    Identification of Boundary Conditions Using Natural Frequencies

    The present investigation concerns a disc of varying thickness of whose flexural stiffness DD varies with the radius rr according to the law D=D0rmD=D_0 r^m, where D0D_0 and mm are constants. The problem of finding boundary conditions for fastening this disc, which are inaccessible to direct observation, from the natural frequencies of its axisymmetric flexural oscillations is considered. The problem in question belongs to the class of inverse problems and is a completely natural problem of identification of boundary conditions. The search for the unknown conditions for fastening the disc is equivalent to finding the span of the vectors of unknown conditions coefficients. It is shown that this inverse problem is well posed. Two theorems on the uniqueness and a theorem on stability of the solution of this problem are proved, and a method for establishing the unknown conditions for fastening the disc to the walls is indicated. An approximate formula for determining the unknown conditions is obtained using first three natural frequencies. The method of approximate calculation of unknown boundary conditions is explained with the help of three examples of different cases for the fastening the disc (rigid clamping, free support, elastic fixing).     How to find an attractive solution to the liar paradox

    The general thesis of this paper is that metasemantic theories can play a central role in determining the correct solution to the liar paradox. I argue for the thesis by providing a specific example. I show how Lewis’s reference-magnetic metasemantic theory may decide between two of the most influential solutions to the liar paradox: Kripke’s minimal fixed point theory of truth and Gupta and Belnap’s revision theory of truth. In particular, I suggest that Lewis’s metasemantic theory favours Kripke’s solution to the paradox over Gupta and Belnap’s. I then sketch how other standard criteria for assessing solutions to the liar paradox, such as whether a solution faces a so-called revenge paradox, fit into this picture. While the discussion of the specific example is itself important, the underlying lesson is that we have an unused strategy for resolving one of the hardest problems in philosophy

    Smoothing a rugged protein folding landscape by sequence-based redesign

    The rugged folding landscapes of functional proteins puts them at risk of misfolding and aggregation. Serine protease inhibitors, or serpins, are paradigms for this delicate balance between function and misfolding. Serpins exist in a metastable state that undergoes a major conformational change in order to inhibit proteases. However, conformational labiality of the native serpin fold renders them susceptible to misfolding, which underlies misfolding diseases such as α1\alpha_1-antitrypsin deficiency. To investigate how serpins balance function and folding, we used consensus design to create conserpin\textit{conserpin}, a synthetic serpin that folds reversibly, is functional, thermostable, and polymerization resistant. Characterization of its structure, folding and dynamics suggest that consensus design has remodeled the folding landscape to reconcile competing requirements for stability and function. This approach may offer general benefits for engineering functional proteins that have risky folding landscapes, including the removal of aggregation-prone intermediates, and modifying scaffolds for use as protein therapeutics.BTP is a Medical Research Council Career Development Fellow.     Mistreatment of university students most common during medical studies

    BACKGROUND: This study concerns the occurrence of various forms of mistreatment by staff and fellow students experienced by students in the Faculty of Medicine and the other four faculties of the University of Oulu, Finland. METHODS: A questionnaire with 51 questions on various forms of physical and psychological mistreatment was distributed to 665 students (451 females) after lectures or examinations and filled in and returned. The results were analysed by gender and faculty. The differences between the males and females were assessed statistically using a test for the equality of two proportions. An exact two-sided P value was calculated using a mid-P approach to Fisher's exact test (the null hypothesis being that there is no difference between the two proportions). RESULTS: About half of the students answering the questionnaire had experienced some form of mistreatment by staff during their university studies, most commonly humiliation and contempt (40%), negative or disparaging remarks (34%), yelling and shouting (23%), sexual harassment and other forms of gender-based mistreatment (17%) and tasks assigned as punishment (13%). The students in the Faculty of Medicine reported every form of mistreatment more commonly than those in the Faculties of Humanities, Education, Science and Technology. Experiences of mistreatment varied, but clear messages regarding its patterns were to be found in each faculty. Female students reported more instances of mistreatment than males and were more disturbed by them. Professors, lecturers and other staff in particular mistreated female students more than they mistreated males. About half of the respondents reported some form of mistreatment by their fellow students. CONCLUSION: Students in the Faculty of Medicine reported the greatest amount of mistreatment. If a faculty mistreats its students, its success in the main tasks of universities, research, teaching and learning, will be threatened. The results challenge university teachers, especially in faculties of medicine, to evaluate their ability to create a safe environment conducive to learning
