    An overview of flux braiding experiments

    Parker has hypothesised that, in a perfectly ideal environment, complex photospheric motions acting on a continuous magnetic field will result in the formation of tangential discontinuities corresponding to singular currents. We review direct numerical simulations of the problem and find the evidence points to a tendency for thin but finite thickness current layers to form, with thickness exponentially decreasing in time. Given a finite resistivity these layers will eventually become important and cause the dynamical process of energy release. Accordingly, a body of work focusses on evolution under continual boundary driving. The coronal volume evolves into a highly dynamic but statistically steady state where quantities have a temporally and spatially intermittent nature and where the Poynting flux and dissipation are decoupled on short timescales. Although magnetic braiding is found to be a promising coronal heating mechanism much work remains to determine its true viability.     Geen basis voor verlaging onderste leeftijdsgrens van bevolkingsonderzoek op baarmoederhalskanker

    Doel:\ud Nagaan of de onderste leeftijdsgrens van het bevolkingsonderzoek op baarmoederhalskanker verlaagd moet worden.\ud \ud Opzet:\ud Retrospectieve data-analyse.\ud \ud Methode:\ud Uit de Nederlandse Kankerregistratie werden alle gevallen geselecteerd van invasieve baarmoederhalskanker, gediagnosticeerd in de periode 1989-2003. Voor de leeftijdsgroep van 25-39 jaar waren ook gegevens beschikbaar over 2004 en 2005. Gegevens over sterfte werden verkregen via het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek. Trends werden beschreven met behulp van de geschatte jaarlijkse procentuele verandering en ‘joinpoint’-analyse.\ud \ud Resultaten:\ud Bij de 25-29-jarigen varieerde het aantal gevallen van baarmoederhalskanker van 0 tot 9 per jaar. De incidentie van baarmoederhalskanker daalde in de leeftijdsgroepen van 35-39 en 45-49 jaar (respectievelijk p < 0,001 en p = 0,012). Het aantal vrouwen dat stierf aan baarmoederhalskanker fluctueerde per jaar en daalde in de leeftijdsgroepen van 30-34 en 35-39 jaar (respectievelijk p = 0,01 en p = 0,03).\ud \ud Conclusie:\ud De incidentie- en sterftecijfers van baarmoederhalskanker onder vrouwen jonger dan 30 jaar zijn heel laag en stijgen niet. Met het verlagen van de onderste leeftijdsgrens van het bevolkingsonderzoek zouden veel afwijkingen worden opgespoord die normaliter in regressie zouden gaan. Omdat de voordelen van het verlagen van de leeftijdsgrens niet opwegen tegen de nadelen in termen van overbehandeling en angst heeft deze verlaging volgens ons op dit moment geen zin

    Writhe in the Stretch-Twist-Fold Dynamo

We consider a thin flux tube distorted by simple stretch, twist, and fold motions and calculate the helicity and energy spectra. The writhe number assists in the calculations, as it tells us how much the internal twist changes as the tube is distorted. In addition it provides a valuable diagnostic for the degree of distortion. Non mirror-symmetric dynamos typically generate magnetic helicity of one sign on large-scales and the opposite sign on small scales. The calculations presented here confirm the hypothesis that the large-scale helicity corresponds to writhe and the small scale corresponds to twist. In addition, the writhe helicity spectrum exhibits an interesting oscillatory behavior. The technique of calculating Fourier spectra for the writhe helicity may be useful in other areas of research, for example, the study of highly coiled molecules

    Spatial Pattern Switching Enables Cyclic Evolution in Spatial Epidemics

    Infectious diseases often spread as spatial epidemic outbreak waves. A number of model studies have shown that such spatial pattern formation can have important consequences for the evolution of pathogens. Here, we show that such spatial patterns can cause cyclic evolutionary dynamics in selection for the length of the infectious period. The necessary reversal in the direction of selection is enabled by a qualitative change in the spatial pattern from epidemic waves to irregular local outbreaks. The spatial patterns are an emergent property of the epidemic system, and they are robust against changes in specific model assumptions. Our results indicate that emergent spatial patterns can act as a rich source for complexity in pathogen evolution

