streptomyces metabolism
