Evaluating a sensor of skin conductance to assess dental anxiety
Tese de mestrado, Bioinformática e Biologia Computacional (Bioinformática), Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências, 2015The anxiety related problems that adult population experience, are a common issue in Dental Practice. To overcome these problems it would be helpful to have an objective measure of the current anxiety of the patient. With this information, it should be possible to link the measured anxiety to an automated system that could distract the patient by altering the surrounding environment, i.e. Ambient Intelligence. This project consisted in measuring the skin conductance signal and correlating the responses related with documented dental stressful procedures. This was executed in a real clinical environment. Dental anxiety was assessed in over 70 patients with a 3 question survey using the Likert scale. Each answer was registered together with the level of skin conductance measured with a sensor placed in the patient fingers. The results showed a significant association between the dental anxiety score on two of the questions and the quantified skin electrodermal response. These findings aim to help design a future system based on ambient intelligence to distract and reduce dental anxiety during treatment.
Botrytis Cinerea mating types distribution and NEP1 protein sequence analysis
Mestrado em Engenharia Agronómica - Instituto Superior de AgronomiaBotrytis cinerea [teleomorph: Botryotinia fuckeliana] is a heterothallic filamentous
plant pathogenic Ascomycete with over two hundred different hosts, and its control at
the crop level is still very difficult to achieve. Sexual reproduction as an active part in
the fungus dispersal and variability has been underestimated until recent years.
Research leading to more insight into the MAT locus and the fundamental principles of
the mating process can prompt new strategies for B. cinerea control. During the
B. cinerea infection process, phytotoxic proteins such as NEP1 are produced. Their
function is yet to be unraveled, but it was postulated that they might play a role in
speciation in the genus Botrytis.
This report describes a mating type screening of a population of 80 field isolates of
B. cinerea. Findings indicate a typical 1:1 Mendelian distribution of the MAT loci, and
one strain with both MAT genes is reported. A scan of the MAT locus suggests the
absence of the MAT1-1 locus in dual mating strains. Furthermore, Southern blotting
demonstrates for the first time the possible presence of a complete MAT1-1 locus in a
dual mating strain, instead of the predicted incomplete MAT1-1 locus (dMAT1).
Besides the MAT loci, genomic sequences of the BcNEP1 gene in 16 different B. cinerea
strains are analyzed, and results demonstrate the existence of three haplotypes and
two alleles. Purifying selection is accounted for evolutionary changes within the gene. Finally, four uORF independent knockout mutants were created. This predicted gene is
located within the MAT1-1 locus, but its function is yet to be described
LINKING SACRED PLACE PREFERENCES WITH PLACE MEANING: A CONCEPTUAL MODEL OF RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SACRED PLACE MOTIVATIONS AND PLACE ATTACHMENT
Sacred places are described as places of creation, devotion and power with a deep emotional meaning that attract people for many reasons. From the literature review, it is accepted that tourism motivation is multidimensional concept. Tourists seek to satisfy not one single need but a number of distinct needs simultaneously. People are attracted and
emotional linked to sacred environments. Sacred places offer a range of psychological, spiritual and personal benefits providing potential affective link with tourists. Place-attachment influences what individuals see, think and feel about the place and therefore includes emotional and symbolic expressions. People develop a sense of belonging, identity, and dependence to certain places that visit or live and so place-attachment is a multidimensional construct that incorporates two dimensions that have recently been applied to tourism area: (1) Place-dependence that represents the functional dimension and is described as visitors’ functional attachment to a particular place and their awareness of the uniqueness of a setting; (2) Place-identity which is the symbolic dimension and refers to the connection between a place and one’s personal identity and contains both cognitive and affective elements. An extensive literature review focusing on the concept of place-attachment and motivations provide a framework which allows assess the emotional and functional bounds that tourists could have to sacred places. Insights from an empirical study of 300 tourists in Fátima (Portugal), Santiago de Compostela (Spain) and Jerusalem (Israel), indicate that the multi-dimension scale incorporates three motivations dimensions to visit sacred places as tourism destinations: Faith, Identity and Appealing. The focus of this article is to explore the relationship between these motivations with place-attachment, by summarizing, systemizing and discussing these distinct dimensions. The results could have potential practical implications for sacred destination’ planning, marketing and management, promoting their own differentiating and unique features that attract tourists and involve emotionally tourists with these settings
Voice and presence
How can voice be understood as a theme for philosophical inquiry? Using mostly phenomenological strategies
and approximations, this thesis attempts to map a transdisciplinar constellation of nexus points, where voice
emerges as na expressive manifestation of presence and living processes.
Simultaneously situated, bodily and transgressive in the contexto of the notion of acoustic territories, the ambiguity of the voice and its potential as a both phenomenon, concept and tangible resonance of subjectivity,
are explored via an inquiry informed by Ancient Philosophy, Sound Studies, Acoustics, Phenomenology and Artistic Research
Comparing CB-SEM and PLS-SEM Results: An empirical example
Many scholars view PLS-SEM as less rigorous than CB-SEM, namely due to is less
restrictive assumptions. The main objective of this research is to compare the results of both
approaches, for a given model, to examine if there are, indeed, noteworthy differences. The
study shows that the results obtained in both approaches are very similar. These findings
provide useful insights to researchers
TerrorScale: A Scale to Measure the Contact of International Tourists with Terrorism
Terrorism is unfortunately part of our lives and will not simply disappear. Accepting its presence, the management and prevention of its negative consequences is a key issue. This is imperative not only for countries where terrorist attacks occur, but also for countries that may be affected indirectly. It is necessary to
further consider this issue and create more effective instruments for crisis management, ideally based on cooperative solutions among industry, government agencies and tourism-related academic institutions. Although research on terrorism has been undertaken in the tourism domain, the specific concept of tourists’ contact with terrorism has never been operationalized. In this paper we develop a scale that measures the contact of tourists with terrorism. Insights from an empirical study of 600 international tourists indicate that
this multi-dimensional scale incorporates three types of contact: 1) Direct, 2) Indirect and 3) Attention to/ Interest in Terrorism on the Media. Discussion centers on implications of this scale for theory development and in the context of strategic destination crisis management decisions. Directions for future research are also presented
Online reviews credibility: Implications on traveller’s decision making
The social web is the ideal place to share information, experiences and preferences among consumers. Nowadays, online reviews and recommendations are becoming increasingly important and seen as a new digital form of word-of-mouth, a key topic for researchers. Despite the significant body of literature about electronic word-of-mouth (EWOM), there is a lack of research that analyzes the phenomenon in the context of the hospitality industry, its drivers, conditioning factors and impacts. This research aims to highlight the online reviews as a reliable and important source of information for travellers, with possible implications in their decision making process. It is expected to yield some relevant contributions to academia, marketing and management in the tourism and hotel businesses
