Testing complete positivity
We study the modified dynamical evolution of the neutral kaon system under
the condition of complete positivity. The accuracy of the data from planned
future experiments is expected to be sufficiently precise to test such a

Ear, nose and throat (ENT) involvement in zoonotic diseases: a systematic review
INTRODUCTION: Zoonoses are infections transmitted from animal to man, either directly (through direct contact or contact with animal products) or indirectly (through an intermediate vector, such as an arthropod). The causative agents include bacteria, parasites, viruses, and fungi. The purpose of this review is to make an accurate examination of all zoonotic diseases that can be responsible of ear, nose, and throat (ENT) involvement.
METHODOLOGY:
A PubMed search was performed combining the terms (otorhinolaryngology OR rhinology OR laryngology OR otology OR mastoiditis OR otitis OR sinusitis OR laryngitis OR rhinitis OR pharyngitis OR epiglottitis OR dysphonia OR ear OR larynx OR nose OR pharynx) with each one of the etiological agents of zoonoses for the period between January 1997 and August 2012 without language restrictions.
RESULTS:
A total of 164 articles were selected and examined. Larynx was the most commonly involved ENT organ, followed by oral cavity, pharynx, and neck. Bacteria were the most representative microorganisms involved. Nose and major salivary glands were affected most frequently by protozoa; paranasal sinus, oral cavity, ear, neck, nerves and upper airway by bacteria; and larynx by fungi.
CONCLUSIONS:
ENT symptoms and signs may be present in many zoonotic diseases, some of which are also present in industrialized countries. Most zoonotic diseases are not commonly encountered by ENT specialists. Appreciation of the possible occurrence of these diseases is important for a correct microbiological approach, which often requires special culture media and diagnostic techniques
Superconducting nanowire photon number resolving detector at telecom wavelength
The optical-to-electrical conversion, which is the basis of optical
detectors, can be linear or nonlinear. When high sensitivities are needed
single-photon detectors (SPDs) are used, which operate in a strongly nonlinear
mode, their response being independent of the photon number. Nevertheless,
photon-number resolving (PNR) detectors are needed, particularly in quantum
optics, where n-photon states are routinely produced. In quantum communication,
the PNR functionality is key to many protocols for establishing, swapping and
measuring entanglement, and can be used to detect photon-number-splitting
attacks. A linear detector with single-photon sensitivity can also be used for
measuring a temporal waveform at extremely low light levels, e.g. in
long-distance optical communications, fluorescence spectroscopy, optical
time-domain reflectometry. We demonstrate here a PNR detector based on parallel
superconducting nanowires and capable of counting up to 4 photons at
telecommunication wavelengths, with ultralow dark count rate and high counting
frequency
Effect of Mycoplasma agalactiae mastitis on milk production and composition in Valle dell Belice dairy sheep
Contagious agalactia (CA), a disease caused by Mycoplasma agalactiae and other pathogenic mycoplasmas, is a well-known multietiological syndrome affecting dairy breeds of sheep and goats in the Mediterranean basin. The aim of this work was to study the effect on milk production and composition of mastitis caused by M. agalactiae in Valle del Belice dairy sheep. All ewes were manually milked twice daily and the milk from both daily milking was analysed for milk composition and somatic cell counts. Moreover the morning milk samples were collected aseptically from each animal for bacteriological analyses. A mixed linear model was utilised to consider milk production and composition between animals infected by CA and healthy animals. After bacteriological investigation using both cultural and molecular methods, 37 ewes were found to be infected by M. agalactiae while 50 uninfected ewes were randomly selected from the same herds to compare milk production and composition between infected and healthy animals. Statistical analyses showed that the infection with M. agalactiae had a significant effect on yield and some milk components. In particular, infected ewes showed lower milk production with lower lactose content and higher somatic cell counts. The implementation of disease control programmes based on rapid laboratory diagnosis and modern control methods is desirable for Mediterranean endemic areas.Highlights Contagious agalactia is caused by M. agalactiae and affects small ruminant dairy farms in the Mediterranean basin. The use of new psychoactive substances (NPS) in young people and their role in mental health care: a systematic review

