    Decoherence induced by a phase-damping reservoir

    A phase damping reservoir composed by NN-bosons coupled to a system of interest through a cross-Kerr interaction is proposed and its effects on quantum superpo sitions are investigated. By means of analytical calculations we show that: i-) the reservoir induces a Gaussian decay of quantum coherences, and ii-) the inher ent incommensurate character of the spectral distribution yields irreversibility . A state-independent decoherence time and a master equation are both derived an alytically. These results, which have been extended for the thermodynamic limit, show that nondissipative decoherence can be suitably contemplated within the EI D approach. Finally, it is shown that the same mechanism yielding decoherence ar e also responsible for inducing dynamical disentanglement.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Macroscopic equations for the adiabatic piston

    A simplified version of a classical problem in thermodynamics -- the adiabatic piston -- is discussed in the framework of kinetic theory. We consider the limit of gases whose relaxation time is extremely fast so that the gases contained on the left and right chambers of the piston are always in equilibrium (that is the molecules are uniformly distributed and their velocities obey the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution) after any collision with the piston. Then by using kinetic theory we derive the collision statistics from which we obtain a set of ordinary differential equations for the evolution of the macroscopic observables (namely the piston average velocity and position, the velocity variance and the temperatures of the two compartments). The dynamics of these equations is compared with simulations of an ideal gas and a microscopic model of gas settled to verify the assumptions used in the derivation. We show that the equations predict an evolution for the macroscopic variables which catches the basic features of the problem. The results here presented recover those derived, using a different approach, by Gruber, Pache and Lesne in J. Stat.     Correlation function and generalized master equation of arbitrary age

    We study a two-state statistical process with a non-Poisson distribution of sojourn times. In accordance with earlier work, we find that this process is characterized by aging and we study three different ways to define the correlation function of arbitrary age of the corresponding dichotomous fluctuation based respectively on the Generalized Master Equation formalism, on a Liouville-like approach and on a trajectory perspective.Comment: 11 pages, 1figur

    Estudo sobre a viabilidade da produção de linhagens de milho por meio de cultura de anteras.

    Este trabalho foi conduzido com os objetivos de estabelecer protocolos para o cultivo de anteras de milho, in vitro, visando a producao de linhagens; e avaliar a possibilidade da incorporacao dessa tecnica em um programa de melhoramento. Foram testados 37 genotipos de milho. A metodologia utilizada inclui a determinacao do estadio de desenvolvimento dos microsporos, mediante coloracao com carmim propionico; um teste de viabilidade de microsporos, pela reacao da fluorescencia enzimaticamente induzida; o pre-tratamento de pendoes a 8,0 C; o plaqueamento das anteras, em posicao lateral, sobre tres tipos de meio; e a incubacao das placas no escuro ou sob fotoperiodo de 16 horas, a 26 +/- 1C. Para a regeneracao de plantas, os calos foram transferidos para um meio sem reguladores de crescimento. Embora os microsporos apresentassem boa taxa de viabilidade quando plaqueados, os materiais testados mostraram-se pouco responsivos, havendo formacao de calos a partir de tres genotipos apenas e regeneracao de plantas a partir de apenas uma linhagem. Diante do pequeno sucesso obtido com os materiais testados e considerando que, em um programa de melhoramento de milho, ha necessidade da producao de grande numero de linhagens, conclui-se que a cultura de anteras ainda nao pode ser vista como tecnica auxiliar rotineira, pelo menos com a metodologia de cultivo e de regeneracao de plantas, atualmente disponivel, para o germoplasma amostrado

    Are inner disc misalignments common? ALMA reveals an isotropic outer disc inclination distribution for young dipper stars

    Dippers are a common class of young variable star exhibiting day-long dimmings with depths of up to several tens of per cent. A standard explanation is that dippers host nearly edge-on (id ≈ 70°) protoplanetary discs that allow close-in (10 au) disc resolved by ALMA and that inner disc misalignments may be common during the protoplanetary phase. More than one mechanism may contribute to the dipper phenomenon, including accretion-driven warps and ‘broken’ discs caused by inclined (sub-)stellar or planetary companions

    The Neuropteris ovata frond and its cyclopteroids: Micromorphology-spectrochemistry-fractal taxonomy. Propositions for restructuring and taxonomy (Pennsylvanian, Canada)