    A second generation cervico-vaginal lavage device shows similar performance as its preceding version with respect to DNA yield and HPV DNA results

    Contains fulltext : 118480.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)BACKGROUND: Attendance rates of cervical screening programs can be increased by offering HPV self-sampling to non-attendees. Acceptability, DNA yield, lavage volumes and choice of hrHPV test can influence effectiveness of the self-sampling procedures and could therefore play a role in recruiting non-attendees. To increase user-friendliness, a frequently used lavage sampler was modified. In this study, we compared this second generation lavage device with the first generation device within similar birth cohorts. METHODS: Within a large self-sampling cohort-study among non-responders of the Dutch cervical screening program, a subset of 2,644 women received a second generation self-sampling lavage device, while 11,977 women, matched for age and ZIP-code, received the first generation model. The second generation device was different in shape, color, lavage volume, and packaging, in comparison to its first generation model. The Cochran's test was used to compare both devices for hrHPV positivity rate and response rate. To correct for possible heterogeneity between age and ZIP codes in both groups the Breslow-Day test of homogeneity was used. A T-test was utilized to compare DNA yields of the obtained material in both groups. RESULTS: Median DNA yields were 90.4 mug/ml (95% CI 83.2-97.5) and 91.1 mug/ml (95% CI 77.8-104.4, p= 0.726) and hrHPV positivity rates were 8.2% and 6.9% (p= 0.419) per sample self-collected by the second - and the first generation of the device (p= 0.726), respectively. In addition, response rates were comparable for the two models (35.4% versus 34.4%, p= 0.654). CONCLUSIONS: Replacing the first generation self-sampling device by an ergonomically improved, second generation device resulted in equal DNA yields, comparable hrHPV positivity rates and similar response rates. Therefore, it can be concluded that the clinical performance of the first and second generation models are similar. Moreover, participation of non-attendees in cervical cancer screening is probably not predominantly determined by the type of self-collection device

    LEMUR: Large European Module for solar Ultraviolet Research. European contribution to JAXA's Solar-C mission

    Understanding the solar outer atmosphere requires concerted, simultaneous solar observations from the visible to the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) and soft X-rays, at high spatial resolution (between 0.1" and 0.3"), at high temporal resolution (on the order of 10 s, i.e., the time scale of chromospheric dynamics), with a wide temperature coverage (0.01 MK to 20 MK, from the chromosphere to the flaring corona), and the capability of measuring magnetic fields through spectropolarimetry at visible and near-infrared wavelengths. Simultaneous spectroscopic measurements sampling the entire temperature range are particularly important. These requirements are fulfilled by the Japanese Solar-C mission (Plan B), composed of a spacecraft in a geosynchronous orbit with a payload providing a significant improvement of imaging and spectropolarimetric capabilities in the UV, visible, and near-infrared with respect to what is available today and foreseen in the near future. The Large European Module for solar Ultraviolet Research (LEMUR), described in this paper, is a large VUV telescope feeding a scientific payload of high-resolution imaging spectrographs and cameras. LEMUR consists of two major components: a VUV solar telescope with a 30 cm diameter mirror and a focal length of 3.6 m, and a focal-plane package composed of VUV spectrometers covering six carefully chosen wavelength ranges between 17 and 127 nm. The LEMUR slit covers 280" on the Sun with 0.14" per pixel sampling. In addition, LEMUR is capable of measuring mass flows velocities (line shifts) down to 2 km/s or better.     Solar Spectroscopy and (Pseudo-)Diagnostics of the Solar Chromosphere

    I first review trends in current solar spectrometry and then concentrate on comparing various spectroscopic diagnostics of the solar chromosphere. Some are actually not at all chromospheric but just photospheric or clapotispheric and do not convey information on chromospheric heating, even though this is often assumed. Balmer Halpha is the principal displayer of the closed-field chromosphere, but it is unclear how chromospheric fibrils gain their large Halpha opacity. The open-field chromosphere seems to harbor most if not all coronal heating and solar wind driving, but is hardly seen in optical diagnostics.Comment: To appear in "Recent Advances in Spectroscopy: Astrophysical, Theoretical and Experimental Perspectives", eds.
