    The effects of early years' childcare on child emotional and behavioural difficulties in lone and co-parent family situations

    With targeted childcare initiatives and welfare-to-work programmes policy-makers have sought to address employment activation of lone mothers and negative outcomes for children in lone parent households. The present study examines non-parental childcare use and maternal employment among children living in lone and co-parent family situations at ages three and four and emotional and behavioural difficulties at ages four and five. The results demonstrate that negative outcomes associated with lone motherhood are explained largely by mother's age, education, material circumstances and area deprivation; and that maternal employment does not relieve lone mothers’ disadvantages in a way that alleviates the risks of difficulties to their children. However, in any family constellation, mainly group-based formal pre-school childcare does have a positive impact on child difficulties compared to drawing on informal childcare arrangements as main provider. In addition, and specifically for the difficulties of children in lone mother family situations, any non-parental childcare – formal or informal βˆ’ for at least twenty-five hours per week is beneficial. Study findings support policy agendas which tackle families’ material hardship beyond promoting mothers’ employment, and through investment in formal childcare provision, and also through arrangements allowing lone mothers to divide their weekly load of childcare with another main provider

    Forecasting the long-term deterioration of a cut slope in high-plasticity clay using a numerical model

    This paper details development of a numerical modelling approach that has beenemployed to forecast the long-term performance of a cut slope formed in high plasticity clay. It links hydrological and mechanical behaviour in a coupled saturated and unsaturated model. This is used to investigate the influence of combined dissipation of excavation-generated excess pore water pressures and seasonal weather-driven near-surface cyclic pore water pressures. Deterioration of slope performance is defined in terms of both slope deformations (i.e. service) and factor of safety against shear failure (i.e. safety). Uniquely, the modelling approach has been validated using 16 years of measured pore water pressure data from multiple locations in a London Clay cut slope. Slope deterioration was shown to be a function of both construction-induced pore water pressure dissipation and seasonal weather driven pore water pressure cycles. These lead to both transient and permanent changes in factor of safety due to effective stress variation and mobilisation of post-peak strength reduction over time, respectively, ultimately causing shallow first-time progressive failure. It is demonstrated that this long-term (90 year) deterioration in slope performance is governed by the hydrological processes in the weathered near surface soil zone that forms following slope excavation

    The seasonal ratcheting of clay cut slopes in response to seasonal weather cycles

    Many cut slopes in the UK are in the later stages of their operational life but continue to support road and rail transportation networks. Some of these slopes experienced delayed, deep-seated, first-time failures between 10 and 50 years after construction. However, some continue to seasonally deform and then fail at shallow depth due to the process of seasonal, downslope ratcheting. This paper reviews the evidence for seasonally-induced, downslope ratcheting movements in clay cut slopes, gathered from physical model tests, in-situ monitoring and numerical simulations. The evidence shows that seasonal ratcheting is an increasingly dominant mechanism of slope deformation and ultimate failure for some high-plasticity clay cut slopes as they are exposed to many seasonal weather cycles. The rate of downslope ratcheting depends on the slope age (i.e., number of seasonal weather cycles since construction), the slope geometry (i.e., slope height and angle) and the strain-softening behaviour of the slope material (e.g., as observed in stiff, high-plasticity clays). This rate, when measured, can be used to inform monitoring and management strategies for old, clay cut slopes (e.g., ageing railway and highway cuttings) by identifying the slopes that are prone to seasonally-induced, downslope ratcheting towards the end of their operational life

    Sugar-induced cephalic-phase insulin release is mediated by a T1r2+T1r3-independent taste transduction pathway in mice

    Sensory stimulation from foods elicits cephalic phase responses, which facilitate digestion and nutrient assimilation. One such response, cephalic-phase insulin release (CPIR), enhances glucose tolerance. Little is known about the chemosensory mechanisms that activate CPIR. We studied the contribution of the sweet taste receptor (T1r2+T1r3) to sugar-induced CPIR in C57BL/6 (B6) and T1r3 knockout (KO) mice. First, we measured insulin release and glucose tolerance following oral (i.e., normal ingestion) or intragastric (IG) administration of 2.8 M glucose. Both groups of mice exhibited a CPIR following oral but not IG administration, and this CPIR improved glucose tolerance. Second, we examined the specificity of CPIR. Both mouse groups exhibited a CPIR following oral administration of 1 M glucose and 1 M sucrose but not 1 M fructose or water alone. Third, we studied behavioral attraction to the same three sugar solutions in short-term acceptability tests. B6 mice licked more avidly for the sugar solutions than for water, whereas T1r3 KO mice licked no more for the sugar solutions than for water. Finally, we examined chorda tympani (CT) nerve responses to each of the sugars. Both mouse groups exhibited CT nerve responses to the sugars, although those of B6 mice were stronger. We propose that mice possess two taste transduction pathways for sugars. One mediates behavioral attraction to sugars and requires an intact T1r2+T1r3. The other mediates CPIR but does not require an intact T1r2+T1r3. If the latter taste transduction pathway exists in humans, it should provide opportunities for the development of new treatments for controlling blood sugar