    The primary study material consists of the 65-cm frond Neuropteris ovata (Hoffmann) var. simonii, associate petiole with organically attached cyclopteroid leaflets and trunk. Ancillary N. ovata material is used, all from the Asturian-Cantabrian strata of the Sydney Coalfield, Canada. This material is appropriate for the objective of the study to present an ovata-frond Aufbau in terms of micromorphology coupled with chemistry using an holistic sampling design (co-ordinating epidermal microscopy with chemistry per sample location). Chemical analyses were obtained by the reliable FTIR technique (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) and interpreted via chemometrics by methods of principal component analysis. Fractal geometry is introduced as a promising taxonomic parameter. The main conclusions include that the N. ovata plant can be characterized by three distinct epidermal structures: (1) rectangular elongate (trunk and petiole), (2) elongate (rachides of three orders), and (3) undulate (pinnule), which to a certain extent agrees with the chemistry of the frond Aufbau. The frond was also complex - architecturally, histologically, physiologically, chemically and autecologically. It was photosynthetic, had secretory organs (implying a characteristic plant aroma), supporting rodlets, divers epicuticular features, and a distinct chemical composition/structure. The frond was likely 4 m long with complex-pinnate cyclopteroid leaflets, fimbriate or entire-margined, below and above the main bifurcation, which begs the question of cyclopteroid definition and function. The overall results will be beneficial to taxonomy/systematics, and guide pteridospermous reconstruction into a new paradigm.Fil: Zodrow, E. L..     U.S. Greenhouse Gas Cap-and-Trade Proposals: Application of a Forward-Looking Computable General Equilibrium Model

    Abstract in HTML and technical report in PDF available on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change website (http://mit.edu/globalchange/www/).We develop a forward-looking version of the MIT Emissions Prediction and Policy Analysis (EPPA) model, and apply it to examine the economic implications of proposals in the U.S. Congress to limit greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We find that the abatement path and CO2-equivalent (CO2-e) price in the forward-looking model are quite similar to that of the recursive model, implying that the simulation of banking behavior in the recursive model by forcing the CO2-e price to rise at the discount rate approximates fairly well the banking result obtained with the forward-looking model. We find, however, that shocks in consumption path are smoothed out in the forward-looking model and that the lifetime welfare cost of GHG policy is lower than in the recursive model, results we would expect to find given that the forward-looking model can fully optimize over time. The forward-looking model allows us to explore issues for which it is uniquely well-suited, including revenue-recycling, early action crediting, and the role of a technology backstop. We find (1) capital tax recycling to be more welfare-cost reducing than labor tax recycling because of its long term effect on economic growth, (2) potentially substantial incentives for early action credits relative to emission levels in years after a policy is announced but before it is implemented that, however, when spread over the full horizon of the policy do not have a substantial effect on lifetime welfare cost or the CO2-e price, and (3) strong effects on estimates of near-term welfare costs depending on exactly how a backstop technology is represented, indicating the problematic aspects of focusing on short-term welfare costs in a forward-looking model unless there is some confidence that the backstop technology is realistically represented.This study received support from the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change, which is funded by a consortium of government, industry and foundation sponsors

    Assessment of U.S. Cap-and-Trade Proposals

    The MIT Emissions Prediction and Policy Analysis model is applied to synthetic policies that match key attributes of a set of cap-and-trade proposals being considered by the U.S. Congress in spring 2007. The bills fall into two groups: one specifies emissions reductions of 50% to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050; the other establishes a tightening target for emissions intensity and stipulates a time-path for a "safety valve" limit on the emission price that approximately stabilizes U.S. emissions at the 2008 level. Initial period prices are estimated between 7and7 and 50 per ton CO2-e with these prices rising by a factor of four by 2050. Welfare costs vary from near zero to less than 0.5% at the start, rising in the most stringent case to near 2% in 2050. If allowances were auctioned these proposals could produce revenue between 100billionand100 billion and 500 billion per year depending on the case. Outcomes from U.S. policies depend on mitigation effort abroads, and simulations are provided to illuminate terms-of-trade effects that influence the emissions prices and welfare effects, and even the environmental effectiveness, of U.S. actions. Sensitivity tests also are provided of several of key design features. Finally, the U.S. proposals, and the assumptions about effort elsewhere, are extended to 2100 to allow exploration of the potential role of these bills in the longer-term challenge of reducing climate change risk. Simulations show that the 50% to 80% targets are consistent with global goals of atmospheric stabilization at 450 to 550 ppmv CO2 but only if other nations, including the developing countries, follow suit.

    Angular momentum effects in Michelson-Morley type experiments

    The effect of the angular momentum density of a gravitational source on the times of flight of light rays in an interferometer is analyzed. The calculation is made imagining that the interferometer is at the equator of the gravity source and, as long as possible, the metric, provided it is stationary and axisymmetric, is not approximated. Finally, in order to evaluate the size of the effect in the case of the Earth a weak field approximation is introduced. For laboratory scales and non-geodesic paths the correction turns out to be comparable with the sensitivity expected in gravitational waves interferometric detectors, whereas it drops under the threshold of detectability when using free (geodesic) light rays.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX; more about the detection technique, references added; accepted for publication in GR
