Areas of natural occurrence of melipona scutellaris Latreille, 1811(Hymenoptera: Apidae) in the state of Bahia, Brazil.
The bee Melipona scutellaris is considered the reared meliponine species with the largest distribution in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, with records from the state of Rio Grande do Norte down to the state of Bahia. Considering the importance of this species in the generation of income for family agriculture and in the preservation of areas with natural vegetation, this study aimed at providing knowledge on the distribution of natural colonies of M. scutellaris in the state of Bahia. Literature information, interviews with stinglessbee beekeepers, and expeditions were conducted to confirm the natural occurrence of the species. A total of 102 municipalities showed records for M. scutellaris, whose occurrence was observed in areas ranging from sea level up to 1,200-meter height. The occurrence of this species in the state of Bahia is considered to be restricted to municipalities on the coastal area and the Chapada Diamantina with its rainforests. Geographic coordinates, elevation, climate and vegetation data were obtained, which allowed a map to be prepared for the area of occurrence in order to support conservation and management policies for the species
A role for proteolytic bacteria in the exacerbation of influenza virus has been shown in natural hosts such as pigs and humans. Four hundred seven samples were collected from the respiratory tract of individuals presenting clinical manifestations, during influenza season (2003-2005) in São Paulo City. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of determined bacteria co-infecting virus in human respiratory tract. Tests, such as bacteriological, immunofluorescence (IF), RT/PCR and hemagglutination (HA) were used for bacterial and viral investigation. Thirty seven (9.09%) positive for influenza virus were screened by IF. The RT/PCR confirmed the presence of influenza virus in these samples. Bacterial and agar casein tests demonstrated that 18 (48.64%) individuals were infected with proteolytic bacteria such as Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp. and Pseudomonas spp. Among these samples, 13 (35.13%) were co-infected with influenza A virus. Influenza type B, co-infecting bacteria were found in five (13.51%) samples. In vitro the S. aureus protease increased the influenza HA titer after contact for 30 min at 25 ºC. Results revealed the occurrence of co-infection with proteolytic bacteria and influenza in the evaluated individuals. This finding corroborates that virus versus bacteria synergism could be able to potentiate respiratory infection, increasing damage to hosts.O papel da bactéria proteolítica na exacerbação do vírus influenza tem sido demonstrado em hospedeiros naturais como porcos e humanos.

Anatomical aspects of the embryo and initial development of Oenocarpus minor Mart: a palm tree from the Amazon
The anatomy of the embryo and the initial germination phase of O. minor seeds are examined here. Ripe fruits were collected from five individuals, the pulp removed, and the seeds sown in beds with sandy substrate in a greenhouse with 50% shade. Germination follow-up was made by collecting different stages of development. The anatomical study done according to usual techniques of light microscopy. The embryo is capitate and occupies a central position in the basal region of the seed. The embryogenic axis is located in the proximal region in a position that is oblique to the cotyledon axis. The cotyledon is formed by parenchymatous, procambial and protodermic tissue. The vascular bundles lie along the peripheral zone of the distal region to the embryogenicaxis. After 14 days, the primary rootemerges; after 21 days, the first cotyledon sheath and after 35 days, the second cotyledon sheath, and the seedling emerges above the substrate. Germination is of the ligule adjacent type. A germinação é do tipo adjacente ligular
Observation of the Decay Ξb- →pK-K-
Decays of the Ξb- and Ωb- baryons to the charmless final states ph-h′-, where h(′) denotes a kaon or pion, are searched for with the LHCb detector. The analysis is based on a sample of proton-proton collision data collected at center-of-mass energies s=7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb-1. The decay Ξb-→pK-K- is observed with a significance of 8.7 standard deviations, and evidence at the level of 3.4 standard deviations is found for the Ξb-→pK-π- decay. Results are reported, relative to the B-→K+K-K- normalization channel, for the products of branching fractions and b-hadron production fractions. The branching fractions of Ξb-→pK-π- and Ξb-→pπ-π- relative to Ξb-→pK-K- decays are also measured
