Development of strain tolerant thermal barrier coating systems, tasks 1 - 3
Insulating ceramic thermal barrier coatings can reduce gas turbine airfoil metal temperatures as much as 170 C (about 300 F), providing fuel efficiency improvements greater than one percent and durability improvements of 2 to 3X. The objective was to increase the spalling resistance of zirconia based ceramic turbine coatings. To accomplish this, two baseline and 30 candidate duplex (layered MCrAlY/zirconia based ceramic) coatings were iteratively evaluated microstructurally and in four series of laboratory burner rig tests. This led to the selection of two candidate optimized 0.25 mm (0.010 inch) thick plasma sprayed partially stabilized zirconia ceramics containing six weight percent yttria and applied with two different sets of process parameters over a 0.13 mm (0.005 inch) thick low pressure chamber sprayed MCrAlY bond coat. Both of these coatings demonstrated at least 3X laboratory cyclic spalling life improvement over the baseline systems, as well as cyclic oxidation life equivalent to 15,000 commercial engine flight hours
Psychedelic intimacy: altered states of consciousness in romantic relationships
Objective: Engaging in practices of intimacy meant to develop and sustain intimacy can be beneficial for couples. Psychoactive substances such as 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) have shown to facilitate bonding within couples and it is hypothesised that classic psychedelics, due to their property to increase prosocial behaviours, can similarly promote interactional intimacy. This study explores shared experiences of altered states of consciousness within romantic couples and their impact on intimacy in relationships.
Participants: Twelve participants (six couples) between 19 and 29 years of age who had used psychedelics with their current partner were recruited.
Method: Qualitative data was gathered via simultaneous interviews with both members of a couple. The semi-structured interviews featured an in-depth exploration of multiple shared psychedelic experiences. Reflexive thematic analysis was employed to analyse the resulting transcripts.
Results: Three themes with subsequent subthemes were identified, portraying couples’ experiences during psychedelic-induced altered states of consciousness: navigating anxiety (subthemes: novelty, preparation, shifting environment, and calming presence), reshaping practices (subthemes: excessive worrying, spirited discussions, and straight talking), and encountering bliss (subthemes: meeting the unexpected, the beauty around us, leaving the everyday behind, and breaking through).
Conclusions: Couples’ experiences with classic psychedelics align with criteria for interactional intimacy (i.e., self-exposure, positive involvement, and shared understanding), but their distinct nature warrants a novel definition of psychedelic intimacy. The unique pair bonding during shared psychedelic experiences could be utilized by psychedelic-assisted couples therapy

Project report: Evaluation of two post-graduate pre-registration nursing modules ‘Finding the Blend’: An evaluation of the balance between online and face to face learning and teaching in a blended curriculum
In the School of Health Sciences we have adopted a blended learning approach for the delivery of the current nursing curriculum. It is intended to enhance and extend the learning opportunities for students.
This approach makes full use of available learning technologies whilst recognising the value of face to face interaction and facilitation. It fosters supportive and collaborative learning networks amongst students and encourages deep learning by engaging students in incremental learning tasks and, student directed learning. It also enables students to self- pace their learning.
As our nursing programme is being implemented we have engaged both academics and students in a systematic and iterative evaluation of the blended aspects of the programme.
Our aims were to:
a) Investigate how students experience the current balance between their classroom and online activities
b) Evaluate the effectiveness of the range of activities, both online and face to face
c) Identify points of good practice based on project evaluation and available literature.
In this paper we share the results of our evaluation and highlight key messages for further development and improvement of designing the ‘blend’. Our recommendations may be beneficial for design teams who may need to engage in similar projects in the future
Analysis of the Copenhagen Accord pledges and its global climatic impacts‚ a snapshot of dissonant ambitions
This analysis of the Copenhagen Accord evaluates emission reduction pledges by individual countries against the Accord's climate-related objectives. Probabilistic estimates of the climatic consequences for a set of resulting multi-gas scenarios over the 21st century are calculated with a reduced complexity climate model, yielding global temperature increase and atmospheric CO2 and CO2-equivalent concentrations. Provisions for banked surplus emission allowances and credits from land use, land-use change and forestry are assessed and are shown to have the potential to lead to significant deterioration of the ambition levels implied by the pledges in 2020. This analysis demonstrates that the Copenhagen Accord and the pledges made under it represent a set of dissonant ambitions. The ambition level of the current pledges for 2020 and the lack of commonly agreed goals for 2050 place in peril the Accord's own ambition: to limit global warming to below 2 °C, and even more so for 1.5 °C, which is referenced in the Accord in association with potentially strengthening the long-term temperature goal in 2015. Due to the limited level of ambition by 2020, the ability to limit emissions afterwards to pathways consistent with either the 2 or 1.5 °C goal is likely to become less feasibl
Depth of maximum of extensive air showers and cosmic ray composition above 10**17 eV in the geometrical multichain model of nuclei interactions
The depth of maximum for extensive air showers measured by Fly's Eye and
Yakutsk experiments is analysed. The analysis depends on the hadronic
interaction model that determine cascade development. The novel feature found
in the cascading process for nucleus-nucleus collisions at high energies leads
to a fast increase of the inelasticity in heavy nuclei interactions without
changing the hadron-hadron interaction properties. This effects the development
of the extensive air showers initiated by heavy primaries. The detailed
calculations were performed using the recently developed geometrical multichain
model and the CORSIKA simulation code. The agreement with data on average depth
of shower maxima, the falling slope of the maxima distribution, and these
distribution widths are found for the very heavy cosmic ray mass spectrum
(slightly heavier than expected in the diffusion model at about 3*10**17 eV and
similar to the Fly's Eye composition at this energy).Comment: 11pp (9 eps figures