NPS intake has been associated with health-related risks, and especially so for vulnerable populations such as the youngsters. Currently, most knowledge on the NPS health effects is learnt from both a range of usersâ reports, made available through the psychonautsâ web fora, and from the few published, related toxicity, clinical observations. Areas covered: This paper aims at providing an overview of NPS effects on youngstersâ mental health, whilst performing a systematic review of the current related knowledge. Expert opinion: NPS consumption poses serious health risks, due to both a range of unpredictable clinical pharmacological properties and the typical concomitant use of other psychoactive molecules; overall, this can lead to near misses and fatalities. In comparison with adults, the central nervous system of children/adolescents may be more vulnerable to the activity of these molecules, hence raising even further the levels of health-related concerns. More research is needed to provide evidence of both short- and long-term effects of NPS, related health risks, and their addiction potential.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
A variable absorption feature in the X-ray spectrum of a magnetar
Soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) and anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) are slowly
rotating, isolated neutron stars that sporadically undergo episodes of
long-term flux enhancement (outbursts) generally accompanied by the emission of
short bursts of hard X-rays. This behaviour can be understood in the magnetar
model, according to which these sources are mainly powered by their own
magnetic energy. This is supported by the fact that the magnetic fields
inferred from several observed properties of AXPs and SGRs are greater than -
or at the high end of the range of - those of radio pulsars. In the peculiar
case of SGR 0418+5729, a weak dipole magnetic moment is derived from its timing
parameters, whereas a strong field has been proposed to reside in the stellar
interior and in multipole components on the surface. Here we show that the
X-ray spectrum of SGR 0418+5729 has an absorption line, the properties of which
depend strongly on the star's rotational phase. This line is interpreted as a
proton cyclotron feature and its energy implies a magnetic field ranging from

Use of partial least squares regression to impute SNP genotypes in Italian Cattle breeds
Background
The objective of the present study was to test the ability of the partial least squares regression technique to impute genotypes from low density single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) panels i.e. 3K or 7K to a high density panel with 50K SNP. No pedigree information was used.
Methods
Data consisted of 2093 Holstein, 749 Brown Swiss and 479 Simmental bulls genotyped with the Illumina 50K Beadchip. First, a single-breed approach was applied by using only data from Holstein animals. Then, to enlarge the training population, data from the three breeds were combined and a multi-breed analysis was performed. Accuracies of genotypes imputed using the partial least squares regression method were compared with those obtained by using the Beagle software. The impact of genotype imputation on breeding value prediction was evaluated for milk yield, fat content and protein content.
Results
In the single-breed approach, the accuracy of imputation using partial least squares regression was around 90 and 94% for the 3K and 7K platforms, respectively; corresponding accuracies obtained with Beagle were around 85% and 90%. Moreover, computing time required by the partial least squares regression method was on average around 10 times lower than computing time required by Beagle. Using the partial least squares regression method in the multi-breed resulted in lower imputation accuracies than using single-breed data. The impact of the SNP-genotype imputation on the accuracy of direct genomic breeding values was small. The correlation between estimates of genetic merit obtained by using imputed versus actual genotypes was around 0.96 for the 7K chip.
Conclusions
Results of the present work suggested that the partial least squares regression imputation method could be useful to impute SNP genotypes when pedigree information is not available
Risk Factors for Tremor in a Population of Patients with Severe Mental Illness:An 18-year Prospective Study in a Geographically Representative Sample (The Curacao Extrapyramidal Syndromes Study XI)
BACKGROUND: The aim was to assess incidence, prevalence and risk factors of medication-induced tremor in African-Caribbean patients with severe mental illness (SMI).METHOD: A prospective study of SMI patients receiving care from the only mental health service of the previous Dutch Antilles. Eight clinical assessments, over 18 years, focused on movement disorders, medication use, and resting tremor (RT) and (postural) action tremor (AT). Risk factors were modeled with logistic regression for both current (having) tremor and for tremor at the next time point (developing). The latter used a time-lagged design to assess medication changes prior to a change in tremor state.RESULTS: Yearly tremor incidence rate was 2.9% and mean tremor point prevalence was 18.4%. Over a third of patients displayed tremor during the study. Of the patients, 5.2% had AT with 25% of cases persisting to the next time point, while 17.1% of patients had RT of which 65.3% persisted. When tremor data were examined in individual patients, they often had periods of tremor interspersed with periods of no tremor. Having RT was associated with age (OR=1.07 per year; 95% confidence interval 1.03-1.11), sex (OR=0.17 for males; 0.05-0.78), cocaine use (OR=10.53; 2.22-49.94), dyskinesia (OR=0.90; 0.83-0.97), and bradykinesia (OR=1.16; 1.09-1.22). Developing RT was strongly associated with previous measurement RT (OR=9.86; 3.80-25.63), with previous RT severity (OR=1.22; 1.05-1.41), and higher anticholinergic load (OR= 1.24; 1.08-1.43). Having AT was associated with tremor-inducing medication (OR= 4.54; 1.90-10.86), cocaine use (OR=14.04; 2.38-82.96), and bradykinesia (OR=1.07; 1.01-1.15). Developing AT was associated with, previous AT severity (OR=2.62 per unit; 1.64-4.18) and tremor reducing medication (OR=0.08; 0.01-0.55).CONCLUSIONS: Long-stay SMI patients are prone to developing tremors, which show a relapsing-remitting course. Differentiation between RT and AT is important as risk factors differ and they require different prevention and treatment strategies.</p

Flavor of quiver-like realizations of effective supersymmetry
We present a class of supersymmetric models which address the flavor puzzle
and have an inverted hierarchy of sfermions. Their construction involves
quiver-like models with link fields in generic representations. The magnitude
of Standard-Model parameters is obtained naturally and a relatively heavy Higgs
boson is allowed without fine tuning. Collider signatures of such models are