    The effectiveness of different explicit vocabulary-teaching strategies on learners’ retention of technical and academic words

    The effectiveness of explicit instruction, within the context of strategy development in learners, has been widely accepted for several years. However, the methods used within explicit vocabulary instruction are varied and comparatively few studies have directly compared methods. This study investigates the type of instruction (in a visual or written context) as well as the timing of the activity (before or after the main activity). Seventy Arabic learners of English were tested in a 2*2 design. Results showed a positive effect for pre-teaching vocabulary in a visual condition. We conclude that this pre-emptive multimodal approach heightens the learners’ ability to notice vocabulary items thus providing an effective strategy to increase vocabulary intake

    Dietary Proteins as Determinants of Metabolic and Physiologic Functions of the Gastrointestinal Tract

    Dietary proteins elicit a wide range of nutritional and biological functions. Beyond their nutritional role as the source of amino acids for protein synthesis, they are instrumental in the regulation of food intake, glucose and lipid metabolism, blood pressure, bone metabolism and immune function. The interaction of dietary proteins and their products of digestion with the regulatory functions of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract plays a dominant role in determining the physiological properties of proteins. The site of interaction is widespread, from the oral cavity to the colon. The characteristics of proteins that influence their interaction with the GI tract in a source-dependent manner include their physico-chemical properties, their amino acid composition and sequence, their bioactive peptides, their digestion kinetics and also the non-protein bioactive components conjugated with them. Within the GI tract, these products affect several regulatory functions by interacting with receptors releasing hormones, affecting stomach emptying and GI transport and absorption, transmitting neural signals to the brain, and modifying the microflora. This review discusses the interaction of dietary proteins during digestion and absorption with the physiological and metabolic functions of the GI tract, and illustrates the importance of this interaction in the regulation of amino acid, glucose, lipid metabolism, and food intake

    Young people's mental health in context: Comparing life in the city and small communities in Siberia

    The study compares young people's mental health in the major Siberian city of Novosibirsk with small communities of the surrounding region, at the end of the statutory period of secondary education. Data are drawn from a school-based questionnaire survey of ninth graders and semi-structured interviews. In line with the findings of international comparative studies, general health profiles are not good by Western standards, but extending such findings, general health appears even poorer in small communities and is differentiated further by the rural household's impoverished socio-economic circumstances. However, despite poorer general health among rural youth, the study finds the opposite for more specific profiles of mental health, which are worse among city youth. In this, distinctive social factors are associated with mental health differently in the large city and small communities of the region. In the relatively affluent city of Novosibirsk, self-worth and depression are differentiated by family background and engagement with the education system. By contrast, in small communities social capital associated with family support and kin-based networks become important resources instead.     Lifestyle, health and social class in adolescence

    The paper considers mechanisms for indirect health selection in adolescence, as part of the explanation for health inequalities between social groups. Aspects of adolescent lifestyles are identified as potentially important factors for the production of class based differences in adult health status. Survey data from a Scottish longitudinal study of adolescent socialization and lifestyles are utilized in order to locate such health lifestyle factors within the wider contexts of the individual's personal and social environment at this stage of the life cycle. Relationships and attitudes to family, school and peers in middle adolescence at 15-16 years of age are first examined, and distinctive patterns of integration within these contexts are identified. The inter-connections between these broader aspects of lifestyle, social class and individual health behaviours are then examined. Mid-adolescent patterns of social integration are found to have a clear structural basis, and most importantly, they anticipate social position in later adolescence at 17-18 years of age. It is also found that such patterns of integration into the family, peer and school contexts are linked to subsequent health related behaviours and to self assessed health in later adolescence, and that these links are independent of the young person's social class background. Thus, we conclude that behavioural-cultural lifestyle factors, when these are located within a broader social context, provide a clear and plausible mechanism for indirect health selection in adolescence.health inequalities social class adolescence lifestyle
